1 out of 5 eggsExtremely slow with iPad air

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Cheap, good reviews on Newegg

Cons: Very slow with iPad Air 1st generation - can't download at higher than 2mbps. Replaced iPad with Apple, upgraded router firmware, tried every setting in the router configuration, researched issue on google: no luck :( I need another router now to get online with my iPad.

1 out of 5 eggsDrops wireless connections constantly

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Worked the first few months

Cons: Recently wireless performance has been getting worse an worse, it is now displaying the signal, but we are unable to connect sometimes unless we reset it. Then it works for about an hour, stops working for 10 min, works for 30 min, stop working for 5 min, etc. Plugging it in wired, or directly to our modem works perfectly, and constantly, so I know its just this roiuter and just the wireless part, its a real piece after you have had it for awhile, good thing it was cheap.

2 out of 5 eggsI'm writing this review on the cellular network, so you can guess it's not gonna' be nice :)

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Worked well for about 1 year. The setup wizard worked well.

Cons: Started dropping connections after one year. At first some of our cell phones refused to play nice, then tablets started to complain followed by several of our laptops. The only way to fix it is to reset (not just reboot) the router to factory settings. This is a big hassle. My family uses the router the most and my wife is complaining so loudly I'm tossing this piece of junk.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I think routers should provide at least 4-5 trouble free years.

I resorted to the setup wizard because the menus were not very intuitive for someone who works with networking gear for a living. I understand this is consumer grade and I expect a certain amount of hand holding in my router interfaces, but the organization of the menus didn't seem to follow even consumer grade conventions.

Other Thoughts: Isn't supported by OpenWRT or DD-WRT.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid while it lasted

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Gave solid performance for 4 years. No issues or quirks. Good management features. Good value at the time of purchase.

Cons: After 4 years starting dropping connections. Required reboots. Reset to factory. Made sure it had the most recent firmware. Slowed throughput and buggy. 3 months of pain.

Other Thoughts: I feel bad giving 4 stars but I expect better longevity for what should be a higher quality consumer router. It was time for me to upgrade anyway and I did. After much research switched to ASUS RT AC1900 Dual Band.

5 out of 5 eggsStill going strong

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: I've been using this router for over four years with near-flawless performance. I've had it in multiple apartments, a suburban home, and even a three-story mansion and it's held up fine in all of them. I do tons of online gaming and other bandwidth-intensive activities, and haven't had issues.

At the mansion I was living in with five others, we kept having connection issues, poor signal strength, and generally slow networks. I plugged this router into the network, and suddenly everything works, reaching the whole house, and speeds several times better than the old router. Multiple people streaming Netflix, streaming HD video over the network, online gaming, all at once, and no one had any lag issues.

Cons: Honestly, not many that I can think of. Occasional trouble getting certain games working for hosting servers, but that's about all I can recall.

Other Thoughts: Obviously far from the fastest router available on the market these days, but, unless you have really high-end broadband internet, you probably won't notice.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work with iPad Air

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Highly rated on newegg :/

Cons: I have actually had Apple replace my iPad Air first generation because it gets terrible speeds with this router. Turns out it's not the air! It's the router. Something is wrong with it. Yes, I have tried resetting the router to its factory settings.

5 out of 5 eggsstill flawless after 8 months

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: I bought this router at the beginning of the school year for our apartment, we've had about 10 people over at once with no problems. I've had my connection dropped due to my modem but not this router. I'm impressed.

Cons: The lights are really bright. This is nice in the day but awful at night...I'd recommend covering them in duct tape or electrical tape...like two layers.

Other Thoughts: This was a good deal at 80 bucks, and it still is

3 out of 5 eggsOld router, but great customer support

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Very helpful customer support. See details, below

Cons: Router's signal cannot reach far end of house. See details, below.

Other Thoughts: I have owned this router since February 2009. Located at the far end of a subbasement in a split level home, the wireless signal does not reach the top floor at the opposite end of the house. During the past six years, I have had to reset the router twice due to a lost signal. Most recently, today. According to D-Link customer support, the router "lost the connection with the server." As a result I could not connect wirelessly or via ethernet cable to the internet through the router. However, within a half hour, customer support was able to restore the connection. Specifically, Mylene (ID AR004212) was able to walk me through what needed to be done to restore the connection. Amazingly, she did this even though the router was well beyond its one-year warranty period. The restoration took far less than the 15 minutes we were on the phone. I spend at least half that time fruitlessly looking for the Admin password, that I had failed to record in the usual places. I did record it, but found it only after I reset the router.

2 out of 5 eggsVery Disappointed

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: cheap

Cons: Had this less than two years and constantly resetting and losing connections, IP conflicts when people come and go from the network.I have a house with 17 devices turning on and off, phones coming and going. Every time One person comes home and reconnects, someone else gets an IP error. Live gaming on Xbox was a nightmare.
My wife's laptop could not connect at all. Ever.

Finally last week it stopped connecting all together. (light connecting to modem is out). Huzzah! I'm free!

4 out of 5 eggsBeen Great

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Great features, good interface. It has held up well over the past 5 years.

Cons: No new firmware. This router could have a lot more life in it if Dlink had decided to continue supporting their product.

Recently the router has been dropping signal. I had read some fixes from other uses and go to the point that I was turning off all the features I liked, QoS, SPI, mixed mode. With all the features turned off and N only mode, I feel like I have and old Linksys WRT-54G...

Other Thoughts: Sadly I will be upgrading my router soon. I wouldn't have to if Dlink would have continued support for it's product more than just a handful of years.
