2 out of 5 eggsRouter bad, D-Link makes good on it

Pros: Feature rich and reasonably fast. I wanted a fast wired router to mount in the basement with the rest of the network hardware. I have a separate wired router on the 2nd floor.

Cons: This router has a problem dropping packets on the LAN ports. Ping this router indefinitely with larger (1300 byte) packets and it drops 1-2% consistently and shows RX errors on the statistics screen. It get's worse under load. RMA'd the first one. Second one showed same behavior. The dropped packets were hardly noticeable browsing the web, but killed VOIP quality and performance on my VPN connection to the office.

Other Thoughts: D-Link came through by replacing it with a brand new DIR-825. This thing works great, and though I didn't need the wireless, I may use the guest network feature for visitors. Way to go D-Link!

5 out of 5 eggsD-Link DGL-4100

Pros: Has functioned as advertised. Easy installation and setup.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Though not used [by us], we would prefer U.S.-based telephone user help center.

1 out of 5 eggsAmended Review

Pros: It worked for 90 days +/- :( I'm reposting my review. Three weeks after I posted a 5 egg review, this router dropped my upload speed from 5 Mbps to about 400 Kbps. I spent two days on the horn with my ISP tech support (Bless them) to isolate the router as my source of trouble. Then the fun began. Here is the info that I have retained of my correspondence with D-Link tech support. If you buy one of these routers, BEWARE. They are defective and trying to get an RMA authorization from D-Link is like trying to get a refund from a used car salesman. Good luck. If you're bored and tired of getting taken advantage of over by defective product manufacturers that want to give you a month long run-around about an RMA, please feel free to email D-Link tech support at your leisure and let them know. I'm going to 100 times a day until they issue my RMA authorization.

Cons: D-Link Tech support:Dear D-Link Tech Support, Thank you for diagnosing my defective router so quickly and efficiently during my telephone support session on Friday June 17th. However, the RMA link that was provided to me did NOT work. When I filled out the attached survey and provided this information, someone at D-Link tech support decided to "assign" a DIFFERENT case ID and demanded that I reply ONLY to that one. I'm going to copy and paste all of the information I have retained of our correspondence regarding this defective product that you seem to be very intent on not honoring the warranty on. I'm also going to copy and paste all of this correspondence into my blog, since Newegg will edit. And I'm going to "remind" you good people at D-Link tech support several times a day, EVERY day, until I receive an RMA authorization for this piece of junk router that doesn't work. Thank you so much for ignoring my original email request for tech support, then over riding my phone tech

Other Thoughts: support.

THIS ROUTER IS DEFECTIVE AND D-LINK WILL NOT AUTHORIZE RMA's for it! DON'T BUY IT ... DON'T BUY IT ... DON'T BUY IT.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Has Gigabit ports. Pretty standard stuff now on newer routers.

Cons: Firmware hasn't been updated since 2006. You would like to see new features added over time but it looks like this is not the case. I bought a new Asus RT -N16 which has plenty of support.

Other Thoughts: I own one but don't use it anymore. Doesn't seem to be actively supported via firmware updates.

5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME

Pros: -FAST!
-Supports large number of users
-Gaming doesn't cause other things to slow down
-Easy to configure

Cons: Can't think of anything.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my fraternity about a year ago, after we were very displeased with our business class linksys router. The old router would need to be reset at least twice a day, was very slow, gaming was terrible, etc...

Since installing this, we can have 10-20 people playing on xbox live/psn at the same time! All while people are watching Hulu, Netflix, you name it! This thing, when paired with a descent infrastructure can manage an entire house full of 60 college men easily!

5 out of 5 eggsVery good router

Pros: Firstly, it's a great looking router and even has a rubber stand so you can place it vertically if you wanted to. The router took about 30 seconds to set up and 29 of those 30 seconds involved opening the box, removing the cables and plugging it into my computer. Soon as I did the PC recognized it and within a few seconds I was online.

Later on I actually went into the router control panel to see what all the fuzz was about and I was equally impressed. Menu layout is fairly simple but some options are designed for the tech savvie at heart. That's not a bad thing since an average user like myself can get by without tweaking those settings. But, if you're the techie type and like to find every nook and cranny then this is the router for you.

The gamefuel feature is fantastic for someone on a low bandwidth or peak time connections. It's also fairly easy to set up if you read the tutorials on their website.

Cons: My only problem is that on ocassion, I can't enter the Router Control panel. I've searched for this and I've found that this is a known issue and the only temporary fix is to turn OFF the router, then turn it back ON and then the page works and allows you to login.

Other Thoughts: None

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

Pros: - WIRED Gigabit router - few of these around these days
- Great pass thru speeds (*see cons)
- EASY setup **(unless u a non gamer )
- Tech Support for a year ( replaced a netgear with was only 90 days - however the tech support is in phillipines and they have NO IDEA of things at LEVEL 1 - so nothing new to rest of the field of routers!!)

Cons: Fine Router except there are few things tha I feel are the ...OOOOPS
1) NO REAL VPN passthru - whats up with that?? most all routers do this by DEFAULT!! This was real puzzeling
2) OLD Clunky web interface - even to a ppint of frustrating as its seems DLINK never updated this model interface but the OS seems very new. Doing things like IP RESERVE = two step process....mind wonders why pple need to write TWO SCREENS woth od code to that most other models do via 'check buttons" ITS THAT SIMPLE GUYS!!
3) Stepup has lots of defults for GAMES; however if you NOT A GAMER ; it means you have close some of those ports that are left open ( thus sessions running all the time which slow this router) Doing that manually is a PAIN

Other Thoughts: MAKE IT SIMPLE STUPID !!!
taken one star off for POOR (Pity i cannt under stand philinno lingo - no oiffence) but ... TECH SUPPORT - if you dont know your subject dont start any marketing style talk - makes you look like a bigger looser
Star taken of for clunky interface with NEW PRODUCT FIRWARE.
Great router over all sad to take star off!!
NEW EGG ROCKS . great CS and great company - been a memeber since 2004!!
