You just got your high speed modem (it's cable, DSL, fiber optics, something nifty), and you've got your computers, and you've got your wireless interface cards. Now we need the final element: the router.

With four wired ports and the wireless connection, you're ready to take on the Internet and all it has to offer. Or maybe you just need a local network off the 'Net for your small office. Maybe you'll hook your desktop up by cable, and carry your wireless laptop to your favorite sitting spot. Control and configuration are easy with browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0, Firefox 2.0, or Safari 3.0 (or newer). (It's best to do your configuration from a hard-wired connection, not the wireless.)

Could this be the router for you? Could be. That's your decision, not ours.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Simple design, plug it in and go. Stock firmware has enough options for most people.

Cons: Signal strength is spotty compared with my old Belkin router. There are certain places in my house where the signal drops off significantly, and it's consistently in the same places. I'm sure there's some kind interference, but the old Belkin was not bothered by it. The Belkin had 3 external antennas, this Linksys has internal only.

Other Thoughts: It's been nearly a year and it's still working fine. Have to reboot it once in a while, but I always blame it on Comcast. (Actually, I'm blaming all my life's problems on Comcast at this point!)

3 out of 5 eggsnot everyone needs top of the line

Pros: - Will do what MOST users want / need

- Simple setup for the non-tech inclined
- Setup program actually works if you use it
- QoS

- Can run dd-wrt (v1.3 or older only for now) (highly recommended!)

Cons: - internal antennas (The internal antennas are just about as strong as the stock antennas on older routers I've had)

Other Thoughts: Setting up some simple QoS greatly improves network responsiveness, regardless the device you're using. I always give ports 80 and 443 the highest priority, so web traffic won't slow down much because of services eating away at the bandwidth. My wife's laptop also gets highest priority, so she doesn't complain too much when I'm downloading massive amounts.

Using different DNS server's can also greatly improve site loading times. I use openDNS as my DNS server, and couldn't be happier.

You get what you need here. An inexpensive, yet very reliable 4 port wireless router. Linksys's stock firmware gives all functionality most people will ever need, including decent QoS. v1.3 and older run dd-wrt micro flawlessly.

1 out of 5 eggsWorthless Junk

Pros: Looks nice. Sleek finish and design. The signal strength in my house was very good.

Cons: Slow page loads and it loves to time out constantly. Not the internet because going with the old router and routerless has no problems. This is worse than the spotty router I replaced.

Other Thoughts: When I took it out of the box the plastic was HOT to the touch. It did not sit outside, I took it from the delivery driver's hands. The UPS truck must have been like an oven. This may have contributed to the problems I have had.

5 out of 5 eggsthe best basic router

Pros: no more antenna outside but more reliable than the previous generation models with the antenna. you no longer have to power cycle after several hours of usage. best for wireless web browsing and playing PS3 games over the internet

Cons: slow at large files transfer with wireless connection

Other Thoughts: you may want to get more expensive model if you want to stream large video files with wireless option but then again most network activities use less than 100 mbps anyway

2 out of 5 eggsConfiguration Limitation

Pros: No antennas.

Cons: I just purchase version 1.5 of this model. I am unable to configure this as a access point. I can set it up as a gateway router, but instead I need the router as an access point.

Other Thoughts: Others mentioned you cannot upgrade version 1.5 of this router with other 3rd party firmware.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

Pros: Incredibly easy setup, only took about 5 minutes. Works just as fast wirelessly as it does if my computer is hooked up directly to my modem. I have an 800 square foot apartment and it works no matter where I am, even when I'm outside on my porch

Cons: None that I have found yet

Other Thoughts: For the price this is a great router. Looks great sitting on my desk and anyone could set it up.

1 out of 5 eggs1 year 4 months

Pros: Worked well...

Cons: for a year and 4 months. Then it stopped. Our mobile devices and the Wii wouldnt hold the connection. This happened very suddenly, i tried changing the channel and resetting the router. Updated the software, pulled the power to reboot it. Everything I have read about troubleshooting only worked briefly.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

Pros: Very reliable product. Works great right out of the box as a router. You do need to enable WPA security on wireless and should change the admin pwd. But all in all - great product and easy to use.

Cons: I don't like the Linksys automatic security config stuff for the wireless. I find it much easier to manually configure it. The software on the CD is not good. I would throw the CD in the trash upon opening the box.

Other Thoughts: Our company has installed over 100 of these in both residential and business environments. If you throw away the included CD, you will be happy with this product!

1 out of 5 eggsProblems with Internet

Pros: When it was working, it was alright. The design is nice. The default linksys firmware is as good as it has been. Great Linksys support.

Cons: After a few months, my internet started getting 50%-75% packet loss. I thought it was Comcast modem, but after direct connection, I understood the router is causing the problems. I contacted Linksys support, and they told me to update the firmware, and that fixed the packet loss problem, but not all problems were solved.

However, websites are still super slow (even though 23 Mbps internet according to speedtest), some websites simply do not work (including gmail, google maps, digg etc). In some sites it continues to "load" for HOURS, even after the page has loaded.

No antennas, so the range isn't perfect, but it's OK (can use it fine in one bedroom house).

Other Thoughts: You should get the linksys with the antennas, that one is a better product. I'm just gonna go buy some other brand at the moment.

4 out of 5 eggsGood router for wireless novice

Pros: Router was purchased for someone in my family for their first wireless network. Works fine for this purpose. Small footprint, stylish looks, good signal.

Cons: Software is a bit intrusive. If you know anything about routers, then just set it up using the web GUI instead of the included CD.
