2 out of 5 eggsWorked great... until it didn't

Pros: - Works with DDWRT/Tomato
- When it worked, provided very good speeds and decent range
- Gigabit router

Cons: - Around the 2 year mark, the 2.4 Ghz band stopped working. What I mean by this is I can set up a wireless network on this band, but nothing can establish a stable connection. Regardless of whether it is a laptop, an iPhone 4S, a wireless bridge, I can connect for a few minutes but the data throughput is poor and then the connection drops after a couple of minutes. Switching back to stock firmware, doing a 30/30/30 reset and redoing the settings from scratch have not helped. I had read this happening with other Linksys models seemingly related to overheating, but I haven't had any issues with this unit running hot. The 5 Ghz band continues to work well, but a lot of items in the household can't operate on the 5 Ghz band, so I'm out of luck. This one is going to the dump and I'm getting a new router.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

Pros: I got this item refurbished so the price was right, very good price.
I had no trouble with installation and software came on a install CD and was very easy to set up. Everything was configured like username and password and are very easy to change if need be through the software. WiFi has a good strong signal and works well. If you misplace the CD you can easily download software from Cisco online. All in all I am very happy to have purchased this item and would recommend it to everyone. Also Newegg is very good for getting your purchase to you fast. I got it in only 2 days, 1 day earlier than expected.

Cons: I have nothing bad to say about the E3000.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Fully Satisfied

Pros: Compact, Internal Antennae, OEM Firmware 1.0.04v6 Easy to Use

Cons: Runs very hot, drops connection multiple times per day

Other Thoughts: I had a super reliable WRT-54 for many year which I gave my daughter when she went to college that never, ever lost signal or gave me trouble so I decided to give this router a try two years ago. Setup was easy but I didn't get any real improvements in range or speed in my two story house. It gets really hot so added tall feet and placed it on a ceramic tile. It still drops signal several times a day. Recently I purchased a Raspberry PI and been streaming videos over my Wifi to my living room TV. When it works it's great but I notice the problem seem to be the router since whenever I lose my video I also loose all other devices like my iphone. I've thought about going with Tomato but don't think that's the answer. My nephew has an ASUS N66 Dark Knight which he loves. After reading reviews of the new Linksys routers like EA6500 I think I'm going to try another brand for the first time when I purchase my next router. Newegg rocks. Router not so much.

5 out of 5 eggsI've had no issues, and the performance has been very good.

Pros: Although my house isn't very friendly to wifi/cell signals, I'm able to use this very well. I stream videos from my computer to my Roku 3, and I'm able to do so over wifi with no issues, even my 18GB Star Wars file.

I have installed Tomato on it, although I never really figured out OpenVPN.

It's a full-featured router, with lots of customization potential, which is exactly what I wanted

Cons: None to speak of.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it.

Pros: I got two with one acting as a router and the other acting as an access point and switch. I have a ranch style house that I ran some data and wanted better wireless coverage. Thedual band wireless and gigabit switch work great for me and the occasional LAN party.

Cons: None really. I bought two and a reasonable cost. Both are refurbished and both have been going strong for over a year.

Other Thoughts: While color serves no purpose, I really do like the shade of blue that these are.

1 out of 5 eggsabsolute garbage

Pros: NOT A ONE

Cons: THE UNIT OVERHEATS, WAS NOT INSTALLED WITH LINKSYS SOFTWARE NEEDED TO FLASH THE OS ON THE ROUTER HAD TOMATO RAF INSTALLED, WOULD NOT STAY ON FOR MORE THE 5 MINUTES. GARBAGE. WAS SUPPOSE TO HAVE A 90 DAY WARRANTY, CONTACTED LINKSYS AND THEY SAID REFURBS HAD NO WARRANTY.

Other Thoughts: THIS IS THE LAST LINKSYS I WILL EVER BUY

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsWorked Great For..... Awhile

Pros: Very decent range, and good options when paired with different firmware. Good deal if it stays working. The low eggs are not for the performance of the router. This thing is a beast when its working. The low eggs are for it going bad and how they handle the RMA, which it isnt, Its a refund!

Cons: If the unit goes bad, which mine did the extended warranty company has you send in the unit and they give you back a voucher for the money you paid on it. Since I paid less than 60 bucks, there is no way I will be able to buy a comparable router for the price. I was expecting a replacement. Not a happy camper!

Other Thoughts: The extended warranty should be clear, that they don't replace the unit if it goes bad. That they send you back your money for what you paid. 60 bucks doesn't by a router of this quality and if I would have known the warranty works this way I would have bought something else!

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Deeks,

We are sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for the feedback. Would you mind sending us the case number given by our Support Team when you contacted them? We'd like to check your issue further.

4 out of 5 eggsNice ripe tomato

Pros: Easy to flash open-source firmware.
USB slot.
Noticeably faster wireless downloads within home network.
Handles multiple devices well.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Networking is not my strong suit, but I was able to get TomatoUSB firmware on here and get my home network set up just by the try-try-again and if in doubt, reboot method. It took a couple days to get everything right, but since then it's been rock solid for about a month. I'd been getting by with a 5-6 year old WRT54G with no complaints from my wireless-only housemates, but I'd noticed it struggling with too many devices. Those issues are gone now, and grabbing files on my PC wirelessly from my Android devices is now faster than USB (granted 2.0, and granted MTP).

I've also had no overheating issues. The unit is noticeably warm when running, but nowhere near alarmingly so.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy - HEAT problems

Pros: Reasonable price, it if worked. Unfortunately, it doesn't.

Cons: This wireless router is a waste of money!!! It heats up and then I have to reboot it, time and time again. I even have it sitting up on 4 blocks to get more air flow under it, but that doesn't resolve the problem. There are MANY complaints on the internet about the heat problems, with the only resolution that I've found, being someone that put a laptop cooler under the router, to keep it cool enough to keep working I refuse to spend $49 on a laptop cooler to fix a KNOWN problem by Linksys. HISTORY: I was having constant problems with what I "thought" was my internet connection. Got with my ISP, and worked with one of their engineers to find out that the internet was working fine, it was the Linksys E3000 router that was failing. DO NOT BUY THIS, it will be a waste of your money, and you'll just have to go buy a different one that works.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi.

We're very sorry to hear that the device heats up quickly. We posted your review in our Community Forums where users can share their tips. A user already replied with some suggestions that you can try.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad at all

Pros: Bought as a backup to my WRT600N running DD-WRT on sale. Tried it out and discovered it allowed much higher throughput to my NAS, so the 600N is now the backup. Eventually loaded the recommended Tomato build which provided an option for jumbo frames. A review on SmallNetBuilder indicates the E3000 doesn't support jumbo frames, but it does in my experience.

Also, unlike the WRT600N, the E3000's print server works out of the box.

Cons: Heat is the major issue, but some feet or a fan fix that. I initially tried to load DD-WRT, but the transfer just kept stalling and failing over and over. Read some reports of others experiencing this. Eventually I took a major risk and loaded Tomato wirelessly which worked, although I don't recommend anyone do so.

Disk transfer via the router's USB port are extremely slow.

Other Thoughts: Decent router for a decent price.
