5 out of 5 eggsDecent 5-port managed gigabit switch

Pros: Metal enclosure (not plastic), small footprint, can enable/disable power saving mode, loop detection, port mirroring, IGMP Snooping, VLAN config, web GUI interface, lifetime warranty, sale price.

Cons: Price dropped ten bucks after I bought it. Rebate hassles. Not for network newbies! 5 ports might fill up fast. 8 port version was nearly double the price of this 5 port at the time of purchase. Out of the box it defaults on If you're wireless router is set at like mine then it could throw off a lot of newbies. I had to install the ProSafe Plus Utility software so I could change it to a in order to use the web GUI. Just an FYI, no IEEE802.3ad LACP support (no eggs taken off for this).

Other Thoughts: I initially bought this because my Netgear ReadyNAS 204 has two gigabit NIC's for link aggregation. I thought this switch supported hardware IEEE802.3ad LACP, but it does not. My mistake for not looking more carefully into the specs of this switch. I was still able to bond them for adaptive load balancing on this switch. If the terms VLAN, port mirroring, & IGMP snooping are foreign to you, then I'd advise purchasing a less expensive "unmanaged" switch and not this. But if you need to setup VLAN's and the like, or just want to learn what more advanced network switches can do then go ahead and get this switch (when it's on sale)!

1 out of 5 eggsCovert Warranty

Pros: Lasted 5 years of a lifetime

Cons: NETGEAR GS105v2
Serial Number: 1FD17A5E03A0C
NetGear buyers beware. NetGear warranty has covert terms and conditions. The lifetime warranty is not worth anything unless you keep your receipt. The likelihood that you and I keep our receipts for a lifetime is zero. Please do not spend extra money as I did to secure the lifetime warrantee. At the time, I purchase the subject NetGear product at a 25% premium over competitive equivalent products. Shame on me. Do not make my mistake.
I spent almost 20 minutes on the phone with first line support and a manager, Vincent No last name,
NETGEAR, Inc. The outcome is that I will never buy a NetGear product unless it is competitively priced again.

1 out of 5 eggsWatch out!!

Pros: Nothing unless you place them in a fireproof enclosure away from your other equipment.

Cons: Netgear does not stand behind their products. I purchased two of their switches and both self destructed after several months of use for no explainable reason. One produced black smoke, both exuded a clear liquid, and black glue like substance. The manufacturer refused to tell me what chemicals the products failure exposed me to. Their excuse for not telling me was that nobody had reported their product failing. Luckily I had these switches where I could see them and was able to avoid a fire.

Other Thoughts: Linksys has better support

5 out of 5 eggsCute little switch with VLAN

Pros: Inexpensive on sale; really inexpensive if rebate comes through. Low power gigabit switch. And VLAN support, which was a trigger.

Only 5 ports, but that was sufficient, just, for what I needed.

Cons: Docs don't admit that you don't have to use the setup/management program that only runs on some half-baked OS that I don't use here. I'd call this -½ egg for annoyance and having to troll through the docs to find the 192.168.* address it sets itself up on. Came across it in one of the pictures from the management program's docs. :-( Stupid Netgear doc writers, no biscuit for you.

Only has 5 ports. One can never have enough ports. :-)

Other Thoughts: Has perfectly usable web-based interface on by default. The internal web server seems to be hardwired to VLAN 1, but that's okay, you can use other VLANs for your actual work and remove 1 from all but one port that's used to access the management server. The descriptions of the config options in the software's docs are actually pretty good, and map directly onto the interface available in the browser.

4 out of 5 eggsMake sure to use a good condition CAT 5+ RJ45 Cables as stated in the system requirements

Pros: 1. It works perfect if you have the CAT 5 or better cables in good condition.
2. It has a web interface for Mac and Linux users that can't use the CD.
3. Cable testing
4. The metal construction feels premium
5. Lifetime warranty

Cons: 1. Upgrading the bios in Web Interface should be simpler by having a button that opens up explorer to select the file.
2. The latest bios (V1.4.0.2) does not support the gigabit connection on port 1 which will be fixed in a future update.

Other Thoughts: I initially had freezing and packet drop issues, but changing the cables to fresh CAT 6s resolved everything.

I'm using the GS105Ev2 switch along with a Netgear C3700 Cable Modem+Router and Netgear Powerline 1200 on my PS4 and a couple of other devices. The switch did not lower the speed of the powerline adapter in any of the speed tests. This combination is a really convenient alternative to passing RJ45 wires around your house.

Just remember to use CAT 5 cables that are in good conditions or you're going to run into issues like I did at fist.

All in all, great experience.

5 out of 5 eggsSupports Web GUI for Management

Pros: new Web GUI and great features for the price. This is a sturdy Gbit Ethernet switch that includes basic managed switch features such as VLAN tagging, rate limiting, and port mirroring. Netgear has not update their datasheet for GS105Ev2, but the recent Firmware (1.3.x) now includes a web GUI and thus no longer requires using a Windows program (ProSafe Plus Utility) to setup and manage, see release notes for confirmation. Unit shipped with this latest firmware, DHCP client mode on, and with the Web GUI feature enabled. You can use a LAN scanner or your router's DHCP client list to find the assigned IP address and manage instantly from any browser without installing any software. Great little switch to add to your home/office LAN toolkit.

Cons: The ProSafe Plus Utility is the legacy method to find this device on your network and setup, but is only for Windows and is only available as unsigned .exe requiring admin rights to install (Windows will report publisher "Unknown"). By now, any software requiring admin rights should always be signed. This is actually a third-party utility from Flexera Software, which is reputable company and supplies such ID and Config utilities for several vendors.

Other Thoughts: This unit has amazing feature set for the price. I successfully used the port mirroring feature to monitor traffic between a device/computer and the rest of the network by mirroring the traffic from ports 1-4 to port 5 and attaching a Linux box running WireShark to port 5. Mirroring with a 1 Gigabit switch doesn't slow down network performance like my now ancient 10Mbit Ethernet hub (was not a switch, so always sends traffic to all ports).
