3 out of 5 eggsgood while they last

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: I purchased about 5 or 6 of these routers for various people/customers over the past few years. When they work they have been very reliable, speedy and no problems.

Cons: Problem is about half of these have now died at various points after about a year. I think it's because they run fairly hot and eventually burn out. Every one of them does the same thing. Solid lights (except the network jack lights), non responding, unable to factory reset and unable to do the 30/30/30 trick either. Basically the lights come on, but that's it. Because of this, I'll probably stop buying them. Still looking for a wireless N replacement for the old reliable WRT54GL's that I still have in several places and have only had 1 out of about 20+ that have gone bad years later.

Other Thoughts: Like I said...Good while it lasts, but experience tells me they won't generally last.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Connection

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Mulitple Atennas, good range, USB Connection for External HDDs, Quality Appearance

Cons: The unit problems with dropping signal from the ISP, keeping the connection with signal, poor wireless connection to multiple devices (work cpu, personal cpu, mobile devices). Multiple factory resets, changing settings, powering down...nothing seemed to remedy the product. Should have bought a Linksys (home network before D-Link was ran and is still run by a 10 year old WRT54G with little to no issues!)

2 out of 5 eggsWorks great for a short period

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Gigabit works great, lots of options in the admin menu, good for gaming.

Cons: The pros only last about a year and a half, then the router essentially falls apart. Started getting DNS issues, like a black hole, randomly dropping connections, halves internet speed for multiple connections. At two years, it's lucky if it maintains a connection more than a day.

Other Thoughts: It's nice features at a cheap price, but it doesn't last long. Sad that the 12 year old cheap as dirt Linksys still works great. This is my last DLink, as I had a previous one that lasted about the same amount of time.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the feedback as we truly value the input and we are sorry to hear that you are encountering issues with the product. D-Link advises that you perform a a factory reset (by pressing the reset button with a paper clip for 10 seconds) and then download and install the latest firmware form www.support.dlink.com/. If that does not resolve your problem please give us a call at 1-877-453-5465 so one of our technical support reps can assist you . Thank you for choosing D-Link.

1 out of 5 eggsStopped working reliably within a year

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: None that I can think of.

Cons: Device stopped working reliably in less than one year. Would stop accepting connections for no discernable reason. Updating the firmware didn't help. Eventually replaced. Would not waste my money on another D-Link product.

Other Thoughts: A rip-off IMO.

Only 4 eggs based on previous unit. Waiting to see how long this one holds up.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Tech Support

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Great common router, with good support, and good options. Main pro, though, was calling the tech support line, when I got stuck on trying to get my new WAN to connect to it properly. The tech support (his number at the tech support center was AR4631), was knowledgeable, but more importantly, he walked me through a fix without making me feel stupid about not thinking of it myself. He was pretty simple to follow, and didn't rush. So, the product is good, but the tech support raised it up enough so that I'd actually write a small review.

Cons: Doesn't support high-transfer volumes, in case you were looking to upgrade to a higher speed service in the future.

3 out of 5 eggsNice router when it's not dropping WAN or WLAN

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Router was very easy to configure and use.
When everything is working the gigabit ports and Wireless are fast.
Plenty of built in features.

Cons: Constant dropping of the wireless and internet.

Other Thoughts: Recently (right at my one year warranty end period) the router has been randomly dropping my WLAN connections and my WAN port. Starting today now it's just rebooting itself altogether. The router seemed to work fine for about the first 8 months and then on rare occasion would start dropping. I didn't think too much of it because it would happen maybe once in 2-3 weeks. Now it occurs daily, if not multiple times a day. I've done a lot of research and reading and it seems that numerous others are having similar issues with the router. I have tried tweaking settings with DNS, QoS, the wireless as well as updating my firmware and doing a full, hard reset of the router. Nothing seems to help the rebooting. I have also worked with my ISP and it seems that everything coming in through my modem is solid. Also plugging my modem directly into my PC works fine and the modem doesn't reboot or lose connection when the router does. Unfortunately after a lot of tests and monitoring I can't seem to find any consistent activity or factor that causes it to lose it's connections. Not sure if it's failing hardware, bad firmware, or bad setting somewhere.
