5 out of 5 eggsStupid FAST!!

Pros: Super easy to setup. It took more time to open the box and connect all the CAT cables than it did to set it up. Super easy.

I love that it come with a pre programmed SSID and password. Makes it even faster to get it going.

FAST! I have 50 megabit service from Suddenlink and I get the full 6 MB/s down at my PC.

Love that there 2 separate 5 GHz channels.

Lots of features and probably more to come.

Cons: Price. It is a little pricey but not so much that it is a deal breaker.

I honestly cant think of any aside from that. Everything just worked! I cant ask for more than that.

Other Thoughts: I had a R7000 Nighthawk 1900 which was working perfectly fine. I wanted a AC media bridge for my Xbox 360, TV, DirectV, and Blu ray player so I upgraded my main router and moved the 1900 to the living room. Man...what massive difference in speed. Before I would get about 1.6 M Bits to the Blu ray player since it has a bandwidth test. After the upgrade it measured 27 M bits. I dont know how accurate the test is but it is the only one I had to measure the improvement if any. Love it love it!! Now when I watch movies through the Xbox or Youtube videos there is no buffering. It is the same as watching on my PC.

I would definitely recommend this router to anyone wanting top of line speed and super fast setup.

5 out of 5 eggsWow!

Pros: Speed, Range, Setup, honestly everything I've seen/experienced about this router is a Pro.

Cons: The only 2 Cons I could think of was 1: Price is a little high. 2: No link aggregation, but that's not a big deal considering this isn't a managed switch.

Other Thoughts: I got this on a "get a free cable modem with purchase" deal. I didn't need the modem, but my uncle did. So I sold him the modem for retail price, and sold him my old router making this router half-price to me.

The range is very impressive. I was able to stream (via wireless LAN) a movie on my phone and another movie on my tablet from the middle of the road on the other side of my neighbor's house. No lag, no skips. The birds-eye distance would be a good 100-130 feet. The blinds were all closed, and the signal went through several walls. Previously the range, on my old wireless N, barely made it upstairs with any doors closed.

From un-boxing to "fully setup" with all the security settings set I spent a total of 30-45 minutes. Considering I've never setup a Netgear device before, thus not familiar with their GUI/interface, that's pretty impressive to me. After changing settings the apply/reboot time on this router was very fast compared to any linksys or dlink router I've setup.

5 out of 5 eggsBig difference from my Netgear Nighhawk!

Pros: I bought this to replace my Netgear Nighthawk which has worked just ok since I bought it last year....main reason for replacing is the wireless performance of my two Tivo wireless adaptors was less then expected...with the new router the Tivo wireless adaptors are working perfectly with full strength signals in both locations at opposite ends of a 2700 SF house, and one on a different floor. In addition, the upload and download speeds with Comcast got better by about 15%. To top it all off, Wireless speed for both laptops in the house increased as well. Setup was fast and painless, even using the same network name I had been using on the old router.

Cons: Kinda expensive, but I paid $300 for mine as opposed to current price of $329

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid

Pros: Looks pretty, flip it over and it looks like a big hexbug

Cons: Range is less than my 5yr old single channel router.
Multiple connection issues. Devices either won't stay connected to the channel, or internet is lost repeatedly. Completely unusable.

Other Thoughts: Highly disappointed that Netgear's high end consumer product has so many fatal flaws. it doesn't matter how many channels there are, how many bands, how fast they are, etc, if you can't connect, stay connected, or use the internet!

Emailed Netgear at the email found on Newegg. Each time I get an auto response that the engineer is out of the office for days at a time, so I get one response per week if I'm lucky. His last response he sent a new firmware that made minor improvement, but the range is still horrible, and connects are still unusable. We have run up our cell data service while waiting and it's now costing me additional money. I'll be requesting an RMA and going back to my 5yr old router. I suppose that's what I get for trying to fix something that wasn't broken!

Manufacturer Response:

We are very sorry that you have been unable to get through to our email team. Please email us again and in the email be sure include any case numbers that you received from support as well as a copy and paste of your review.

Let them know that you are having trouble keeping the devices connected and if it ever worked properly.

5 out of 5 eggsIncremental Improvement

Pros: Impressive hardware package, nice design. Easy setup & integration with existing network equipment.

Cons: A little on the pricey side; however offers improved hardware, unique adjustable external antennas.

Other Thoughts: Sets up as described in included documentation. Offers incremental improvement over R6300 AC1750 -- but more noticeable when connecting multiple wireless devices. Recommend using auto setting that combines both 5G bands and then manages bandwidth allocation as more devices connect/consume data.

