You just got your high speed modem (it could be cable, DSL, fiber optics . . . something nifty), and you've got your computers, and you've got your wireless interface cards. Now you need the final element: the router.

With four wired ports and the wireless connection, you're ready to take on the Internet and all it has to offer. Or maybe you just need a local network off the 'Net for your small office. Maybe you'll hook your desktop up by cable, and carry your wireless laptop to your favorite seat. Control and configuration are easy with browsers like Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox 3.0. (It's best to do your configuration from a hard-wired connection, not the wireless.)

Could this be the router for you? That's your decision, not ours. We'll be here, cheerfully waiting while you make up your mind.

5 out of 5 eggsEye of the Tiger

Pros: The Linksys WRT54GL goes the distance and is a champion like ROCKY!!! It is the "Industry Gold Standard" for 80211g WiFi. I have installed hundreds if not thousands of these over the last decade in the IT field having worked for Comp~USA, Circuit~City and Best~Buy~Geek~Squad. I personally own seven of them all flashed with DD-WRT and bridged to maximize signal strength. More often than not you will experience peace of mind owning this model because it has a Phenomenal SPI firewall which rivals every competitor on the market today! Out of the box, its OEM stealth mode keeps you invisible from Hackers. I have yet to test a router that surpasses the Quality of this Beast! ~ A MUST BUY!!! ~

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: I wish CISCO decided to manufacture the Linksys WRT54GL with 80211n and Gigabyte Ethernet Support. The original design feature was very simple and allowed similar looking switches or routers to stack on top of each other keeping wires organized. The best part was when consumers had the ability to upgrade their external antenna to increase DBI and instantly boost signal strength, which was a major plus back in the day! I am disgusted with the newer models because the internal antenna is hidden inside the shell design preventing owners from upgrading. It's a real shame to see corporations cutting corners to make a profit these days while engineering garbage and marketing expensive junk. I consider the Linksys WRT54GL to be the "Last of the Mohicans" when it comes to the extinction of owning the best of the best! Over the course of the year I plan to purchase this product at least a dozen more times to enjoy inside my Fallout Shelter, just in case... Stock up while supplies last!!!

5 out of 5 eggsThe greatest i've owned

Pros: very reliable. reasonable price

Cons: wish it had n/n+ capability

Other Thoughts: i had a belkin 3rd gen for about 2 years and it had major QoS fails and was terrible with Dynamic ip. the ip address was set to change every 20-24 hours according to isp and belkin would d/c every time. so constantly had to power cycle both modem and router. after buying this it restored my faith in routers and let me see not all home wifi is terrible. Thank you linksys/cisco i truly thank you

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a great router!

Pros: This router is prefect for the DD-WRT firmware.
Once flashed, this router can do almost anything.

If you don't have one, buy one!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Even if you have a router at home or in your office already, you need to give this bad boy a spin with the DD-WRT firmware.

5 out of 5 eggsLove This Router

Pros: DD-WRT! Makes this entire router feel like some kind of enterprise setup rather than feeling limited by the stock firmware.

For the price, this router has a lot of possibilities and is one of the most stable I've been witness to (in the price range). Set it up and forget it.

Cons: A little dated. Obviously does not feature Wireless-N, Gb ethernet ports.

Other Thoughts: Had a bolt of lightning fry my last one like this. Immediately ordered a replacement. I don't know how I would survive with a non DD-WRT compatible router. Price is great and once you get things set to where you want, hardly any maintenance needed to keep my network straight and sorted.

2 out of 5 eggsKept Disconnecting

Pros: Worked ok when it worked

Cons: Kept disconnecting my internet connection. Would have to power cycle the router to fix! So I returned it!

Other Thoughts: After researching on the internet, I found others who had the same issue.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

Pros: I can't say more than what has already been said. I bought this to replace an old router that kept losing signal every 2 days, and this router has been holding up with 8 wireless devices for 2 weeks now with no cough ups. Overall great router, easy setup.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Great router, great signal, easy setup.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router, albeit dated

Pros: Reliable, reliable, reliable. I've been using this router for years with no issues until recently, and my problem had little to do with the unit's capabilities.

I've been using it as the primary firewall/gateway for my home network; a recent examination of household devices explained why I was resetting the WRT every few days. I had as many as eight wired devices (via daisy-chained switch) and as many as eight wireless devices.

I've since upgraded to a dual radio N router with gigabit ports, but I still have the WRT on-line to handle the remaining handful of G devices.

Cons: Dated technology, not gigabit, not N capable.

Other Thoughts: I definitely got my money's worth. I've always used the stock firmware without issues.
