5 out of 5 eggsSolid rounter, good technical support

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: This is my second DIR-655. (The first was fried along with several other devices when lightning struck out transformer). I've been very happy with both. I run one desktop (wired), and on the wireless side, two laptops, three printers, a tablet and two internet set top boxes (for Netflix). Connecting wireless devices has been very straightforward with WPS. One of the features on the router I particularly like is being able to open a port to a virtual server. I have a Bitnami Windows web server that I sometimes need to access when I'm away from home and this router enables me to do that.

I'm also very happy with their technical support (increasingly unusual these days)- I'm not a network person so I sometimes need help configuring the router. I've had a very good experience with D-Link's technical support over the years. And today Wendy and Mae (AR0048244) helped me sort out a connection issue after an AT&T outage. Mae asked me to post mention this in my product review which I was happy to do.

5 out of 5 eggsResetting, etc.

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Less than a minute wait time. Easy reconfiguration.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I dealt with a very knowledgeable and professional CS rep, Mylene, ID#: AR004212, Case #: C6709454. I had a problem with My ISP's modem and my router communicating after a very hard reboot on my part. The router had to be reconfigured. I very seldom had to do something like this and so I contacted the mfg. Mylene not only talked me through the reconfiguration, but then she helped me to do a firmware update, and then to "portforward" a program. She did so both patiently and expertly, and stayed with me to make sure that connections all worked and that my connection was working both wired and wireless. It was my ISP's fault that the modem and router weren't communicating, but my fault that the reconfiguration was necessary. I can't say enough about Mylene's efforts. D-Link's customer service should be a standard for all other corporations. They are one of the "good ones." Also, they offer 24/7 customer service.

5 out of 5 eggsD-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: I buy these on sale, keep them in stock for customers when Lightning/electrical issues knock out their equipment. They have good range and are reliable.

Cons: I have only lost one personally when my ups failed in an electrical storm.

Other Thoughts: When mine goes out, Ill probably replace it with the new D-link DIR-890L/R, they will probably have the bugs worked out by then.

1 out of 5 eggsThe DIR-655 is the worst router I have ever owned!

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: The second one worked for almost one year.

Cons: Third time is not a charm. Please see below.

Other Thoughts: The DIR-655 is the worst router I have ever owned!
I have purchased three D-Link routers in my life: D-Link DI-524, D-Link DIR-625 and DIR-655. I had great success with the 524 and the 625 D-Link routers. However, the DIR-655 was the worst router I have ever owned. It’s so bad I will never again purchase a D-Link product. It took three attempts to get this going and over a year and a half of periodic struggles. For convenience sake, I’ll only mention the worst of the worst here. The first DIR-655 was defective and started dropping connections and had to be sent back. Of course it was 31 days after I purchased it from Newegg, so I have to contact D-Link. Needless to say the wait time on hold was horrendous. The techs were OK (checked everything that I checked), and deemed the unit defective then issued me an RMA. The second one was worked for about a year and then kept dropping signals, needed to be rebooted every day, etc. Third one lasted a couple weeks and the same things started to happen.
Another issue I had was that I was not able to add an alpha-numeric password for my admin login on the router, but I was able to on my devices (strong passphrase). I called support as a last resort and I updated to the latest firmware (which I usually do) and tweaked some other settings like channel, channel width, mode, etc., all to no avail. This never worked. A lack of security is something that I believe is inexcusable. My conclusion is that there products are not only inaccurate, but inconsistent in the specs.
The range on the DIR-655 was worse than my old DIR-625 (2.4Ghz), which I had in the same location in my house.
The interface was OK, not the greatest, but not horrible.
MAC address filter option is there, but it’s limited to how many devices that you can add. Moreover, it does allow you to add names for the devices like Blu-ray player or Jimmy’s iPad, etc., but it doesn’t save them or wipes them even after manually saving and rebooting. It seemed to pick up a few host names, but no more than that. Inconsistency once again.
Now I have another Wireless Gigabit Router (not from D-Link), and the world is a happier place…..at least on my network.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product, great service

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Very solid product, had the old version for years before upgrading. Customer support is A+ (main issue turned out to be my modem but they still worked with me)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I got excellent customer service from Kyle and other members of the team in order to resolve my issue (see above). I would highly recommend D-Link for these reasons.

1 out of 5 eggsExtremely slow with iPad air

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Cheap, good reviews on Newegg

Cons: Very slow with iPad Air 1st generation - can't download at higher than 2mbps. Replaced iPad with Apple, upgraded router firmware, tried every setting in the router configuration, researched issue on google: no luck :( I need another router now to get online with my iPad.

1 out of 5 eggsDrops wireless connections constantly

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Worked the first few months

Cons: Recently wireless performance has been getting worse an worse, it is now displaying the signal, but we are unable to connect sometimes unless we reset it. Then it works for about an hour, stops working for 10 min, works for 30 min, stop working for 5 min, etc. Plugging it in wired, or directly to our modem works perfectly, and constantly, so I know its just this roiuter and just the wireless part, its a real piece after you have had it for awhile, good thing it was cheap.

2 out of 5 eggsI'm writing this review on the cellular network, so you can guess it's not gonna' be nice :)

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Worked well for about 1 year. The setup wizard worked well.

Cons: Started dropping connections after one year. At first some of our cell phones refused to play nice, then tablets started to complain followed by several of our laptops. The only way to fix it is to reset (not just reboot) the router to factory settings. This is a big hassle. My family uses the router the most and my wife is complaining so loudly I'm tossing this piece of junk.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I think routers should provide at least 4-5 trouble free years.

I resorted to the setup wizard because the menus were not very intuitive for someone who works with networking gear for a living. I understand this is consumer grade and I expect a certain amount of hand holding in my router interfaces, but the organization of the menus didn't seem to follow even consumer grade conventions.

Other Thoughts: Isn't supported by OpenWRT or DD-WRT.
