5 out of 5 eggsOwned this since March 2009, no problems, good unit

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: I've done the firmware upgrades on it and it works great.

Cons: I'd like to see D Link keep updating the firmware for ths

Other Thoughts: I see people complaining about dropped connections and such. I've had mine since March 2009. I don't have any problems.

2 out of 5 eggsPast its prime

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Decent enough for maybe 1 or 2 devices connecting with wifi. Had no issues with wired connections.
Range is average for a single story home.

Cons: Really terrible when more than a few wireless clients are connected, random disconnects on Ipads and other mobile devices - like its being overtaxed. This was noticeable with a moderate amount of devices in a small home. Very noticeable when company comes over.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend this product for wireless and connectivity requirements for an average household in 2016.

3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Fast transfer speed and wifi. Great wifi range.

Cons: This the second unit I have owned. The first lasted 6 years. My second one I purchased 8 months ago and it is now constantly dropping wifi connection to the internet. I have to power it off to reestablish connection numerous times a day. Time to look for another brand.

4 out of 5 eggsIt works for now

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: It works. Has good range. No problems with set up.

Cons: The second one of these I have had over 2-3 years. (The last one failed after a year or so). I don't think any of them are any better. This time it is plugged into my UPS so maybe it will not get zapped by a power glitch or something.

Other Thoughts: I have had three or four wireless routers over the last 5 years or so. They all seem to fail after a year or two no matter the brand, type, or amount I spend. They all worked, did the job, and this one has better range than the rest. No one complains about speed or dropped signals (up to when they fail). So maybe by plugging it into a decent UPS with a good clamping rating, it will survive more than one year.

1 out of 5 eggsThe DIR-655 is the worst router I have ever owned!

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: It worked for a few months.

Cons: I have purchased three D-Link routers in my life: D-Link DI-524, D-Link DIR-625 and DIR-655. I had great success with the 524 and the 625 D-Link routers. However, the DIR-655 was the worst router I have ever owned. It’s so bad I will never again purchase a D-Link product. It took three attempts to get this going and over a year and a half of sporadic struggles. For convenience sake, I’ll only mention the worst of the worst here. The first DIR-655 was defective and started dropping connections and had to be sent back. Of course it was 31 days after I purchased it from Newegg, so I have to contact D-Link. The wait timeto talk to a customer service rep. was horrendous. The reps. were OK (checked everything that I checked), and deemed the unit defective then issued me an RMA. The second one was worked for about a year and then kept dropping signals, needed to be rebooted every day, etc. Third one lasted a couple weeks and the same things started to happen.
Another issue I had was that I was not able to add an alpha-numeric password for my admin login on the router, but I was able to on my devices (strong passphrase). I called support as a last resort and I updated to the latest firmware (which I usually do) and tweaked some other settings like channel, channel width, mode, etc., all to no avail. This never worked. A lack of security is something that I believe is inexcusable. My conclusion is that there products are not only inaccurate, but inconsistent in the specs.
The range on the DIR-655 was worse than my old DIR-625 (2.4Ghz), which I had in the same location in my house.
The interface was OK, not the greatest, but not horrible.
MAC address filter option is there, but it’s limited to how many devices that you can add. Moreover, it does allow you to add names for the devices like Blu-ray player or Mom’s iPad, etc., and it doesn’t save them or wipes them even after manually saving and rebooting. It seemed to pick up a few host names, but no more than that. Inconsistency once again.
Now I have another Wireless Gigabit Router (not from D-Link), and my world is a happier place…..at least on my network.

Other Thoughts: Don't walk..........run away from this router.

3 out of 5 eggsWorked great at first

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Worked great for the first 8 months or so
-Fast
-Never dropped connection

Cons: I've had it about a year now and at least once a day it drops the connection to the internet, forcing me to hard reset it in order to fix it. This happens every day without fail, sometimes 2-3 times a day.

2 out of 5 eggsConstant Disconnects

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Had decent range when it worked.

Cons: I Had constant disconnect issues with this router. I tried so many things to fix it. Called tech support and alls they told me was my Internet Service Provider was causing the issues. The routers I had before and after both Buffao N600 Worked absolutely perfect. I have some back ground in networking and have a friend who is a network engineer and neither of us could get it working with out Zapping some other 3rd party Firmware to it. which i didn't was to mess with. I do not recommend this.
