You just got your high speed modem (it's cable, DSL, fiber optics, something nifty), and you've got your computers, and you've got your wireless interface cards. Now we need the final element: the router.
With four wired ports and the wireless connection, you're ready to take on the Internet and all it has to offer. Or maybe you just need a local network off the 'Net for your small office. Maybe you'll hook your desktop up by cable, and carry your wireless laptop to your favorite sitting spot. Control and configuration are easy with browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0, Firefox 2.0, or Safari 3.0 (or newer). (It's best to do your configuration from a hard-wired connection, not the wireless.)
Could this be the router for you? Could be. That's your decision, not ours.
Pros: Nice appearance. Sleek and small foot print. Advanced setup. Would be a good choice for maybe a 2 bedroom apartment or small office.
Cons: My setup is highspeed broadband cable internet. WRT54G2 DOES NOT have the effective range of a router with external antennas. Bought this router to replace an old Linksys WRT54G router with 2 external antennas. My installation was in a mid size house with basement. The router was in the middle of the basement against the back wall and the computers on the top level in the far bedrooms. Distance from router approx. 25' and 8' down. With the new WRT54G2 my signal was 20% less and speed was variable. I returned the WRT54G2 and bought another WRT54G with external antennas. I now have full signal and full speed.
Other Thoughts: Whatever router you purchase, if you have a large area make sure the router has at least 1 external antenna. If does make a difference.

Annoyance could have been me

Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: This router is sleek and definately matched my black Eee PC. Also fits the decor of my room. I have trusted Linksys for almost a decade as the defacto networking hardware. After this router I have my doubts. Once set up it is excellent. You can change the router name, enable/disable wireless mode and also not broadcast the SSID for added security.
Cons: Installed software is useless. While I violated the "rule" to not connect anything until running the CD, the software did not detect the router. Setup took over an hour rather than 5 minutes.
Other Thoughts: Do a manual setup of the router - it's faster: 1) Connect everything but the power cords 2) Plug in the power for the router, then the modem 3) Open a browser window and go to 192.168.1.1 4) There is no username, the password is 'admin' 5) Change the settings here - CHANGE PASSWORDS FIRST! 6) After saving the last setting change close the window, click START, Run, type 'cmd' or 'command' 7) Type 'ipconfig/release. Once you can type again enter 'ipconfig/renew' 8) Your router is ready to go.

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: looks good, very easy setup, very - very inconsistent wireless performance
Cons: in less than 2 weeks, I have owned 3, I will be returning the 3rd one this Saturday. If you read the good reviews -- most people have upgraded the modem, with 3 party firmware. The bad reviews mention that you need to upgrade the firmware, with 3rd party software. It is not very hard, but most people don't know how to do this and it does void the warranty. Even then they only last about a year. So I am going to spend a little more for an older , more reliable linksys model from newegg. Each new model I have tried has been more expensive and has poorer performance. We are talking 3 bad units right out of the box!! The last one was $100, I started at $40, all were on sale!

Failed 1yr 2mos
Reviewed By: Fred on 3/6/2010
Tech Level: high - Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: The device worked great as a wired router. It did a good job as a replacement to my failed Netgear router.
Cons: I was disappointed this router didn't have the capability to store common names when the wireless MAC filter was turned on. Come on, who remembers what xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx is? It also didn't have the capability to assign static IP's based on MAC/DNS. No biggie. Other than these, the router worked ok for the first year. After that I started having frequent wireless drop-outs (although the wired was solid). I did a site survey and tried every channel combination but with no improvement. After a slow, painful 2 months of this the router failed. The only WAN IP it will resolve is loopback. I tried all my tricks and even sat on the phone with Cisco/Linksys for 30 minutes with no fix. To add insult to injury, they offered me a refurb for three dollars less that I bought this one new.
Other Thoughts: I've done a lot of research on routers and despite decent reviews (no router gets excellent reviews) it failed miserably just after the warranty period. The quality of Linksys equipment seems impacted now that Cisco owns the brand.

Buyer Beware - Very Disappointed

Pros: Easy installation
Wirless worked great for about 3 weeks
Hard wire connection still works
Cons: I bought this router (not from newegg) for an apartment and after about 3 weeks, it would randomly disconnect and reconnect myself and my roommates on the wireless network about every 10 minutes. This became extremely frustrating. I tried restarting it with no effect. I updated the firmware and now the wireless network does not work at all.
Other Thoughts: I went back out and picked up the older LINKSYS WRT54GL IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Broadband Router and I have had no issues at all.