5 out of 5 eggsR8000

Pros: Very quick and intellligent dual-core processor.

Three offload processors to assist the dual-core.

Cleverly desgined antenna arrays.

Able to produce three wireless networks with three guest account networks under the main three wireless networks.

Cons: None other than -

Slightly rather large design,

but understandable and feasible architectural body for antenna array locations and thermal cooling for the heatsink.

Other Thoughts: Bricked my Netgear FVS318N during firmware update, it served an excellent four years of Gigabit service for the home. Went to retailer and did not know this propduct was available. Didn't even think twice and purchased the R8000
Having owned this device for under a week I'm quite shocked as not knowing what to expect from it. Speed tests jumped from 50Mbps to 123Mbps download and 4-5Mbps to 12-13Mbps on computer. Game console speed test was 29.8Mbps download and 6.2Mbps upload. Same internet provider and speed package. Amazed, I tranfered files, streamed online video services, and played online games. Major improvement overall on the apps, services, and load times for these. I highly recommend if you're looking for speed improvements or have multiple or high wireless traffic and need all she can give.

2 out of 5 eggsbuggy

Pros: easy to set up, works well with my devices

Cons: price, bulky, non user replaceable antennas

Other Thoughts: I previously had an Airport Extreme setup that I was getting too frustrated with signal.I then owned several R7000 and I thought they did not deliver the boost to signal strength and dependability that I felt was lacking in my apartment. The point I am making is that this R8000 is no better than my previous R7000 if not worse. The 2.4gHz signal appears to be very buggy for me.Sometimes it works, other times i have the signal strength but speeds are too slow even for just internet,no streaming. I felt that there are no added benefit as far as range is concerned in my apartment for both R7000 and R8000 stock. What I should have done is buy 2x R7000 and put them in bridge mode or something like that for better coverage area. I am just your average user and thought that for the money spent it was not worth it. I should have just bought the R7000,upgraded its antennas and maybe buy another R7000 later down the road to bridge the gap. Definitely not worth the price compared to its predecessor. If only NewEggs return policy isn't a hassle I would return this item in exchange for the R7000.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

We apologize for the problems you're seeing on the 2.4 GHz band. Have you tried either enabling or disabling QoS to see if this improves the quality? Also, which firmware version are you running? (We recently released an update that may help.)

If you continue to see problems, please get in touch with us directly at and we'll be happy to assist.

2 out of 5 eggsNot "worth" it... Price Vs Features

Pros: Wireless 5.0 Ghz:
+ R8000 has excellent consistent connection as well at full speed by ISP

Wireless 5.0 Ghz Second Connection:
+ R8000 excellent connection with full speed by ISP’s

Parental Control:
+R8000 – use OpenDNS but with dedicated service assigned to netgear so that you can add bypass account also which can’t be done with OpenDNS free account. This is the only additional benefit I found with this router so far compared to RT-66R.

LED Control:
+R8000 – very useful feature if you have your router in bedroom or other place you don’t like lot of flashing lights. Can be accessed via web GUI and with a dedicated hard button at the rear of the router.

Cons: Wired Connection:
- R8000 has fair wired connection with slight consistency issues.
- R8000 is a complete failure in terms of 2.4Gh network
I have tried all available channels and found it degrade my 120~Mbps connection 1-14 ~ Mbps

At this point I called customer service and it sounded like they kind of aware of the issue. With minimal trouble shooting and changing the channels to their recommended channels (01, 06, 09 & 11), there was no improvement. So they asked me to degrade from 600Mpbs to 289Mbps and it started working.

So technically now their claim of 3200Mbps became 2911Mbps.

Access Control:
- R8000 access control only let you allow or deny connecting a particular device. You cannot decide what time it should be able to connect. – Major drawback for me.

Parental Control:
+R8000 – also use OpenDNS but with dedicated service assigned to netgear so that you can add bypass account also which can’t be done with OpenDNS free account. This is the only additional benefit I found with this router so far compared to RT-66R.

-R8000 – did not bother to check as soon as I read that it does not support mobile devices using OpenVPN platform.

USB Storage and Cloud access:
- R8000 – could not find any documentation about cloud access. Only information I found is about ReadyCloud and it is dedicated to Netgear NAS only. Another major setback for an expensive router.

Web GUI:
Though Netgear has a simple interface and easy to follow GUI, it lack modern look and feeling. I like Asus GUI better.

