4 out of 5 eggsit works and easy to manuall setup

Pros: So plug in connect via wireless give new password , set up for using existing wireless sid, set ip address in base router if you wish and done. No need for the crapware install on CD. Seems ok gives me my intended speed two other half of house that the base wireless router didn't cover full strength. This isn't HIGH END just home use I think but work just great for allowing streaming of movies to other side of house.

Cons: could be better

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent signal and an easy setup

Pros: Nice looking device right out of the box. It’s designed to be plugged directly into an outlet or the included power cable can be used and the device can be set on a desk. When plugged directly into the wall, the device does not interfere with the second outlet on the receptacle. Setup using the enclosed CD was straight forward and only took a few minutes. Once connected to your network, you can unplug the device and carry it anywhere around the house to extend your wireless network. I’ve always had issues getting a decent signal on my front porch. I have a double masonry house and my networking equipment is in the basement causing additional signal propagation issues.

After setup, I plugged this device into an outlet in my living room on the outside wall. Much to my surprise, I was now able to get a full signal on my front porch. I also carried this outback on my patio, plugged it into an outside receptacle and was able to significantly extend my network to encapsulate my entire yard.

I was pleasantly surprised with the signal strength of the RE2000 despite its lack of an external antenna.

The device has been up and running for about a month without any issues at all.

Cons: The documentation is terrible. The user manual is about 100 pages and there is no included “Quick Start” guide. With such a simple setup procedure that will suffice for 99% of the population, the only documentation is in the form of a full manual on CD. I’m totally confused why they didn’t include a small pamphlet in the box outlining a typical setup.

Other Thoughts: All in all, it’s a nice device. Quick to setup, portable with a great range and signal propagation.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Basic Extender

Pros: -Beautiful Aesthetical Appearance (Sleek, not too Large, nice LED Tint, Ethernet ports at the bottom)
- Functional AC Connector (Option to plug straight into wall or use an adapter to extend it off from the socket via power cord)
-Dual Ethernet Ports (Version 2 Only)
-Decent Transfer Rates & Range

I use this on a Tech bench in my basement (router is on ground floor) and having 2 ethernet points in version 2 of this is very useful. I can have my main tech bench PC online always and then having a PC im building/repairing hooked up for driver/update downloading with this and it is very efficient.

Cons: -Setup Requires use of their software to setup (Other extender brands simple have you to hook up the ethernet to your pc and just open an internet browser window to start configuration, however with this you NEED to put in the CD and run the setup wizard.

Since it is only N600 (300 mbps per band) the speed is only decent, it's almost the lowest grade and the range is going to be only decent as well. I have a smaller home so it isn't an issue and it isn't too far from my router either. My router is AC1750 so I can only tap into a fraction of that speed with this however it is just good enough for techbench use for updates/driver downloads.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this to the average-moderate consumer, I would not recommend this to people doing a lot of very large downloads as this product is not rated to perform at that standard. It will do it just not at the speed you would want it to perform. I would also state that if you have a larger home that you might want to look at N900 or an AC Device to use as an extender.

Pros: Can be used for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands, though not concurrently. Can be used as wallplug mountable or desktop mountable by using included cord.

Can be set up with or without software (see cons). Item I received had the latest 2.0 revision firmware.

Extends wireless range, and can be used with included Cat 5 cable to connect a device by wired connection at the same time. Led light lets you know whether or not you are connected.

Easier to set up without using the setup disc if you are an advanced user.

Size is bigger than most range extenders, but this being a dual band unit with dual antennas, that is to be expected so no one should really complain about that. You have to put the antennas somewhere.

WPS button on the unit if you need it for setup, but I don't recommend it for security sake. It's easy to setup without it.

After being up for over a week, the unit has caused no problems on my network, and it extends my 5Ghz band well outside my patio area for easy Netflix streaming or streaming from my NAS server. I am thoroughly impressed as this has been the best range extender I have tried so far.

Cons: Biggest gripe I have is the suggested selling price. This is more than most dual band routers. Maybe about half of it's normal selling price would be a good starting point.

Can only be used for one band at a time, not both concurrently. Would be nice if it worked for both at once since it has both band antennas internally.

Included setup disc seems to work ok with Windows 7 64 bit, but not so well with Windows 8 for some reason. This is something Linksys may need to look into really quick.

Included documentation with the unit is totally inadequate forcing the end buyer to visit the website and download a manual in .pdf form if needed. Totally unacceptable for something in this price range. Honestly, this little quick start guides are totally useless to a novice networker.

Other Thoughts: I can honestly say I am surprised at how good this Linksys RE2000 has worked so far. The power consumption is within reason according to my Kill A Watt meter, and the signal strength on my 5Ghz band is definitely stronger with no lag or drop in bandwidth with more than one device downloading simultaneously.

I decided not to use the setup disc after making sure it worked on Windows 7, but instead just used the IP address to do a manual setup with "admin" as the password, locked onto the SSID I wanted to extend, entered that SSID's password, did a save, and when the unit rebooted moved it to it's new location. Under five minutes total.

