You just got your high speed modem (it could be cable, DSL, fiber optics . . . something nifty), and you've got your computers, and you've got your wireless interface cards. Now you need the final element: the router.
With four wired ports and the wireless connection, you're ready to take on the Internet and all it has to offer. Or maybe you just need a local network off the 'Net for your small office. Maybe you'll hook your desktop up by cable, and carry your wireless laptop to your favorite sitting spot. Control and configuration are easy with browsers like Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox 3.0 (or newer). (It's best to do your configuration from a hard-wired connection, not the wireless.)
Could this be the router for you? That's your decision, not ours. We'll be here, cheerfully waiting for you while you make up your mind.
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: The router has a very good set of features
Cons: This router will not function properly under the defaults it ships with. Make sure you set the 2.4Ghz band to G-only and the 5Ghz Band to N-only, i also recommend setting the 2.4Ghz band to a specific channel (6 or 11) and the 5Ghz to wide channels.
Other Thoughts: I can see this product being improved a lot by firmware work either through Linksys getting their act together OR by dd-wrt adding support in the near future.

EEK!

Tech Level: high - Ownership: less than 1 day
Pros: Sleek, cool looking, similar to a Civic with a body kit and rims. It may *look* fast, but its not.
Cons: Where to start. In the one day I spent helping my buddy set this thing up, the little $#!% should have come with a bottle of Advil. LELA didn't work, so I tried to fall back to manual config. Couldn't get DD-WRT to work on it after giving that up. Finally we set it up using minimalist configuration just to get it working, and the signal is junk. Poor software (firmware) and poor hardware (antenna, or apparent lack thereof) make this an average device, only mildly better than netgeer junk; still leaps and bounds above d-link though.
MAJOR con: This replaced the WRT600N, which is now no longer available!!!
Other Thoughts: I would have thought that Linksys, made by CISCO (I have many certifications and have taken CISCO classes, I'm not new to networking...), would have had the whole internal-antenna thing worked out before implementing it into a consumer device. I have never held much stock in Linksys firmware, and this time I didn't have a chance to double check the compatibility of DD-WRT before purchase (I didn't buy it). Firmware, often (exception being this device) is the only thing wrong with Linksys stuff. I would put this in the lower end lineup of Linksys devices, try to find a WRT600N, use Bays of the "e" variety if you have to.

Pros: Router keeps a strong signal and never has dropped a signal yet. This might possibly be the best Linksys router I have used and I have used many . Great speed and Dual N radios and a USB on back for network storage!
Just be sure to upgrade to the latest firmware and youll be set to go!
Cons: Non
Other Thoughts: Running about 8 devices off of this router and havnt had a glitch yet. Hits place sin my basement and all over.

Disappointment

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: works as a 4 port switch & wireless network
Cons: USB port is useless. DO NOT BUY for the purpose of NAS, you will regret it if you do. Linksys has known about the bugs for at least 7 months according to the posts on the forum, but has done nothing to fix them, and it seems recent firmware updates have removed NTFS support. On line tec support implies a 750GB limitation that is not mentioned anywhere in the manuals or sales material.
Other Thoughts: I bought two of these nearly a year ago with the intent of using the NAS capability. To that purpose I bought a usb hard drive yesterday. The WRT610 did not recognize the hard drive. I updated the firmware, and it still did not recognize the hard drive. I stuck in a recent USB Thumb drive, this also was not recognized. I stuck in a very old USB memory card reader with a 16 MB card in it, this was recognized, so I dug out an old USB enclosure and stuck a 160GB hard drive in it. I was able to format the drive using the WRT610N in FAT32 and transfer files to and from it a 5 MB/sec. FAT32 is no good since it limits file size to 4 GB, so I moved the drive to my linux computer and reformatted it as NTFS. I also transferred some files to the disk at 49 MB/sec while it was still connected to my computer. When I plugged it back into the WRT610N, while the drive was recognized, the filesystem was not. I tried formatting the drive on a windows 2000 machine with the same results.
