You just got your high speed modem (it's cable, DSL, fiber optics, something nifty), and you've got your computers, and you've got your wireless interface cards. Now we need the final element: the router.
With four wired ports and the wireless connection, you're ready to take on the Internet and all it has to offer. Or maybe you just need a local network off the 'Net for your small office. Maybe you'll hook your desktop up by cable, and carry your wireless laptop to your favorite sitting spot. Control and configuration are easy with browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0, Firefox 2.0, or Safari 3.0 (or newer). (It's best to do your configuration from a hard-wired connection, not the wireless.)
Could this be the router for you? Could be. That's your decision, not ours.
Pros: Nice appearance. Sleek and small foot print. Advanced setup. Would be a good choice for maybe a 2 bedroom apartment or small office.
Cons: My setup is highspeed broadband cable internet. WRT54G2 DOES NOT have the effective range of a router with external antennas. Bought this router to replace an old Linksys WRT54G router with 2 external antennas. My installation was in a mid size house with basement. The router was in the middle of the basement against the back wall and the computers on the top level in the far bedrooms. Distance from router approx. 25' and 8' down. With the new WRT54G2 my signal was 20% less and speed was variable. I returned the WRT54G2 and bought another WRT54G with external antennas. I now have full signal and full speed.
Other Thoughts: Whatever router you purchase, if you have a large area make sure the router has at least 1 external antenna. If does make a difference.

Annoyance could have been me

Pros: This router is sleek and definately matched my black Eee PC. Also fits the decor of my room. I have trusted Linksys for almost a decade as the defacto networking hardware. After this router I have my doubts. Once set up it is excellent. You can change the router name, enable/disable wireless mode and also not broadcast the SSID for added security.
Cons: Installed software is useless. While I violated the "rule" to not connect anything until running the CD, the software did not detect the router. Setup took over an hour rather than 5 minutes.
Other Thoughts: Do a manual setup of the router - it's faster: 1) Connect everything but the power cords 2) Plug in the power for the router, then the modem 3) Open a browser window and go to 192.168.1.1 4) There is no username, the password is 'admin' 5) Change the settings here - CHANGE PASSWORDS FIRST! 6) After saving the last setting change close the window, click START, Run, type 'cmd' or 'command' 7) Type 'ipconfig/release. Once you can type again enter 'ipconfig/renew' 8) Your router is ready to go.

A Good, Basic Router
Reviewed By: Nick from Ludlow on 11/21/2008
Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: The Linksys WRT54G2 is a case redesign using the same internal components as the WRT54G v.8, with the antennas relocated inside the casing. My initial concerns that this might have an impact on range have been cleared, as I find that I get as good, if not better range with this router than I did with my old WRT54G.
Like the WRT54G v.8, the WRT54G2 has limited flash memory available for third-party firmwares, so the "micro" version of DD-WRT must be used in lieu of the full version, if you wish to load an alternative firmware.
By all accounts, however, this router is perfectly fine for the average user with the factory-supplied firmware. I'm able to max-out my downstream 10 Mb cable internet connection, and it has been reliable and running cool to the touch since I first set it up a week or so ago.
If you're not craving 802.11n or the advanced functionality of the full DD-WRT, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by this router.
Cons: Low flash memory restricts use of third-party firmwares, such as DD-WRT, to "micro" versions tailored for routers with less flash memory.
Other Thoughts: The WRT54G gets a lot of heat in the enthusiast community for having half the flash of the WRT54GL and shipping with a VxWorks firmware, but for the average home user, this router is more than adequate.

Cons: I just purchase version 1.5 of this model. I am unable to configure this as a access point. I can set it up as a gateway router, but instead I need the router as an access point.
Other Thoughts: Others mentioned you cannot upgrade version 1.5 of this router with other 3rd party firmware.

Great Router

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Incredibly easy setup, only took about 5 minutes. Works just as fast wirelessly as it does if my computer is hooked up directly to my modem. I have an 800 square foot apartment and it works no matter where I am, even when I'm outside on my porch
Cons: None that I have found yet
Other Thoughts: For the price this is a great router. Looks great sitting on my desk and anyone could set it up.

Pros: Worked well...
Cons: for a year and 4 months. Then it stopped. Our mobile devices and the Wii wouldnt hold the connection. This happened very suddenly, i tried changing the channel and resetting the router. Updated the software, pulled the power to reboot it. Everything I have read about troubleshooting only worked briefly.