I have not run into any system lockups so far, nor has the use of the Linksys RE2000 affected any of the wireless components on my network.

The RE2000's price along with the install disc that may or may not work are my two biggest gripes with the extender. I think Linksys could do a little better in both regards.

The extender does work though, and works very well so far, better than any other that I've tried, and for that I am going to give it a solid 4 egg rating. Definitely a piece of hardware I would recommend for someone needing a little extra range on their wireless, and definitely if it can be bought on sale reasonably.

Disclaimer: I am not an employee of NewEgg, nor of Linksys. I am provided these items by NewEgg and the manufacturers to review to the best of my ability, utilizing my years in custom computer building and custom networking. I make no claims as to how they will function for anyone, just how they work during my testing.

4 out of 5 eggsEasy to setup and well designed

Pros: This range extender is available in two hardware versions: 1.0 and 2.0. This review is for version 2.0. Simplistic design with 2 mounting options: it can be plugged into free outlet or connected to outlet by means of included power cord. When plugging in directly into dual outlet, this router does not obstruct second outlet. Included accessories are optional power cord, Ethernet cord and Software/Manual CD. Router shipped with up-to-date firmware, version 2.0.00.

Cons: Included on CD software is not compatible with current Mac OS 10.9.2. At the time of writing (March 2014) there were no compatible Mac OS Setup software available, even from support section of Linksys website.

Other Thoughts: User Manual on CD is multi language PDF file and you’ll have to scroll to page 94 to read it in English.

Attention: RE2000 has 3 ports open: 80 (used for administration), 49152 (this returns 404) and 5xxxx (this exposes extender’s identity: manufacturer's name, model number, serial number; also this changes after each reboot) - this might be an security issue for some.

Unable to use provided software, I found a way to setup this extender in different way. Following steps were taken:

1. Connect to WiFi network created by this extender, named LinksysExtender

2. After success connection go to address and login with blank username and password “admin”

3. Click on “Wireless” tab and extender will perform survey of available WiFi network automatically

4. From list choose network that needs to be extended, and if it is secured network you will be prompted to enter password

5. Allow extender to finish configuration, place it halfway between your primary router and site where extended WiFi is required

4 out of 5 eggsA nice surprise!

Pros: This extender works well. It does what it is advertised to do. It is surprisingly easy to setup, if you read and follow the directions. The option of plugging it directly into the electrical outlet is very handy. You could plug it into an outlet in the carport, garage, or outbuilding without worrying about mounting it or finding something to put it on. The added benefit of two ethernet ports was a nice touch. I am getting double duty out of this extender by using it to boost my WIFI signal to the yard and garden area and also by connecting a desktop to the ethernet port on the extender. I was able to do away with a long cat 5 cable temporarily connected an older machine with 10/100 ethernet. Using the extender to connect it to the network actually increased the performance. War Thunder has much lower ping times using the extender than it did on the direct connection.

Cons: Documentation! There is inadequate documentation in the box. I strongly suggest going to the manufacturer's support page and download the manual. Opening it in a pdf. reader will make it easier to find the English version.

Other Thoughts: If you follow the instructions it is very easy to setup. It is not necessary to log into the extender
for a simple setup. You may want to when finding the best place to put it. If you log into the extender using your browser, by clicking on “Status” then WLAN statistics, you will find the familiar bar charts
that will show signal strength and quality. This is helpful in finding a good location for your extender. You will have to refresh the page to get a new reading. You can use the included disk if you have a cd/dvd drive, or download the utility disk from the Lynksis support page. You can install it using a wired ethernet connection or through WIFI. If you need to extend your WIFI signal or simply need to add WIFI to a device, take a serious look at this product.

1 out of 5 eggsEffort in frustration...

Pros: • Includes options for power attachment (directly into the wall socket, or via an included cable)
• Nice looking unit that blends in well when installed in just about any room (when plugged directly into a wall socket)
• Small enough to not attract too much attention when plugged in with the included cable (for those that have housemates who don’t appreciate “seeing” your network gear)
• Designed to be setup in a multitude of ways (standard IP setup via a browser page, the included install disc, hard wire connection via Ethernet, or through simple WPS)
• Linksys site is easy to use, and well-designed
• Clean, minimalist packaging

Cons: • Setup was the ultimate mission in frustration – none of the above listed methods worked; setup was never able to “find” the RE2000 on the network...started to think unit was DOA
• All attempts to reset the RE2000 generated no forward progress in the installation process…is it DOA…
• …until I held the reset button in for 30 seconds – while POWERED ON
• Device drops the connection intermittently
• 4/5 usage attempts killed the Wi-Fi in our house (unplugged RE2000 – Wi-Fi service was restored EVERY TIME)
• The one time our network didn't get taken down, and I was actually able to run some benchmarks, netted unimpressive results
• Runs surprisingly warm
• Manual is just a leaflet containing no useful information (mentioned many times on this review page – it’s true)

Start other thoughts:

I like to treat these installs as though I am just your average user – a guy with zero IT background, who has the ability to read simple directions. For a consumer product, that should be enough just about every time. I was also looking forward to comparing its range with our current extender – the D-Link DAP 1320. The D-Link is about a 1/5th the size, with the same ability to be plugged into a typical wall outlet.