Customer service:
- Netgear – Though I received prompt customer service when I called, it was shocking to learn that the phone support is only available for 90 days of purchase, then you have to pay PREMIUM subscription to get phone support.

Other Thoughts: I picked up this from my local other store so you will not see "newegg verified purchase" stamp on this review.

I bought this router to replace my perfectly working Asus RT-66R model. I wanted to change my router just to get bit more range in my new 2200sqft home. Prior to getting this router I have tried one of the best range extender Ampedwireless AE-20. It’s range was excellent, but connection was very much degraded and struggled to get connected at times though it was set up to clone settings from original router.

So, after reading mixed reviews I decided to give new Nighthawk R8000 a try. I am happy with its slightly improved range than Asus and very much disappointed with its 2.4Ghz performance. I have more than 15 years of network experience and I really don’t bother tech support unless until it is really out of my hand and hardware specific.

I wrote this review based on my experience with my Asus RT-66R and Netgear R8000.

I have thoroughly tested all important feature that I need. Rest of the features are generic to me and I am not bothered much about them.

I am sure this router with Dual 5.0Ghz network will be very useful for those who have new wireless devices. For me I have a lot of devices that depends on 2.4Ghz frequency such as smoke detectors, thermostat, laptop that connects to NAS for backup etc. and degraded and unreliable 2.4Ghz network make it absolutely worthless considering the amount I spent on this router.

I am seriously thinking to take this back to the store. I don’t see any point in spending almost double amount of money to get a couple of benefits and a lot of drawbacks and pay for a premium to get their phone support if needed to an overpriced product.

I would not recommend this router at its current price and it is unable to meet its original claims.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Jacob - thanks for your detailed review and for being a NETGEAR customer. We want to investigate the 2.4 GHz issues you're having. Our engineers would like to work with you directly on this -- please email us at with a copy/paste of this review, and we'll look forward to resolving the problems. Any additional info on the 2.4 GHz devices you are using will also be helpful.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Impressed

Pros: Looks cool on the rack shelf, tri-band is good in theory.

Replaced a D-Link DIR-655. Moved to an large, old house with lots of concrete, and lath and plaster. The signals were not making it to the upper floor.

Cons: Where to start.
Setup was a pain. It detected another router and recommended Access Point mode, which didn't work. After unsuccessfully doing anything with it, I had to do a hard reset and override the recommendation to setup as normal.

Set up 3 networks instead of a single network with access to all three bands.
The 2.4Ghz will make it to the upper floor, but at ~50% strength. The 5Ghz won't make it past the main floor (router is in the basement).

We have multiple network devices NAS, Printers, etc. I was unable to figure out how to set a fixed IP for them within the router. So if the router is rebooted, they get new IPs, and everything has to be remapped on all the computers/devices (HUGE PAIN!!)

The biggest issue to date is the fact that the wireless connection is repeatedly lost (Firmware V1.0.0.102_1.0.45). This happens on multiple devices (Samsung Tab 2, LG G-Pad, HTC One M8, Motorola Maxx HD, Kindle Fire, Windows 7 Laptop).

No discernable speed improvements over the D-Link in wireless activity.

Will contact support for assistance, but may end up going back.

Other Thoughts: Due to the size of the thing, I wish there was a way to rackmount it.

Seriously debating going back to my old D-Link and just using external antennas.

Extremely underwhelming for the price.

Manufacturer Response:

Hey Dizzy,

Thank you for your detailed review. If you have already contacted support team and still need assistance-- you can contact us at We will be glad to help you there.

We are sorry that you aren't completely satisfied and hope to hear from you soon.

1 out of 5 eggsFIRM UP THE FIRMWARE!!

Pros: Looks
Speed when working

Cons: Drops internet connection
Drops mapped drive connections
Sporadic speeds
Duplicate IP errors
No more range than the NETGEAR WNDR4500/N900

Other Thoughts: I have a rather complex network in my home and purchased this for increased speed and range.

What I'm getting so far is a giant headache for all the reasons mentioned above.

A huge waste of money at this point. Should have waited!!

Hopefully Netgear will firm up the firmware and soon, or I'm out.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi PBusardo,

The problems you're having with dropped connections, speeds, and other issues you mention are definitely not normal, and we want to help ASAP. We stand behind the R8000. We did just release a firmware update, v1.0.0.102 -- we recommend that you update to this latest version to see if it resolves the problems. If not, our engineers will work with you directly to troubleshoot, or we'll get you a replacement if needed under warranty.

Please email us at, and we'll be in touch. We look forward to getting things running for you soon!
