3 out of 5 eggsGood for Home not for Small Office

Pros: The NETGEAR 200 series of Unmanaged Switches can provide easy and affordable networking to any home and or small office. Everything about this switch is plug-and-play, so if you need to expand your network to multiple devices fast, you can just plug them directly into this switch and away you go. Its as simple as that.
This is a very basic home switch so don't expect anything amazing to come out of it. As for the features for this switch, this NETGEAR switch wont set itself apart from most home switches for both the appearance and speed categories.

The GS208 is powered by a single external 12V 1amp power supply located at the back near to the right of the Ethernet ports. The GS208 has 8 10/100/1000 Base-T ports that allow for a maximum throughput of 8Gbps according to there site. Power consumption was low to be expected around the 2.0-2.5W range with 4-ports being used and 0W when nothing was plugged in. Which means you could leave this switch on all the time without raising your power bill through the roof. Actually this would raise your bill around $1.50-$3.00 a year depending on what your power company changes for power so that's a plus. For those that like details it complies with the IEEE 802.3az standard which is based around technology being energy efficient.

Just like most switches produced today the GS208 comes with auto-MDI/MDIX capabilities which allow for the switch to be able to handle a cross-over cable just like it would a straight-through cable. The NETGEAR GS208 again just like other switches has the ability to auto-negotiate cable speeds to optimize speed/throughput to an end-device.

Fan less design makes the devices impossible to hear when it is running and the internal temperatures are easily around a steady 20C with half the ports populated. Though I wouldn't really worry about this device over heating ever.

Cons: I do have some complaints about this switch. The first being, it has a very cheap feeling. I can flex the entire switch with ease. I know its case is all plastic but that should not be an excuse when I can easily bend the plastic in areas. The case is held together with tabs which is very common in today's world. This reduced cost of the device when you are producing in mass and is probably is the reason the switch can be flexed so much.

Another issue I have with this switch is the underside of the case. It is very smooth casing it to move around very easily. It would have been very nice to add in some small rubber nubs which would give it some grip on smooth surfaces. This may seem like nit picking but when you like things to be organized you have to. Rubber nubs are not much of a cost increase so they really should not have been a missing feature.

Other Thoughts: Over all the NETGEAR GS208 is a decent home switch that will function perfectly for end-users. When you just need a dumb-switch to spread internet to other devices at your home this will be the switch for you. Though if you are a small-business I would not advise this switch though I would advise NETGEARS GS308 switch which is very similar to this switch except that its is a metal housing and has grips on the bottom and supports large frame support for transferring large amounts of data across a network.

All in all NETGEAR I think this is a good switch but defiantly has room for improvement. And just like other reviewers . I to feel like I really CANNOT give this product 5 Eggs. Like I've said above, NOTHING STANDS OUT about this product and it does have it's shortcomings. Therefore, I feel that a 3 Egg Rating is fair.

4 out of 5 eggsNot a bad consumer unmanaged switch

Pros: - Unmanaged, Simple Plug and Play

- Auto Cable Detection (No crossover cables)

- Super Green (My Kill-A-Watt showed this device was right on par with saving energy and only supplying power to the connected ports)

- Sturdy Build (for a plastic switch)

- 2 Year Warranty

- Price is Spot On

Cons: - An included Cat6 Cable would have been nice. Granted I swapped this unit out with another unmanaged Netgear switch and needed no other cables.

- The power cable is big as usual for these types of devices. I would rather see a power supply inside the unit or outside (like a laptop charger) rather than on the actual plug, as it takes up a lot of space on the surge protector or outlet.

- I'm not big on the white plastic, although it isn't horrible. This would look great with a bunch of plastic Mac's (Not a Mac guy...)

Other Thoughts: Overall I feel this switch performs as it should.

Be careful. I noticed the information on Newegg is listed incorrectly and shows this switch supports only 10/100 Mbps speeds on all 8 ports. However, this is in fact a full Gigabit switch and supports 10/100/1000 Mbps. Newegg, you need to correct this.

I swapped this switch out for another Netgear Gigabit switch I had been using. It was only a 5 port and was full so the possible expansion options are nice.

There is not a whole lot that stands out about this switch. With that being said, I get exactly what I would expect out of an unmanaged Gigabit switch. Instant connectivity and instant expansion off of my router.

This switch is great for any home user wanting to expand their Gigabit network from the typical 4-5 ports on their router to something bigger. I use this to run a file server as well as 4 other wired machines. I also now have the ability to expand.

