5 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for

Pros: My requirements were fulfilled:
- LACP/802.3ad
- VLAN/802.1Q
- SNMP/RFC2863 with High Capacity Counter / Counter64 / 64-bit support
- 16 or more ports
- Java applet in web UI is optional, not required

Cons: - Had to resort to a > $150, 24-port, nearly pizza-box size switch to get the desired features

Other Thoughts: So after nearly a decade I've out-grown my Netgear GS108T-100NAS, needing more ports (ie 16 would suffice), but with the same functionality... well, with the addition of 64-bit SNMP counters (the original GS108T can be forgiven as it was an early prosumer-grade GbE switch), but finding an upgrade wasn't easy.

All the current Netgear prosumer-grade (ie GS1XX) "smart"/"managed" switches either:
- have less than 16 ports
- require Windows application to manage
- don't support LACP
- don't support SNMP

Other brands prosumer-grade models don't fare much better and even the cheaper brands' professional models fall short. I tested a ZyXEL GS1900-24 because it was on sale < $100, but its SNMP engine had the bug of limiting 64-bit counters to 32-bits. You get what you pay for?

I considered Netgear's 16-port equivalent of this switch, but for only $10 or so more I got this switch on sale.

The web UI is advertised as using Java, which concerned me as Java applet support (ie NPAPI) is being retired from web browsers, but thankfully it's optional. The standard Netgear menuing system of dividing things up by feature is present and sufficient to do everything, but the Java applet allows you to navigate the web UI by Ethernet port. The applet displays a visual representation of the front of the switch and when the user places the mouse cursor on an Ethernet port a menu is displayed with links to configure features relevant to that port. The port-specific menu just takes you to the same web pages you can get to using the old Netgear menuing-by-features system; a different path to the same destination.

2 out of 5 eggsFunctional switch, firmware 10 years out of date

Pros: Switches packets

Cons: Can't disable HTTP interface
Undocumented telnet interface (port 60,000)
Firmware straight out of 1990s

Other Thoughts: This switch seems fine hardware wise, but the firmware needs to be rewritten from the ground up.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat switch for the cost

Pros: Has L2 and L3 features. SFP ports are dedicated and not shared with 2 of the copper ports. Fanless so runs silent, especially nice in a home deployment.

Cons: Web interface is a little clunky and has a bit of a learning curve. No CLI interface for management. Parts of web interface require Java Plugin.

Other Thoughts: Be sure to upgrade to latest firmware as the firmware that ships on it has issues with newer version of Java which is required for parts of the web interface.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Switch for Home/Small Business

Pros: I bought this switch for my house which I have wired up myself. This switch provides more features than any typical home user would need, but offers room for the future as well as an easy to use web interface. It is also comes with ears to mount it into a rack or cabinet. It's power supply built in and uses a the standard C13 power cable which is a huge plus. There is an internal fan, but is basically silent and the switch does not get hot by any means. The two SFP ports are nice if you wanted to connect it up via fiber.

Cons: None
