5 out of 5 eggsLast powerline networking experience was a TP-Link (similar specs) -- this gave me way less trouble!

Pros: -easy to set up
-instructions simple to follow

Cons: can't think of a complaint.

Other Thoughts: i'm not mad at my similar TP-Link purchase, but this one was easier to set up. it was for a friend (not myself, with a more complex setup)...but they probably could have done it themselves with very little headache and 20 more minutes than it took me. not bad at all

2 out of 5 eggsWas very happy with the range extender for couple of weeks and then it is DEAD

Pros: - It was easy to set-up
- provided 80MB of connectivity and jitter free 720p media streaming

Cons: - Go disconnected few time in my use of 10 days
- you need to reboot (cycle power) on the range extender
- dead in 10 days

Other Thoughts: I have been using Netgear products for many many years.
I bought to create an access point at a central place. It provided "Excellent" signal to all corners of 3 floors single family home.
I submitted a ticket to Netgear just now. I will report my experience with them here.

4 out of 5 eggsThis is an amended review, post-installation

Pros: Inexpensive - turned out to be $20 after rebate. Newegg got it to me in a day.

****************

After a frustrating time setting it up, the thing works great. The instructions that came with it are kinda useless - the devices and lights on them do not behave the way the little pamphlet says they should.

Nonetheless, I got it working, although I have no real idea whether I managed to get a secure connection going or not. Not too worried about somebody breaking into my powerline network at the moment.

Cons: Truly horrid documentation. Seriously pathetic. It starts with the 2nd page of the Quick Start Guide, where the sizes of the two items are confusingly wrong, then goes on to the actual installation, where the pictures of which device connects to the router and which one to device that needs a hardware link show THE SAME BOX on both ends. How is that helpful, Netgear? It's just lazy to not have even checked that.

Then there's the full manual: there isn't one. The Netgear site does not have one. All I really needed to find out is if it was possible to turn of the wireless portion of this product, use it strictly wired, but it's IMPOSSIBLE to find that info anywhere.

Just a little more effort on Netgear's part with the documentation would have made things so much simpler for both the newbie and experienced geek.

Other Thoughts: At $20 after rebate, I'll play with it. At the original $60 price, I would have been livid at how badly this thing is documented. I'm usually a big Netgear fan. Their stuff works. I haven't hooked this up yet, so can't comment on performance, but they need to do a MUCH better job of documenting their stuff. There's such a thing as frustratingly too simple.

*********

The thing has been running for about 10 days now. It's providing Internet to a TiVo in a remote part of the house, and it's doing a fine job of it. No issues at all so far.

Here's what they don't tell you ANYWHERE: You can log into the thing from a browser using its assigned IP address, which you can get from your router. In my case, it was http://192.168.29.192. The login default user is admin, and I believe there is no password. From there you can do stuff like turn off wireless (which I did) and check and change setup parameters. I tried using Netgear's app on my phone and that turned out to be utterly worthless. I haven't installed their network utility on my desktop, and may not if things continue to work.

I changed the rating from two eggs to four, because it does seem to work consistently well.

4 out of 5 eggsTakes some setup but works great

Pros: If you are looking to avoid the chaos of wireless for extending your network in the home, including streaming video and improved wireless coverage these things are great. They exceeded my admittedly low-to-moderate expectations.

- Plug and play for a simple setup worked just as advertised
- 250Mb connection (will vary from home to home based on wiring quality)
- Able to secure the powerline network with personal code to maintain security.
- Provides a basic wireless connection as well as a wired connection at the remote end of the powerline network.

Cons: Setup is a bit more tedious than one would hope for. you must connect to one of the devices from your computer to configure it with software you download from NetGear if you want to do anything other than the default plug-and-play setup (I wanted to secure the powerline network and merge 2 kits into providing me with 3 remote drops from 1 single device connected to the main router.) (for configuration I recommend connecting them all in the room your computer is in and getting them all set up to your satisfaction, testing them, and marking them with destination IDs. then when completed just walk around your house and install in the sockets you had planned).

-Setup is a little trial and error until you get the hang of it.
-Documentation included was for an older model or revision(similar but not exactly the same as what I received)

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm impressed with the capabilities. I'll post back if I run into any issues, but a month in and going strong with no issues at all, even when streaming HD video.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks but poor instructions

Pros: Good connectivity. Netgear Genie program.

Cons: Poor instructions. Requires Netgear Genie software, WiFi enabled PC and Ethernet cable to configure. Couldn't get reset button to reset. Not sure if it ever connected securely.

Other Thoughts: I have AT&T wireless which has been dropping out for 10s of seconds at a time. (AT&T gave me a wireless extender which sits 7 feet from their router and periodically shows a red status light.) Bought this to bypass their wireless and now I don't get the drops. Setup makes a big deal about connecting securely but I'm not sure that it works right. You are supposed to wait until the lights flash and then push a button on each unit within 1 minute. The light stopped flashing before I pushed the buttons. Hooked them up backwards the first time. The big unit is the wireless transmitter so needs to go where you want the wireless. The little unit goes by the router. Configuring the WiFi the first time worked like one of their extenders but the second time I had to use arp -a to find the IP address. and login that way. Never could get the Genie to let me configure it but perhaps if I had connected my wireless device to it with a cable like it says it might work. Genie did show me that the AT&T router was using the same channel as 5 neighboring units so that was probably my original problem.
