Want to connect up to four USB printers to your network, but don't want to string more cabling? If you already have wireless as part of your network, this device will save the day. Not only will it add the printers and act as a print server for them, you can also hook up a computer or Network Accessible Storage (NAS) to the RJ-45 port and make them wireless as well!
This wireless print server also works with some multi-function printers (scanning function on select printers; no fax support), giving you added versatility.Part of Dlink's Rangebooster G series, it operates on both the 802.11b and g standards for maximum possible print job speed. An automatic configuration program configures the server and introduces your printer to it.
If you want to make your printers and an additional Ethernet-enabled device wireless, this may be the gadget for you!
Pros: Very easy setup if your printer is on the approved list.
Cons: Even if your printer is not on the approved list you can make this work. But the documentation does not tell you how. To do so you set up a TCP/IP port with the name of the print server (generally "dlinkps-<6charsMacAddr>) Then you use a port number of 9100, 9101, 9102, or 9103; depending which of the 4 USB ports you are using.
Other Thoughts: The ability of using the scanner function of an all-in-one printer (the only kind it actually recognizes) is both very easy and a bit buggy. Easy in that if your printer/scanner gets recognized as also being a scanner - then GREAT. Mine (an HP PSC 950) was not on the list, but it did get recognized as a scanner - so that was great.
Buggy in that sometimes the communication to the scanner seemed to just drop. Just refreshing the scanner webpage (that is how it is utilized) got it going again.
The scanner webpage gives only limited function of the scanner. It will scan and create only JPG or PDF files. There are no controls for adjusting the scan contrast and light sensing. But on the plus side, if you have a bunch of people who don't need much in a scanner, the ease of using that scanner webpage is really pretty good, (very limited, but very easy and good with what it is).

Great Print Server
Reviewed By: Keithhud on 9/25/2006
Tech Level: high - Ownership: less than 1 day
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: The Print Server did everything that I wanted it to do. 1. Works with my Samsung ML 2010 printer (This printer was not on the approved printer list) 2. Works wirelessly with my DLINK 634M wireless router using WAP with TKIP. Firmware is 1.0. After a little research on the Web, I was able to get my wife’s IBook printing using LPR Printing for MAC’s.
Cons: In the documentation it would have been helpful if DLINK showed how to setup a local TCP/IP port in Windows 2000 and XP to connect a single printer. Same goes for setting up an LPR port for MAC’s. It would be nice to have an onboard flash area to store the print driver(s), if you utilize the DLINK setup utility to install the printer.
Other Thoughts: Before purchasing the DPR-1260, I read several of the reviews posted here on Newegg’s site, this helped me determine what type of issues I might run into once I receive the Print Server. From opening the box the Print Server came in, to printing my first page was less than 10 minutes. For folks that had problems getting the DPR-1260 to work, I recommend setting your system using TCP/IP as a local port or LPR for MAC’s. I have six computers using this little baby and it works great.

Pros: 2 usb ports supporting 2 devices Web interface is rather straight forward
Cons: Doesn't make coffee in the morning
Other Thoughts: Only hiccup seems to be the setup process not always seeing that a driver had been installed previously on the pc. Also, if I point the setup to a local folder containing the proper driver, (I had copied over earlier) It doesn't actually find the driver...either throw in the orig CD or d/l the drivers from the manuf website and install them..then install via dlink.
Got this so I didn't have to leave my pc on all nite, sharing these printers. (daughter in college, pulling all niters studying...well...so she says.)
Anyway, works with; Cannon i9900 Brother MFC 7420 (no scanning on this one tho, as I expected)
Previous reviewers tips are very helpful...Thanks guys!

Good choice so far

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: UPnP discovery, wireless G with support for WPA2, scanning support (check the compatibility list on D-Link's web site)
Other Thoughts: So far my only complaint is how this thing apparently deals with having a wired and wireless network connection. Mine came out of the box with firmware revision 1.21.
Using a wired connection to configure the radio to connect wirelessly went fine. However, once it rebooted, the print server couldn't hold a network connection of any sort. I figured it should fall back on the wired connection if the wireless dropped, but that's apparently not how it works.
So, in my experience, if you want to connect this to your wireless network, you have to connect it to your wired network, configure it to connect wirelessly, and finally, when you reboot it, you must disconnect the wire.
It appears to be able to hold either a WPA or WPA2 connection to my Linksys WRT-54G without issue now.
For those who care, I'm running DD-WRT v23 sp2 micro on the router. It's running both AES and TKIP algorithms, so I'm not sure which the print server is using.
