5 out of 5 eggsCheap and Effective

Pros: Literally plug and play. As simple as that. The device worked right out of the box.

No speed difference between plugged right into the router and behind the switch.

Inside the home network transfer speeds were able to fully saturate the gigabit ports.

It's small. That is always a good bonus for things like this.

Power brick is manageably small.

LED's are not that bright which is a necessity with devices like this. A bright LED makes them unusable.

Stays cool. Do not notice it getting warm to the touch even after nearly a month of 24/7 operation.

Cons: It's a con for all switches I've owned and reviewed. Why not make the brick portion of the power brick be separated from the plug. It almost always takes up at least 2 power spots if not three. They're trying to fix this by rotating it but if the power brick is wedged between the desk and the wall then all that does is push the desk away from the wall. It's a bit annoying. I'm not taking off one egg for that because everyone does it. It would be nice to see it change at some point but I don't really see that happening.

Other Thoughts: The price is right, it works right out of the box no problem at all, the two main things you want out of a switch. It provides 4 more networked ports. If that's what you're looking for then this is the switch for you. Those along with the other pros as listed above makes this switch a great value.

5 out of 5 eggsFast switching!

Pros: This is an extremely compact size and way to add additional connectivity in the simplest way.

It's as easy as plugging it in and you have additional gigabit connectivity ports ready to use.

It's very small, which is nice since we have a lot of things plugged in these days. Connect to either modem or router and this will automatically switch based on demand, and leave nobody without a connection.

Netgear is a leader in connectivity products. Two-year warranty is very nice.

Cons: None... zero zip..

Other Thoughts: This is a very inexpensive way to add additional wired internet connections. Switching can tend to make me think one of the connections gets the bulk of connectivity, while the others wait their turn and real slow connections. In testing this I found this to be totally untrue.

For just about two weeks I have had 2 daily PC’s, an HTPC and a laptop connected. Two of the computers are used often at the same time and the HTPC is almost always on and running HDTV. I found it impressive that this unit never left any of them with a poor connection, at any time! This includes online gaming, HDTV running continuous, and a laptop just to be another user so that I could see how good this works. With two computers doing online gaming, I occasionally saw a slight reduction in FPS, but it was a fast recovery. That showed me that this not only switches on demand, it does it really quick.

It's has been like I didn't even connect this for the most part (compared to straight out of my router). With today's high speeds in our homes and businesses, for the multi-tasking and multi-users, this proved out to be a very good product. There is enough bandwidth to go around. I have a hi-speed package from my supplier. With a slow basic bandwidth package this might not give as good results, this is ‘Sharing’ a single connection.

How can you go wrong to even have this as a tool in the tool box of ifs? Additional connections or want to be ready in case, Would I recommend this to family or friend, yes!

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Affordable!

Pros: Small footprint, built well, very fast, and affordable! Super simple to set up! No configuring, no drivers, and no software needed, rock solid stable, truly plug and play!

No skills needed to set it up, just add one network wire from your existing router or modem, and you will have four more available connections for wired devices to connect on your home network. It’s that easy!

I connected multiple devices for testing, a couple of internet capable televisions, a NAS media server, and a Wii. I tested the unit by streaming between my two DNLA televisions while transferring files from my media server at the same time on another computer within my network, it worked flawlessly. This switch performed great and was able to handle the demands of the devices connected on my network with no stuttering or disconnects!

Connections are made on the back of the unit; lights in front will allow viewing of activity on your network when transferring data with various devices. Unit stays cool to the touch. Designed to sit on your desktop, and it is not wall mountable.

While streaming to my televisions from my media server, download speeds for me were within 600mps to 650mps. As always, network speeds will vary for everyone as no two networks are built alike!

Cons: None at all!

Other Thoughts: Anyone who finds the need to add a few extra ports to their network, this unit does the job well. Supports 10/100/1000 mbps connections.

If you need to expand your network with a few more hard wire connections, this switch is the way to go

4 out of 5 eggsWorks very well!

Pros: This switch works very well. It's maintains standard gigabit speeds. It's small so it's easy to tuck away if needed for splitting an office connection. No heat issues either.

Cons: No mounting points on the back. No link lights to indicate speeds.

Other Thoughts: This switch works wonderfully. I recommend it for anyone that needs a small switch.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked Great

Pros: - Pleasing aesthetics
- Works as advertised
- Fairly solid construction
- Advertised as intelligence power consumption, seems to use a bit less than my previous switch.

