4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Overall it was a good performer for both wired and wireless communications. Reasonably good distance through walls inside the house. I really liked the user friendliness and features of the configuration web page.

Cons: Runs fairly warm since it's always on. Died before its 2nd birthday, possibly due to the warmth. In hindsight, it needed a mini fan always blowing on it. It sat out in the open on a desk. I was initially leery of the web UI for configuration. That really did work against me when it was starting to die since I couldn't get out to the web and couldn't get the local web UI to work independently from the web.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: I have had this device for about a month.

Cons: It locks up the LAN ports

Other Thoughts: It locks up the LAN ports and the only solution is a cold boot, about 1 per week. I have had 3 instances to call tech support, and the last was to down-load the FW. It took a few hours to recover and get it working again. When it decides to work it does a good job, but, I would class it as unreliable. The last instance the recommendation was to return it, so I'll be replacing it with an ASUS RT-N66U, it is a bit more pricey, but, worth it. Linksys, when privately held produced excellent equipment, but CISCO has put that aside.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Dale,

We're sorry to learn about your experience with the unit but we're glad that you took the time to write this review and let us know about it. We wish that we were able to get the chance to help you check the unit out. Since you've had it replaced already, we can just wish that you'll give our devices a try again and we hope that we'll get the chance to work with you in the future. Should you have other feedback to share, email us at along with your contact details and the link to this post.

We'll be happy to hear from you.

5 out of 5 eggsLinksys EA4500-NP

Pros: Works great and much faster than the old Linksys it replaced. Great web interface and easy to setup.

Cons: Don't like the 'automated' walk through easy setup. Had to look up the default admin password to setup manually. User guide does not want you to do it that way for some reason.

Other Thoughts: Good price and enough speed wired/wireless to not be the bottleneck of your network for some time.

5 out of 5 eggsIncredibly easy set up

Pros: -Set up was a breeze, took no more than 15 minutes.
-Does not require to name SSID/password.
-Simple and basic.
-It auto downloads the latest software.
-It connects automatically.
-Easy disabling the GUESS feature.
-Smart app, easy to view what is connected to your router.
-Powerful signal and 5GHz is great and fast download.
-Setting account was fast and easy.
-Linksys software easy to use and comprehend.
-Parental control feature. Great for parents with children.
-External storage connected to the router for easy access on the network.
-Prioritize devices feature.
-Can set Static IP.
-Built in Firewall.

Cons: No Cons that I can see.

Seriously? You can complain for this b/g/n router for not being AC.......not me. I specifically saw that it say b/g/n, so no I will not give it a con or 4 star because of it.

Other Thoughts: Setting up the router was very easy. I have a Verizon modem/router, hooking the Linksys routher to the Verizon router (port 1) was easy and downloading the latest software connectivity was very easy.
The thing is that if you don't have an account with Linksys, you have to make one, after that and the set up creating an icon on your desktop to control the router is painless from there forward, the name and password are easily viewed on the Linksys software so you can start connecting whatever devices you need to be connected.

One thing that was great was that aside from connecting your main devices to the router using the SSID/Password, you can also connect a GUESS with its own different password and it was an easier password than the one from the SSID/Password. In my case I've decided to turn off that feature and just leave the main SSID/Password.

Another feature that it's a bit useful was the app I downloaded for the router, you can set some of those features from the phone, such as Parental controls, external device, media prioritization, and see what devices are connected to the router. Also, activate/deactivate the GUESS feature.

When I had cable internet, all of my hardware was from Linksys, I never had an issue with them, routers, modems, they always were easy to set up.

I've tested this router in other two different set up, one using a Cable modem and the router worked the same as in my house using the Verizon modem/router, and same case scenario, the router was set up as being 1st and then 2nd and not a single problem.

Downloading. Generally youtube on the weekends is very slow, can hardly view any 1080P videos, but with this router, this weekend (Dec. 20-21st) was the first time that I was able to view 1080P videos without getting that annoying message from youtube "Troubleshoot playing videos on your computer". I was able to watch many clips on my 47" TV w/o any issues. My Verizon modem/router is useless now, most of my devices are on the Linksys router.

I have a high regard for Linksys products, they're easy to use and as always, the set up process is a breeze, no need to manually set anything, everything is set up for you and no need to change it after you've set up the router, I didn't have to nor I will. By far the best router I've ever use and it's very fast and reliable.

1 out of 5 eggsWill not work as a Bridge with another EA 4500

Pros: I have bought Linksys product since 1997 and have loved them for the most part. Any reasonable IT person like me would conclude that it should work off the shelf and talk to its relative with ease. This is not the case. When Cisco sold Linksys to Belkin, things change. Support is not up to snuff. Who wants to speak with someone from the Phillipines?

Cons: Will not communicate well with the other Router in Bridge mode.

Other Thoughts: I will be forced to look for another solution from another company. Nothing is easy and never take anything for granted. I am burying the hours spent trying to solve this problem with this informative review. I made the cardinal sin by not checking out the reviews. I hope not to make that mistake again.

5 out of 5 eggsCan't get any easier.

Pros: Linksys has yet to fail me on packaging, everything sat nice and tight inside the box. Looks professional and of quality.

I took off my old router and plugged this one in and then reset both router/cable box. After everything powered back on I was able to connect and configure the router to my settings. I cannot stress how easy it is to set up Linksys routers with there built in app. It's a simple 1,2,3 step process and anyone can set up this router without an issue.

