5 out of 5 eggsRuns like a champ

Pros: I know this is old product and discontinued. But I still thought it may be helpful to someone out there to give a long term review of this router.

I've had this thing since it hit the market. If you are not going to flash to DDWRT, then I strongly suggest updating to the latest firmware version. Earlier versions would I have freezing web browsing issue.

I can say with the latest firmware I have had no issues that I've encountered. Its runs Solid. As in, never having to restart it - ever. I stream and download a LOT of videos and files and it never drops, hangs, buffers, etc.

Cons: Range could be a bit better. I would rate it average at best.

No external antennas.

Other Thoughts: Can get hot. I put a pencil underneath the rear of the unit to lift it up a bit, helps give it more breathing room.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked Great for about 6 months

Pros: WPS could be disabled (where it couldn't be cracked even with pin)
Usual linksys/cisco web interface
came as advertised

Cons: WPS being availiable.
Considerably less durable/reliable then older network hardware.
-power flickered 6 months later and cmos seemed to clear
no longer has dhcp service or working web admin.

1 out of 5 eggsOnly lasted long enough to cover warranty

Pros: Tons of features and options for you to customize. Fairly straightforward interface, especially if you are used to linksys devices. Worked well while it was functioning.

Cons: Had lots of problems connecting my Playstation 3 wirelessly. I couldn't figure out if it was the Playstation or the router; ended up being settings in the router. Owned the router for 1 year and 8 days before it gave up and died. Warranty exceeded, now I'm out the purchase price. Not my favorite $180 purchase. Won't be buying another Cisco/Linksys device for a while.

5 out of 5 eggsWow!

Pros: -Dual 5.2 and 2.4Ghz broadcast bands.
-Multi-broadcasts in n, g, and b simultaneously!
-Broadcasts a "guest" access with it's own simple password access and client limit.
-Excellent PnP behavior - worked flawlessly with my DHCP router/modem which didn't have good wireless and so I needed a dedicated wireless router. Didn't have to change any settings, just plugged it in and set up the wireless settings, it did the rest!

Cons: -None! You can even turn the light on the router off if it bothers you (although it's not very bright). It's in the web access panel!

Other Thoughts: I'm incredibly happy with this purchase. I moved to a new place and no longer hand a wired connection to my router as an option. This router is giving me even better access speeds (despite using the same ISP!) over wireless than my old router with an ethernet connection.

Played nice with my D-Link Bridge, set up the bridge with my wireless networks details, and the bridge could PnP perfectly with the wireless router.

I've had exactly 1 connection lost over the past month which occurred the day after the network was set up. The problem corrected itself after a few moments (didn't even have to log in to the bridge or router) and has worked perfectly ever since.

Getting 29Mbps up and 2Mbps down, which is about the max my ISP allows.

I'm about 30' from the router which is 1 room away down a short hallway. The 5.2Ghz band seems to have a relatively short range (I only get 3 out of 5 bars in my room) but that's fine for me. I'm the only one using it and 2.4Ghz has great range.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Disappointing

Pros: High Speed.
Good while it lasts.

Cons: Had this for about a month and then it started randomly disconnecting wireless devices. Very unreliable. Required on adapter to be re-setup twice. Expected much better for the price.

3 out of 5 eggsSo..So.. Review for Version 1 of E4200

Pros: When the router is working, everything is fine

Cons: The Uplink port is flakey. I changed all the CAT5e connected to the interfaces. I loose connection primarily on the Uplink. This happens every single time I move the router to clean underneath it. Linksys has poor customer support for home users. Enterprise is tons better.

Other Thoughts: It's likely that Linksys may have fixed the issue with Version 2.0, but I could not fix the Whitesheets.

1 out of 5 eggsYou No Longer Own Your Router

Pros: None

Cons: <boing boing>
Owners of Cisco/Linksys home routers got a nasty shock this week, when their devices automatically downloaded a new operating system, which locked out device owners. After the update, the only way to reconfigure your router was to create an account on Cisco's "cloud" service, signing up to a service agreement that gives Cisco the right to spy on your Internet use and sell its findings, and also gives them the right to disconnect you (and lock you out of your router) whenever they feel like it.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy if you want a V1

Pros: If you WANT a V2 for cheap buy this item.

Cons: Its not a V1 like I wanted.

Other Thoughts: Newegg has two separate items for the E4200. There is specifically an E4200 and an E4200V2. Don't buy the E4200 thinking it will be a V1 that you can put DDWRT on.