Cons: - It's white... I'm not a fan of white components
- LEDs do not specify connection speed.

Other Thoughts: The switch its self worked fine. It's a switch so the installation is fairly simple, you plug one Ethernet cable into your router (or another switch) and then run cables to your devices.

In my particular setup I have several devices in another room and the main router in a different room so I have a long cable run to a switch next to the devices. This replaced an older dlink switch, and the difference is definitely noticeable. I squeeze a bit more speed out of the existing wiring and gigabit switch.

In a few brief tests I copied several files averaging around 500 MB in size. Typically before I would get about 80mb/s, now I'm noticing around 90mb/s.

I would have liked if the leds specified the connection speed, but it's not a deal breaker in recommending the device.

I'm sure this switch would work fine for a small office, but keep in mind that the body is plastic and so it would probably break if it were to be dropped on a hard surface.

The switch functions well as a switch, and if you need a switch then it's a good choice.

If you happen to have a white gadget setup then it should look great, as for me I hate white components and I buried it behind a table.

5 out of 5 eggsGood home use switch

Pros: The NETGEAR 5 Port Gigabit switch (Model GS205) is a great home use switch. The package includes the switch, A quick install guide, and a power adaptor. The switch measures 4.5"x3 3/8"x1". Connectivity is very simple. Just plug in your Ethernet cables and power the device on. All ports are auto sensing and will run at whatever speed your equipment is capable of up to 1 Gigabit. The lights will tell you if the device is on or off, and if a connected device is on/off/or has activity. My throughput speeds were comparable to other small workgroup switches and ran flawlessly for the few days I had the switch up for testing.

Cons: This is more of a wish list item than anything. The status lights should show what speed the device is connected at. This really isn't a big deal for the typical user.

Other Thoughts: At the time of this review the price of this unit ($21.99) is a very reasonable price for a reliable home use switch. I would recommend.

I will follow up my comments in the future if I have anything more to add or run into issues with this unit.

5 out of 5 eggsLightweight device that is no lightweight, performance-wise

Pros: Size/heft, reasonable build quality, sleek looking, subdued LEDs

Cons: Minor Cons: I’m not a huge fan of white components, but switches are not typically in the public view so it is not such a big deal. Other items to mention are that the LEDs do not indicate link speed and that there no mounting holes on the back.

Other Thoughts: I have been using Netgear switches & routers for the better part of 10 years and this one has easily met my expectations! It is the smallest Gigabit switch I have ever owned and, although it is lightweight, it has a quality feel about it. To test it, I redirected 4 of my busiest devices through it (including my web server) and could not be more pleased, several weeks later, without any issue. I ran Speed Test (My favorite speed utility) from most of the PCs that are directed through this switch and there seemed to be no diminished speeds. As mentioned in the pros, the build quality is there with a sturdy plastic housing. It is lightweight enough that some decent double-stick tape could replace the need for mounting holes. The LEDs are subdued, which is big for me, mainly because I get really annoyed with overly-bright LEDs. 5 eggs for an all-around value device that my history with Netgear indicates it will last for years to come.

5 out of 5 eggsCompact set-and-forget switch

Pros: - Small, compact footprint
- Economical value with energy saving ethernet protocol
- Un-managed easy configuration and plug-and-play setup

Cons: - No mounting holes for vertical wall mount
- Status LED's do not indicate link speed

Other Thoughts: I had to really nit-pick this product to find any fault with it, I experienced no heat issues while using in an entertainment center or any other problems while using it on my home network (8 total wired devices)
The unit is easily set up with plug and play and no configuration required by the user other than ensuring all cables used are gigabit capable for the fastest possible speeds (or use whatever you have if speed isn't a concern)
If you are looking for a small switch to expand your small home or small office network this product delivers consistent performance at a great value to the user.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Switch!

Pros: Nice looking, small form factor with power saving technology as well as fast connectivity speed. How much more can you ask for?? (maybe more ports with a bigger model ;) The lights are not annoying, and you can really just plug this all in and put it in a place to forget it.. never have to reboot it.

This model is white, compact. It is 5 ports, one of which will be used as an uplink from your router or other switch, so keep in mind you will only get 4 additional ports with a 5 port switch.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I was using an older router as a switch in an area where I had a few devices, however this switch performs much better and is great that it's power efficient. I would purchase another in a heartbeat if I find the need for another one.