I happen to have a wireless NIC on my main gaming PC, so I enabled it, then connected a USB DVD drive (minor gripe on the need for a disc, as a lot of people are easily intimidated at the prospect of going to a download page). It all started simply enough, couple of button clicks…but setup was never able to find the RE2000. Received a message saying that “device setup was not successful, please try again, or enlist tech support”. Went ahead and unplugged it from the wall, hit the reset button, tried again – same negative results. Rinse and repeat trying from a laptop, using the WPS feature, and from the downloaded executable from the Linksys site. All of this was happening with the RE2000 three feet away from the router.

Other Thoughts: I connected it via Ethernet to a PC, then went with the default Linksys login info (average consumer would have had to scour the internet for that info, as it wasn’t included in the “manual”. Bingo – RE2000 has been located. Set it up manually, rebooted the device…no longer on the network. Even better? Our router’s SSID changed back to its default, and acted as though it had never been setup. I found this out when my wife lost her connection. Very weird. Set our router back up, and started putting the RE2000 back in its box, but then I decided to try one more thing. I plugged it back in, stuck a needle in the reset slot, and held it there for about 30 seconds. The LED started blinking – as though the reset was actually working this time. Tried the setup again (with the DLed executable) – and it worked perfectly. This was almost two hours after I started.

I figured I would start benching with a simple mobile bandwidth tester (Ookla), and then try some Steam downloads, a little Netflix streaming, etc. I made it through the bandwidth testing – and that was it. After roughly 10 minutes of being online, we lost Wi-Fi access on all devices (2 phones/2 laptops/1 iPad Mini). I unplugged the RE2000, and Wi-Fi was back up in less than 30 seconds. I went ahead and started testing bandwidth while I still had a connection. We have a Comcast 50MB/12MB package. I pulled about 31Mbps in our living room – same speed before the RE2000 was installed. As I backed further away from the RE2000, the speeds got slower and slower. By the time I hit our front porch – the tests stalled out. I think this had more to do with its effect on our overall network, as I can normally benchmark just fine into our front yard. Our Asus NT-R65U gives us usable signal strength into our backyard. Surprise – the RE2000 didn’t change that range at all. Okay, let’s wrap this up…

Maddeningly frustrating setup, no speed/range increase, takes the network down almost every time it’s powered up (I was hearing about it from my wife – lol), more than twice the cost of a comparable unit (that actually works), and the mysterious hiccup where our router was somehow set back to factory defaults (okay…) = NO THANK YOU. Cannot recommend the RE2000 at all.

I went ahead and read the 27 (at the time I tested) Newegg reviews, and it was pretty split down the middle. It was both nice and effective – or it was a waste of time. With so many consumer choices out there, nobody in their right mind would spend as much time fighting with this like I did. They would simply return it for something else. If they took the time to read reviews before their purchase, I think it’s safe to say that they would look elsewhere for their next range extender purchase. I advise you to do the same.

4 out of 5 eggsit helps a lot

Pros: This device does exactly what it says it does.First of I like that you can plug it in to a wall or it comes with a cord so you can put on a table, desk,or a dresser for example. Although I could not find anywhere on the box or in the setup instructions how far it extends the range, it did extend it a decent amount about 50 or so feet from the extender. Simply place it between the router and the device and it you will get a stronger signal from your router. I have a desktop in my bedroom, we're using as a home theatre pc and I got a better signal. I would definitely recommend to some who has trouble getting wifi upstairs or a long shotgun type home or mobile home...etc. The unit comes with an eithernet cord (black too),2 switchable plates to hook into the wall or by cord, and the cord...nice packaging too. I think this thing comes in real handy with wifi 5.0 which is a better signal for wifi but doesn't go as far...which is where this bad boy comes in handy

Cons: this device only extends the signal it receives. so if you place the extender 30 feet away and it only receives 2.0 mbps. you can go about 30 feet further but it will still only be 2.0. it does not strengthen the signal in anyway and in most cases it will be a mbps or 2 slower. On another subject, they're are picture setup instructions but no instructions for it the unit itself at all...I thought we'll there will be some on the disk...nope, the disk simply sets up the unit detects the router I checked the Linksys site and there you can download a pdf. of the users guide. I miss the old days when you got one in the box

Other Thoughts: as far as extending your routers wifi signal, both 2.4 and 5.0 it does a good job but if you are looking for a massive range or signal strength you might want to invest in a good router to work in combination with the range extender...because like I said it only extends the signal it receives. so if your signal is weak its probably not the range extenders fault it may be the placement of the unit or your routers signal strength
