1 out of 5 eggsEhhh...

Pros: Looks pretty.

Cons: Appears to be defective. Replaced older Linksys (Cisco) SD2008 switch. This new Linksys (Belkin) LGS108 switch won't allow devices behind it to pick up IP address from DHCP server. Intermittent connectivity when using static IP's. Put the old switch back in place and everything is fine again.

3 out of 5 eggsBack to Gigabit Speeds

Pros: Decent design. LinkSys has been reliable in the past.

Cons: Lack of documentation explaining functionality.

Other Thoughts: I've resolved my prior problem with it only transferring data at 100 megabit. This is all based on assumption, since they lack any useful documentation to explain things. I assume that the switch did not think the network line was of good enough quality for gigabit, so it only transferred at 100 megabit.

The old line between modem and switch was an old 50 foot Cat 5E. Should be sufficient, but there was really nothing else I could point a finger at. Running under this assumption, I ran brand new Cat 6 through my walls, replacing the old 5E. I put ends on myself, which allowed me to shorten the run to more like 35 feet, without a coil of extra length at the end. After doing this, I started getting the full gigabit speeds through the switch.

I'm leaving a low review, because here is one time where there would actually be a useful documentation item or support topic on their website. Something that says it will downgrade the speed if it doesn't think the line quality is good enough. Sadly, such topic is nowhere to be found, which makes it look like their product just doesn't work right. And maybe it doesn't. I don't really know. Technically, the 5E at 50 feet should have been sufficient.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi, Scott A.,

We value your feedback about the LGS108 switch. The LGS108 is not a manageable type of switch which has 8 Gigabit Ethernet auto-sensing ports, and can detect different LAN adapter card speeds (10/100/1000Mbps). It doesn’t have enough documentation in explaining its functionality because it is a pass-through device or an easy Plug and Play device. The maximum Ethernet cable length in connecting devices is 100 meters (328feet). Cat5e and Cat6 cables supports 1000Mbps (1Gbps) LAN speed. If your 50ft Cat5e cable, which is used to be connected to the LGS108, and your computer(with Gigabit speed LAN Card) was only giving you 100Mbps, then there might be a possibility of lose connection on either the LAN port of the LGS108 or on the LAN port of your computer, or either ends of the RJ45 jack might have some lose contacts to the 8 copper wires. Since the new Cat 6 cable works on 1000Mbps(1Gbps) LAN connection, you might want to try the same old 50ft Cat5e cable to another computer(also with Gigabit speed LAN Card). If the result is still 100Mbps LAN speed, then it is your old 50ft Cat5e cable which is causing the issue. You may try to replace both RJ45 jacks with new ones. 2 out of 5 eggsOnly 100 megabit

Pros: Seems like a nice design.

Cons: Poor documentation. Can't find any useful information to explain why it only transfers at 100 megabit.

Other Thoughts: I am unable to get this switch to transfer above 100 megabit. I can bypass it and get full gigabit speeds. Hook up the switch and it's down to 100 megabit. There is no documentation I can find anywhere to help diagnose the problem. I can't recommend this product, as it doesn't give you what you expect, and gives no information or documentation as to why.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Switch, Not Sure How it's "Smart" Though

Pros: Works great, low power consumption, full advertised speeds so far.

Cons: I've never liked designs that have the ethernet ports on the opposite side from the lights, but that's more of a personal preference.

Other Thoughts: Newegg describes this switch as "smart," but I don't see any features that make it smart. It functions perfectly fine as a normal unmanaged switch but there's no extra features that would qualify as "smart." I don't expect it to be a full managed switch or anything but I expected it to have SOMETHING...

5 out of 5 eggsMoney well spent

Pros: Small size, well constructed, and solid. Does not take up much space and LEDs on the face are easy to see.

Cons: Light weight and with cable tension it can move around on the shelf.

Other Thoughts: I got this on sale last week thru Newegg for $25 and I used it to replace an older 5 port unit. Plugged in power cord, connected network cables, and it was done in less than 5 minutes. Wish I had picked up another for that price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Switch

Pros: Runs great. Runs fast. No issues so far, haven't need to reset it or anything. Easily handles transferring huge files from one PC to another while simultaneously can play games and still get great ping times. It's compact and doesn't get hot. I have a several computers at home and a NAS, I was able to connect everything with no issues. Really great device for the price!

Cons: None so far!