Smart Wi-Fi is a must after you get to own one of these routers. Be able to control who is on your network, control what is available to the users. You can even prioritize a computer to give it maximum performance gains such as when gaming or streaming media.

The linksys ip address webpage to setup and configure your settings couldn't get any easier than this. I would highly recommend this router to anyone who wants a headache free setup and a router that gives power to the owner.

Cons: I couldn't get a few of my USB sticks to be recognized through the USB ports in the back of this router but did manage to get one to work. After that I did have issue with trying to stream the video I had on the USB to another computer. Setting up folders is somewhat confusing in the linksys ip webpage but I did manage to configure it and it has been working flawlessly.

This was not worth a deduction!

Other Thoughts: This router will not increase your internet speed UNLESS it is truly your router that is bottle necking your speed. (For EX, older B/G routers)

My router is about 40-50 foot away from me with a wall in between and I have yet to see signal drop or lag spikes. I do tons of gaming and uploading on youtube and have my computer prioritized for more performance from the router and so far I am liking this feature quite a bit.

This router does have two USB ports on the back, one of my favorites about that is one of them is actually a USB 3.0, that is simply icing on the cake.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent simple and fast router with many features

Pros: This router setup could not be easier. It does require that you load the software to be able to use the router but the software is straight forward and the whole setup took less than 5 minutes. It was great to see that right out of the box, the software was installed and worked so easily. I have had nightmares working with routers in the past which took much grief to get working correctly but not with this router.

Next, the features on this router are outstanding. Let me explain why a cloud based router would be a perfect solution. If you need someone to help you with router settings, then the cloud based setup is perfect. For anyone with family that isn't technologically inclined, this is a welcome feature.

A feature that most people would never consider changing is QoS (quality of service) which would let you give more bandwidth to your video streaming TV and less to other devices so that that you can enjoy smooth video playback without having another device spike the bandwidth. This is just an example and this router makes this service as easy as dragging and dropping devices to prioritize them. This feature is outstanding!

This router has Dual Band 450+450Mbps, Network modes of Mixed, N, B, or G, and security modes of WEP, WAP Personal, WAP Enterprise, WAP2 Personal, WAP2 Enterprise, WAP2/WAP Mixed Personal, and WAP2/WAP Mixed Enterprise. Lots of security options with this router!

USB setup was easy and I found no issues with it. After mapping it, I was able to view all my folders and files on my WD passport 1.5T drive across the whole network including my Samsung Smart TV.

Tech support is fast and great. I contacted them on 2 separate occasions and they were very knowledgeable and it is 24/7 so you will have peace of mind knowing there is help if anything should go wrong.

The guest account lets you have up to 50 connections. I was able to connect 3 devices with no issues to the guest account with full bandwidth that my ISP provides (15 Mbps).

Cons: I am still working with this router to find any major issues. Some minor issues were that I could not get WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) to work so far. I already set up my printer with USB before doing this so I do not believe it is the routers fault. I can get the access code from my printer, but when adding this to the router, it does not find it. I will eventually get this to work and I really believe it is because I already have set up the printer by USB.

There is no way to wall mount this router which I would like to do. This is not a deal breaker, but it would be nice to have this option.

Other Thoughts: This router preformed well and exceeded my expectations. The features of this router are top notch and being able to change settings on the cloud is a very welcome feature to me. The setup couldn't be easier and to be able to drag and drop items of importance into a QoS environment makes this router one of the most simple but effective routers on the market.

5 out of 5 eggsN900 is the way to go for lots of devices

Pros: - N900 supports multiple devices no problem.
- Transmit range is excellent
- NAT works flawlessly
- Port forwarding and configuration is fine
- Extremely fast

Cons: - Web UI is slow
- Mobile configuration app is lacking
- "Apps" are fairly useless

Other Thoughts: I really liked this router. If you aren't really up to speed with all the N150/N900 lingo, N900 basically means that there are 3 transmit and 3 reception antennas in the router, combined with a transmit/rx speed of 450MB/s (450 + 450 = 900).

N900 also is capable of 5Ghz transmissions. The 5Ghz spectrum has a shorter range than the 2.4Ghz but it much less congested, meaning if you live in an apartment or dorm then this router will perform much better than a standard router which will be overloaded with all the other traffic on the 2.4Ghz spectrum (channel 6,11 etc). 2.4Ghz is also inherently overloaded from wireless phones, microwaves, all that stuff.

I consistently got maximum transmission speeds through my iPhone running ookla speed tests, and in an 1100Sqft area I never had any signal loss on the 5Ghz spectrum. My roommate had no problems on his older phone in the 2.4Ghz spectrum. At one point we had about 10 devices running with no slowdown of any sort.

The EA4500 looks great if you care about aesthetics. It's sleek, has a low profile for wall mounting, and matches most decor. It's a nice sight for sore eyes from someone who has been using a soda can looking router from DLink for the past few months.

The main problem with this router is the firmware. It's clunky, it sucks, and unless you have a keen eye and figure out how to get around the cloud setup it requires a constant internet connection to even sign in. I can't believe how long it takes to open the web UI, and changing pages inside of it is slow also. There are "apps" that you can buy for it which add things like parental controls (which are mostly built in anyways), but the selection is extremely limited and would probably just slow down the already slow UI.

After initial setup you usually don't need to worry about the web UI, so I don't really think it is worth docking points for due to the extreme performance of the router in general.

High recommended for homes and businesses alike.
