You've got the network – now make it wireless with the Linksys WAP54G Access Point. It uses Wireless-G technology for broad coverage and faster data speeds than the older standards (when used with compatible wireless adapters), while still being fully backwards compatible — perfect for mixed-mode environments.
Adding devices to your new wireless network couldn't be easier – simply push the button on the AP, and on any SecureEasySetup-enabled device, and you are set! Configuration is a breeze, too, thanks to the browser-based configuration utility. Full wireless security is provided with WEP and WPA encryption algorithms. This lets you keep your data secure and prevents bandwidth theft that can slow your network down.
Linksys is an impressive presence in the networking world, and the WAP54G is one good reason why.

WAP54G
- Pros: I'm writing this because I didn't see it covered sufficiently in other reviews and I'm hoping someone will find this helpful.
I have a Linksys WRT54G router operating in Access Point mode. I added this WAP54G to act as a wireless bridge between two wired networks in my house. Also, I wanted the WRT54G to continue to provide access to wireless clients in addition to being one end of the bridge.
Now, the WAP54G has a four different modes, but what I found out the hard way is that three of them won't work with the WRT54G when it's in Access Point mode: "Wireless Bridge," "AP Client mode," and the standard "Access point" mode. These three simply don't work in the configuration I described. "Wireless Bridge" and "AP Client" only create a successful bridge if encryption is disabled.
Continued in "Cons"...
- Cons: Fortunately, and undocumentedly, the fourth mode, "Wireless Repeater" (which is NOT what I was trying to do!) actually does exactly what I want. It leaves the original WRT54G open to wireless clients, as well as repeating the signal for added coverage, BUT what's terrific is that if you plug a switch into the WAP54G (DON'T use the "uplink" port on the switch), the "Wireless Repeater" mode does actually create a perfectly-operating bridge to the other side of the network, and it works fine with the encryption modes I tested.
So, that's my little bit of wisdom for you: The "Wireless Repeater" mode also creates a wireless bridge, and it's the only mode on the WAP54G that does this AND works with encryption enabled.
it's an access point, not a router
- Pros: i deployed one of these at work to connect two building with an 802.11g ethernet bridge. it was an upgrade from an 11b setup, the performance is noticaby faster. we are able to connect remote PC's, and a thin client over the link with decent speed.
- Cons: this router is subject to interference especially in urban areas (like downtown cincinnati in my case). you will have to experiment with the channels if you find that it's slow, and you may have to change them often. this isn't linksys's or newegg's fault, but it is something to think about if you are deciding between a wireless setup and a wired one.
- Other Thoughts: some dude called this device a router and complained that it only had one ethernet port and that it was "wireless only".
this is an access point, not a router. there is no NAT, no firewall, and no DHCP server built into it. all it will do is hook your wireless clients to your wired network. if you do not already have a nat/dhcp/firewall set up, do not purchase this device.

LINKSYS WRT54GL ROUTER
- Pros: THE HARDWARE IS PROBABLY FAIRLY RELIABLE, IF YOU OWN A PC. ON THE MAC, IT'S A NIGHTMARE!
- Cons: THERE IS NO SET UP WIZARD FOR THE MAC. IF YOU OWN A MAC, DO NOT BUY THE WRT54GL, UNLESS YOU WANT TO STAY ON THE PHONE FOR AN HOUR OR MORE, TALKING TO A PERSON IN A FOREIGN LAND WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH AS SECOND LANGUAGE, AND IS READING INSTRUCTIONS FROM A SCREEN.
Solid AP
- Pros: This is a very solid AP with an easy to use interface. However it is really only good for basic use. if you really want to unlock this devices true potential get ddwrt and load it on here however i would not do this unless you know what you are doing because it can brick the AP.
- Cons: limited out of the box but not so much a con as just an expected
- Other Thoughts: Def. buy i have bought 8 of these they are Great!
What setup?
- Pros: You plug it in, and you're done. Instant available wireless signal, great strength. I run my laptop, a netbook and my 360 off it at the same time. They all network flawlessly and anywhere in my 1000 square foot living space. My connection comes from an ethernet cable ran about 100 feet from the main router to my network switch which is connected via wired to my desktop and wired to this AP obviously. It works with no hassles.
- Cons: It doesn't download anything for me, and doesn't rub my feet.
- Other Thoughts: It does require some setup to activate security setting, like any other wireless device. If you are like me and don't need to worry too much about people stealing your bandwith, then you just plug it in and forget about it. Full bars anywhere in a smaller living area. One day I'll drive down the road with my laptop to gauge the range, lol.
