Linksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab, 802.11a/b/g, Draft 802.11n

Pros: Has stood the test of time and is the workhorse of my wireless house. Support by linksys hasn't been perfect but using their resources have always managed to get the answer (eventually) to my questions.

Cons: it cant get me a beer out of the fridge.

Other Thoughts: i'm kind of lazy so adding on to my purchase i also bought the network magic software. i lock my network and make any adjustments i need to using that software.
it's not the newest product they sell anymore but they are still providing firmware updates etc. That continued support and overall quality will make me a customer for life.

Pros: I bought this back in 2009 (I mentioned in another review that I don't write reviews until I've had the item for a while - to really test it out), anyway I'm still using this router. The only negative I have is that the wireless signal is not as strong as I need it to be. I've owned a few other name brand routers, but I feel Linksys/Cisco is the best.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: As I mentioned the wireless signal is not as strong as I need it, but that might be my fault. I'm a tech junky and my house is so wired that I'm probably causing the interference in the wireless signal from the router.

Pros: I've had this router turned on since May of 2009 without EVER powering it down. I can count the number of times I've had to reboot it on 1 finger. It doesn't overheat, it's never flaky, and I can have a 2TB media server without needed another computer. There is never any interference with my house phones or cell phones.

I get a strong signal at my neighbors house 2 doors down (about 50 yards through another house)

The USB link streams my media to 3 devices (2 wireless, 1 cabled) simultaneously without ANY interference whatsoever (This includes ripped BD movies streaming from my PS3). I can push a lot of traffic around my home network and still play online games with good latency. (While playing WoW, from Chicago to their Boston data center my latency never EVER goes over 40)

The setup is cake, everything worked perfectly the first time I did, and I've never had to change anything.

Cons: None. This isn't really a con because I download files straight to the drive now, but when I did the initially file copy of almost a 1TB and it took a few hours to finish... be smarter than me and copy the files to your drive beforehand. Read speeds are MUCH faster than write speeds

Other Thoughts: If you have any technical expertise, don't use the CD they give you, it just adds confusion to something that's pretty simple.

I read a lot about heating problems, mine is in the basement on a shelf and it not in contact with ANY hardware that might heat it up. I often see people put their modems on top or underneath the router.

Change your gateway to 192.168.1.5 for added security
Use WPA2/AES and make your pass some sort of algorithm or keyboard pattern
Keep a cap on the number of DHCP users you allow on your network to a few over the number of devices you have and set a 24 hour release time.
DON'T OPEN ANY PORTS!!!!!

Pros: * admin interface (192.168.1.1) is easy to use and does not require additional software.
* good wireless signal strength
* reliable (I got the version 1 hardware)

Cons: It is my impression that the latest firmware (1.03) uses a hardcoded private key for its admin interface SSL encryption, not an immediate security threat, but it makes me unhappy :(

Other Thoughts: the router can get a little warm/hot

Pros: Great Router - IF KEPT COOL.

Easy to setup. Great signal and performance for Media Center, NetFlix and XBOX Live using Wireless N and Gigabit Wired.

Cons: DESIGN FLAW - In talking to local retailers a lot of Linksys routers are returned because they overheat and become flaky. Apparently Linksys has perpetuated this problem to the newer Valet models...

SYMPTOMS - Random network failures from overheating during increased network traffic. Linksys tech support sent me another when they couldn't figure out why my network kept dropping - same problem. THE ROUTER WILL FAIL UNTIL COOLED.

WORKAROUND - Keep the WRT610N cool by placing it on top of a PC Case fan or on top of a USB powered laptop cooler. Solution I use: My WRT610N is plugged into and resting on a Thermaltake Massive23 ST laptop cooler - the overheating problems vanished (cooler available for around $30) . This should work for other routers with a USB port for attached storage.

Another Workaround from the web: others have cracked the case to replace/add heat sinks internally to the router but this voids your warranty...

Other Thoughts: RATING: 4-5 for Router when cooled
RATING: 0 when not cooled.

Great Router if you use a cooler as described above. Retailers should bundle coolers with Linksys routers until Linksys fixes the design flaw.

DO NOT BUY WITHOUT COOLING as the router will overheat and become unreliable.

Pros: Blazing fast. Works fine with wireless links to TV via a Roku box to a room 30' away. Fine with guest links which is a nice extra. Satisfied now that I got one that works.

Cons: Had a real problem with 4 of these. Cisco honored warranty but I had to pay shipping back to Cisco which in this case amounted to in excess of $80.00 bucko's. They would not budge and compensate me. I believe Cisco product to be worth the money but question customer service.

Other Thoughts: Leading edge technology. Setup is a breeze with CD provided. Just follow directions.

Pros: Reliable (has been working for over a year and only reset a couple times), range is excellent, speed is consistent (a different room 30ft away has speed of 300 mbps), dual band is great (5Ghz). Easy to use and set-up.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Bought my first one open box and it did not have a power cable so the store supplied me one. The cable fried the router. The store graciously replaced the router with a new one and there have been no problems ever since.

I have an xbox 360 wired to it 1 PC and 3 laptops wirelessly corresponding with the router. All connections are great and port forwarding and and setting up static IP addresses was fairly straight forward.

Pros: Delivered very quickly.

Pros: easy to set up using manual mode

Cons: instructions are lame but seemed to get it going first time through

Other Thoughts: I bought it with caution and wanted something to replace my linksys g router. It never has shut me down and I have only rebooted it once ... would buy another.

Pros: None - not reliable.

Cons: I had to reset the router once per month. I finally started saving the config to save time. My power went out and the router never came on again and it was plugged into a power conditioning surge protector. I contacted Linksys and they informed me it was out of warranty but they'd be happy for me to pay for tech support or I could buy another device. The GB wired speed was poor as well.

Other Thoughts: Sorry Linksys but this is my last Linksys device. After paying close to $200, battling it for nearly 1 year and experiencing your tech support I'm out.