This switch isn't perfect but I do think it is a great switch for the typical novice tech that wants to get into home networking. If you need something that is simple and allows you to expand your home or small business wired connectivity, then this is for you.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to setup

Pros: Even if I am technical, I took my tech hat off, and it was even simpler than setting up a clock. Just plug it in and plug network connections and you are done

Cons: None that I can see

Other Thoughts: Very, very simple - no need to be technical to get it working

3 out of 5 eggsNetgear 8-Port Gigabit Switch (GS208), 2-year Warranty, Plastic Case

Pros: Before I begin my review on this product, let me set the record straight on something. NewEgg DOES NOT PAY their Eggxpert Reviewers ANY MONEY for a review (GOOD OR BAD - ON ANY PRODUCT)!!! When they 1st asked me to become a reviewer, they told me that I could post ANY TYPE of review that I wanted to, either GOOD OR BAD! The only thing that they asked me to do was to be honest in my review, which I try to be. Now that this is finished, let's start...

+ 1. Supports GigaByte Connections.
+ 2. Auto Cable Detection. NO Crossover Cables needed!
+ 3. Supports "GREEN" Ethernet!

Other than the above items, that's pretty much it!

I plugged this puppy in AND it worked as it's supposed to. What more can I say...

When you get right down to it, this is just another TYPICAL Switch. Nowadays, they are all pretty much the same. One Brand or Model might have 1 or 2 items that might be different, but when you come right down to BRASS TACKS, they are pretty much the same. The same is true here as well...

Cons: My CONS that I've listed are pretty much MY OWN PERSONAL PREFERENCES other than ACTUAL CONS against this product. Then again when you have been doing this as long as I have, you'll develop your OWN Personal Cons as well...
Things I dislike about this Switch:

- 1. A Plastic Case??? I prefer Metal Cases.
- 2. A WHITE Plastic Case??? Come on already, THESE SHOW DIRT!!!
- 3. A Wall Wart Power Supply??? I HATE these with a passion!!!
- 4. ONLY a 2 Year Warranty??? REALLY??? Are you serious???

Other Thoughts: If you read the "OVERVIEW" Section and look up the "SPECS" on this switch there is some confusion under the NewEgg Specs. In "OVERVIEW" it says that this switch (the GS208) DOES NOT have ANY GigaByte Ports at all, just 8 10/100 Ports, and yet on the box AND under the "SPECIFICATIONS" Section on the NewEgg Site for this product it states that this IS a 10/100/1000Mbps Switch. I am sure that this is likely to cause SOME confusion among customers.

I can assure you that this IS a GigaByte Switch despite what it says.

It also states in the "OVERVIEW" Section that this Switch has a "MTBF" of roughly 533,000 hours or about 60 years, and yet on the box itself it says that the "MTBF" is roughly 332,000 hours or about 37 years. Looks like SOMEONE NEEDS to get their facts straight. In case you are wondering WHAT "MTBF" stands for, it stands for "MEAN TIME BETWEEN FAILURE" and is an estimate on HOW LONG any product SHOULD last for. Usually (BUT NOT ALWAYS) the BETTER a product is made, the LONGER the "MTBF" time is. Now you know. See, you DO learn something NEW every day!

ONE FINAL NOTE: There are going to be those "CERTAIN PEOPLE" out there who will have NO IDEA how to check (OR EVEN ACTIVATE) the Jumbo Frames Feature for this switch so I will TRY and explain it to you all... And NO it is NOT ACTIVATED AUTOMATICALLY, you MUST TURN IT ON YOURSELF in order for it to work! Now, back to my instructions...

1. Go to START.
3. Go to SYSTEM.
6. Pick your NETWORK ADAPTER and RIGHT-CLICK on it and choose PROPERTIES.
7. Choose the ADVANCED TAB and Scroll Down until you see JUMBO FRAMES on the left.
8. Once you've found it, CLICK on JUMBO FRAMES and set the VALUE to 9KB MTU.
9. Click on OK then close everything and you're done...

That's ALL there is to it. Hope this helps...

Now on to my Final Thoughts and Recommendation and/or Opinions on this product.

After thinking it through, I really CANNOT give this product 5 Eggs. Like I've said above, NOTHING STANDS OUT about this product AND it does have it's shortcomings to boot. Therefore, I feel that a 3 Egg Rating is fair.

Would I recommend this product for others to buy??? Yes I would IF it was a SMALL OFFICE or for use in a home.

Would I buy this product for myself??? NO! Only because I need MORE than the 8 Ports that this product has. No other reason!
