1 out of 5 eggsBetter paper weight than anything

This review is from: Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router

Pros: Price

Cons: Slow, choppy, lack of stability.

Other Thoughts: While paying for 30MB internet, my max speeds with this router is 3MB. It constantly needs reset and unplugged. Don't bother with putting a penny towards this. Linksys went to garbage after the WRT54G. For whatever reason the cool thing is to look modern, and slim.. the bad news with that is quality went out of the window.

With this router I use another linksys device (AE2500) which quoting linksys' website

• High speed up to 300 Mbps
• Optimized for streaming video & gaming

Neither of those things apply.

My set up for reference:
AMD FX-8320 EIGHT-CORE 3.5GHZ 16MB 125W AM3+CPU
Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P AM3+ ATX MB
MSI AMD RADEON R7 240 2GD3 LP PCIE 3.0
Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB 1600 CL11
SolidGear 650W PS2 ATX Power Supply

4 out of 5 eggsVery decent price/performance ratio

This review is from: Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router

Pros: Plug and play.
BROADCOM chipset @ 300mhz is very snappy.
very good signal strength up to 175 ft range.
can be flashed with 3rd party firmware.
case is well ventilated.
My unit never required a reboot.

Cons: zero signal beyond 125 ft.
limited configuration choices in stock firmware.
3rd party firmware is limited to "mini" version, not much more in the way of functionality can be gained by that.
No vpn.
Limited logging.

Other Thoughts: For the price, this has to be considered an outstanding product. I think that it is a great choice for sending with a kid going to college, or for your non-techie friends who have no idea what could make a router worth $200 and just want wireless.

My numbers through netstress were in line with other n300 devices I've tested. But numbers don't mean anything to anyone but me, since everyone has different hardware, structural issues, and usage requirements, so I can offer you my acid tests - watching video over wireless:
I tested vudu and the "south american river" VOD services, and had throughput at 15mbps during the buffer stages. No drops, pauses, or reduced quality instances.
Watching a 17gb MKV rip was flawless; streaming rate remained at 7mbps or above throughout.

3 systems and 3 phones did not at any time overload wireless, and outside-in connections via remote desktop were snappy and stable.

I think this unit should be preferred hands down, 100% of the time over units from tenda, tp-link, on-networks, or any other label AT THIS PRICE POINT. It is a very good deal, and is certainly worth the price.

I docked one egg because the unit has no external antennae.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product would recommend

This review is from: Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router

Pros: I know this is sortof pointless unless you are constantly transferring files in your LAN, or if you somehow have insane broadband speeds, but otherwise it works great. Haven't had any issues thus far, get strong signal throughout the house.

Cons: None I can think of

1 out of 5 eggsDefective

This review is from: Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router

Pros: It worked great.. when it worked.

Cons: It worked for a little over a month and then stopped. I tried firmware updates and hard resets, nothing worked. It can't even ping anything on the Internet. Linksys support wasted my time for about an hour and then said it the router wasn't under warranty (only had it for a month, so I guess the warranty is less than that). Then they hung up on me.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks like it should

This review is from: Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router

Pros: It hasn't given me any issues, it just works and its easy to configure port forwarding and other options.

Cons: Can't/Don't get 300Mbps connections even though its a N300 router, max I get is 144Mbps. No way to force N300 mode either.

Other Thoughts: The first thing I did when I got it was update the firmware and disabled Wifi Protected Setup. After the reaver hack was discovered, WPS is liability. I occasionally reboot the router, I don't think it needs it but it doesn't do any harm either. I knocked it down an egg for the con, if it says it on the box..I should be able to get that speed.

1 out of 5 eggsCheap

This review is from: Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router

Pros: It was running great for a month

Cons: Only a month later it takes forever lo load pages if you can load them at all. I'm sitting 7 feet way from it. When I connect directly o the modem everything is fine. Upgrading the firmware or resetting to factory defaults had no effect.

Other Thoughts: I'm surprised Cisco put their name on products like this

2 out of 5 eggsNot a good deal

This review is from: Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router

Pros: Has lots of options and a good range for a smaller space.

Cons: I have to reset it daily. I have tried firmware upgrading and changing various setting but this router just stops working almost daily even with no traffic going through it. It is in a well ventilated place and is never hot when I touch it so overheating isn't the issue. I'm wishing I would have went with something else....I use it for both wired and wireless connection. Our Xbox is connected to it via cat5 as well as two pcs...only a few devices use the wireless. When my kids want to boot their computers or Xbox to get online to play games we have to reset the router. When it is working it works good though and oddly enough never seems to stop working ones it's being used.

Other Thoughts: I think next time I'm going with something more expensive and designed better. I don't think I like the internal antenna design.

3 out of 5 eggsPoor performance

This review is from: Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router

Pros: VPN support, DD-WRT compatible

Cons: Slow speeds

Other Thoughts: I bought this router to replace a D-Link comcast wireless router that for whatever reason just would not connect to my work VPN after I reset it. This router connects fine, but within a day my housemates were complaining of slow speeds and that pages took forever to load. On my end even torrents took a really long time to start.

I kept it around a while longer because I need VPN support at work, but they finally got fed up and asked me to check out the settings. I googled and this seems to be a very common problem (with comcast at least) but nothing I did fixed it.

I even installed DD-WRT hoping that would be easier to manage but it's still really slow.

You get what you pay for it.

Manufacturer Response:
