1 out of 5 eggsWorst Adapter I've Ever Used

Pros: - Price

Cons: - Constantly Drops Connection
- Not Quite Plug-and-Play (forces use of the included disc)
- Installs with Power Management Enabled
- Must be Unplugged/Plugged In at Every Restart

Other Thoughts: I bought this locally on clearance because I needed an adapter and just wanted a cheap one since I'm getting ready to run CAT6 in my house. This adapter is so terrible it is now the single biggest motivation I have to finish running new wires, and I'm leaving reviews everywhere I can think of to tell people to run far away from it. I do have Windows 10 installed (not supported according to Linksys), so I tested it with a Windows 7 laptop (supported according to Linksys). It gave the same awful performance with both. Spend the money on a quality adapter. You'll be glad you did.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi David,

We thank you for the time you spared in reviewing this product. We’re hoping you’d give us a chance to look closely into the challenges that you are experiencing with the adapter.

How far is it from the wireless router? Have you tried relocating your laptop? How about uninstalling and re-installing the adapter? The Windows 10 driver for this adapter is not available for download as of now but the Engineering team is working on it. What’s the driver version installed in the Windows 7 computer?

We’d appreciate to receive your response via email at LinksysCares@linksys.com. In the message, indicate also your full name, phone number, location and the link to this post.

Sincerely,
Linksys Support

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Adapter

Pros: none

Cons: -horrible download speed
-constantly disconnects from the internet
-way overpriced

Other Thoughts: Do not buy this adapter. I have been using it for about 2 years, and have been living with constant connection problems that I thought was due to my wireless signal. I just hooked up a new adapter and it works 100x better. It turns out the adapter was what was making my internet cut out and now I have over double the download speed.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable and slow when it does work.

Pros: Small and compact. Sort of easy to setup.

Cons: This is incredibly slow. I am on 50Mbps in my apartment, using this temporarily until I can get the go ahead to run Cat6 cable through the walls from the leasing center (I am a professional). The only alternative is to run a cable through the hallway, and I don't want to do that, so I decided to make use of this adapter I bought back when I lived in a previous location. It didn't work well at all there and I ended up simply running cable, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt because it was pretty far from the router. In my new apartment it is much closer, so it can no longer be excused.

Every other wireless device gets a decent signal in this room and maintains a reliable connection, but this adapter is just junk. It cuts out every 10-30 minutes (I will be surprised if it lets me write this without cutting out) and when it does work, it seems to max out around 4 or 5 Mbps. Note that when I say it's "cutting out" I don't mean the signal-- according to Windows, I am getting a full 5 bars of signal-- I mean the internet connection drops down to "Limited" and I am unable to do anything online. Typically unplugging it and plugging it back in (or enabling/disabling the device in Device Manager) will bring it back up, or it may come back on its own after long enough, but this is pretty unacceptable for anyone who wants to use their internet connection for gaming or streaming.

Also, one more thing to be aware of: after you take it out and switch back to an ethernet connection, it can cause some problems until you manually remove the device in device manager. My previous job in my previous location relied on having a dependable internet connection, which is why I switched out the adapter for an ethernet cable. After doing this, I was left with some technical difficulties that made it difficult to do work until I finally tried uninstalling the adapter in device manager and completely removing all related drivers and software, which fixed it.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsDecent for low bandwidth needs

Pros: During the course of normal internet usage, it does what it is supposed to do and does it reliably.

Cons: This adapter is prone to overheating. I have a 60 mbps internet connection, and when I'm downloading a game I'll sustain speeds of between 6 and 7 megabytes a second. The adapter will handle it for 5 or 10 minutes and then all of a sudden my internet will die on my PC. When I unplug the adapter it feels extremely warm to the touch. I let it cool for 2-3 minutes before plugging it back in to rinse and repeat the process 1 or 2 more times.

Other Thoughts: Overall, decent if you don't need a large amount of bandwidth. I've never had an issue while playing games or watching videos.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsPretty awful.

Pros: It "works", in that it will connect you to the internet if there's an available WiFi connection.

Cons: It's basically a handicapped version of a full-fledged WiFi adapter. I'm not at all far away from my router, but it's far enough away that an ethernet cable would just look unsightly, and my connection has always been spotty, at best. I've been using this thing for the better part of two years because I had assumed it was my (Cisco!) router, not the adapter. Well, I was wrong. With the adapter, I, at best, get 20 Mb/s down and 1 Mb/s up. Directly connected to the router/modem, My speeds are roughly 80 Mb/s down and 10 Mb/s up.

What really prompted me to write this review is that this adapter's just gotten worse over time. That's not a huge surprise for any piece of hardware, but I've only had it for so long. Lately, my speeds are only 8 Mb/s down and people cut out constantly in VoIP programs.

Other Thoughts: You can get the 6205 from Intel for half the price. It's a PCI card so it's less convenient than a USB adapter, but it has tons of positive reviews. Hopefully it's better than this piece of garbage.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy if you have windows 8

Pros: None, since it is basically dial up speed if you're trying to get the drivers to work with windows 8.

Cons: It simply doesn't work and a waste of money. I know a lot about computer and have tried several solutions such as compatibility, downloading the latest drivers from the site. It just doesn't support windows 8 period.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi,

Thank you for writing a detailed feedback regarding your experience with our product. We have posted your concern in our Community Forum and one of our users explained the reasons why our wireless adapter didn't work with Windows 8.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks fine, for awhile

Pros: When it works, it works great.

Cons: No matter which USB port was used, it constantly would stop responding and would require unplugging it and plugging it back in before it worked again. Disabling/Re-enabling within windows would do nothing, same with rebooting.

Other Thoughts: WIndows 7 Pro 64bit with all updates.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsNoticeably Faster Speed!!

Pros: I bought this adapter too use with a wireless DSL router. I'm using the special router the phone company provided. I didn't use the drivers on the CD, as it a given, and most likly won't work.. I installed the driver manually as I have always done. It works, quite well for my needs. I went from a (B) to an (N) adapter. My speed is almost as fast as the main computer, that's connected to the router. I went from 10-mbps to 120-mbps. A nice boost in speed indeed!!

Cons: It's a shame there's not an USB F\M extension cord included with most adapters. There should be, but luckly I had one on hand.

Other Thoughts: The review, three back from mine, is corrent. I've also used TCP Optimizer, past and present, and it dose work. It will incress the speed of your wireless adapter.
