5 out of 5 eggsEasy set up, excellent range

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500-100PAS N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: The software (both in the firmware and available for download from Netgear) is very good and organized. Setting up the router was quite simple as was adjusting various parameters for the home network. The two radios (2.4 and 5 GHz) are excellent. The unit is in my garage wiring cabinet and the signal transmits across all four floors. HD video streaming via wired and wireless is smooth.

Cons: The clear plastic stand is nice but if I had the option to remove it I would have done so.

Other Thoughts: I paired this Netgear router/switch with a separate Netgear gigabit switch to enable my entire wired/wireless network.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's good

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500-100PAS N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: This router "works"... which unfortunately is a remarkable feature for routers, particularly wireless ones.

I will grant that I do not use every feature on this router. It's a very feature packed router with a lot of options which I can't really review because I mainly just use to 'route' my internet wirelessly around the house. But it does a fantastic job at what I do use if for.

It doesn't:
It does not have any problem whatsoever with power outages and internet outages. It has never, ever, needed to be "reset", no matter how the cable company screws the line up. It has never needed any port configuration (my last router involved constant port configuring to get all my software to work properly online). It doesn't overheat.

It does:
It is fast, really quite stunningly fast. It has excellent range, allowing me to use my wifi on my smartphone from as far away as inside my car in the parking lot. It's security seems to be very robust. It has a very easy to use graphical interface which is at the very least "nice" even if you're a techie who's perfectly comfortable with something more spartan. You can control it from a smartphone app as well as desktop software. It is blatantly easy to set up with new devices. It is handy to in that it actually gives you two wireless networks, which allows you to micromanage things, or combine both for crazy fast data transfer. It is very feature packed, although I have only scratched the surface of it's more elaborate features.

Internally it's technically a more powerful computer than my first home pc build from 1996. Which gives it about ten times more hardware muscle than all the previous routers I've had in the sub-$100 range.

Not at all important, but it actually looks nice, especially standing next to a very similarly styled new high-end motorola modem. And they both take up very minimal desk space.

Cons: It doesn't bring me breakfast in bed, nor does it give foot massages. Also, it is not made of dark chocolate, although that may be a pro in the larger picture.

Other Thoughts: I may be biased because pretty much every router I touched during the 2000's was a poorly made piece of trash which caused nothing but headaches. This router is so unlike those that I almost want to call it something like "friendly networking buddy", instead of the R-word. Compared to previous devices I've used, it feels like I upgraded from wood stoves to having a microwave oven.

This friendly networking buddy, and a similarly priced high end Uninterrupted Power Supply from APC were both items I've gotten in recent years which aren't really "center stage" hardware items for a home pc. But both have proven to be excellent investments in the long run.

Would recommend to a friend, and would buy again.

4 out of 5 eggsWNDR4500-100PAS

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500-100PAS N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: Purchased this unit to use it as a A.P. since my primary router is in the basement (Actiontec). The WNDR4500 was recommend by 5 co-worker who have this unit and they are where very satisfied with it and I was very impress once set-up with the performance for streaming video on the 5GHz band to my LED TV which as a built in Wi-Fi and keeping all others on the 2.4GHz. Another note I was a bit reluctant on upgrading the firmware after a lot of comments but I did try it and it went well.

Cons: the finish looks slick but terrible with finger print

1 out of 5 eggsNot so good

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500-100PAS N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: Nice looking, easy install for basic stuff. In fact super simple.

Cons: After an hour with tech support could not get WIFI speed up to cable ethernet speed or close. Told to take back. Didn't try again bought better one from Newegg.

4 out of 5 eggsNETGEAR WNDR4500

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500-100PAS N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: I have had this router for over a year. It has worked well.

Cons: Not intuitive on how to rest the router and reconnect to the internet when using a cable modem. I knocked off 1 egg since it was not clear how to do this

Other Thoughts: But the one problem I was having was not being able to restart the router and reconnect to the network. The router would come back up and I could communicate with it but not the internet. In the past I would reload the firmware and then the router would connect to the internet. I discovered that if you turn off the cable modem (assuming that is how you connect to the internet) during router initialization then the router will initialize and connect to the internet. This saves me from reloading the firmware each time. I did upgrade to the latest firmware level 1.0.1.38. This approach can be found in the NETGEAR Genie application.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat when it works

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500-100PAS N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: Fast and simultaneous dual band. A lot of bells and whistles. Netgenie is fairly helpful for novice people and for pros.

Cons: This router drops signal quite often. Then the minute you lose power or have to reset the router, the firmware becomes corrupted and you have to go through this whole reinstallation of the firmware. I'm getting so used to it that it is becoming second nature now. Netgear support is horrible and want to sell you an extended warranty for a problem they know exists on this product. And the price of that extended warranty is almost as much as a new router (now why would I do that?) Very disappointed in this router for I bought this because of the pros mentioned above and paid good money for this when it was top of the line approx 1 year ago but it is not worth the hassle because of these firmware problems that they know exists with this model. I will probably go back to Linksey or Cisco for I have had no problems with those brands, maybe even try Motorola out for I see some of their models get good reviews. Never again with Netgear unless their customer service improves, not so much the attitudes for I had no problem with the person I talked to just the issues with the company not backing their product without charging me (because it is a known recurring problem).
