DIR-615 C1 technical details

white Reviewed By: RoundSparrow on 1/25/2009
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: DIR-615 C1 is entirely updated internals. It is an Atheros chipset router with the ar9102 radio chip. I have completely dissembled my router. It is identical to the Trendnet TEW-652BRP router in terms of firmware compatibility (the Trendnet GPL download even makes references to the DIR-615 C1). You can cross-flash the Trendnet firmware on this router, but most people agree the D-Link has more options and is better.
The Atheros ar9102 chip is 2x2 MIMO they are cheap to produce. Both antennas are removable which is nice.
This router is Linux based and OpenWRT now runs on this router! It has 32MB of RAM, 400Mhz CPU, 4MB of flash. This router is easy to open (4 screws on bottom, no snaps!) and you can easily solder in a rs232 serial port. A modern compact Linux OpenWRT router!
Cons: 2x2 MIMO isn't as good as the 3x3 MIMO routers out there, but they are more expensive.
Short antennas compared to what I got with other atheros AP81 routers from TP-Link and Planex.

Get it together DLink

white Reviewed By: DLink Doubter on 4/9/2008
Rating + 2
Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Strong fast wireless signal. Easy setup for newbies.
Cons: Incomplete settings and interface. Advanced features do not work. Firewall settings and virtual server don't seem to work or don't work very well. WAN security is somewhat questionable.

Here are my specific issues:
- Virtual Server does not work. That's huge for me.
- What the heck is the check box do on the VS and Port Forward pages: there's no label.
- The time server doesn't seem to work. Or maybe ntp1.dlink.com doesn't have the right time. Can't tell.
- The firewall settings don't allow for explicit port blocking or wildcard IP blocking like the DI-604.
- The scheduler does allow for time blocks that cross over midnight, ie I want this port open from 7AM to 2AM.
- DDNS does not work, I really don't care, but if it's there, it should work.

- I ran a port scan on www.hackerwatch.org... the only port that was secure was 80. That's the only one I actually want OPEN!! There's seems to be no place in the interface to lock the other ports down.
Other Thoughts: I've had a DLink DI-604 ver. E1 running for five years now. It's been rock solid, simple to configure, and secure. So when upgrading to a Wireless router, I went DLink without hesitation. Unfortunately this DIR-615 ver A1 fw 1.10 doesn't seem to work as advertised. I host a web server at home, so I need Virtual Server passthrough functionality, but no matter what I do it will not work. I even managed to crash the router twice while playing with the settings.

I'm also disappointed in the DDNS feature though I could live without it.

For now I'll be going back to the DI-604 and the DIR will be acting as an AP. Needless to say, I've very disappointed in DLink with this purchase.

C'mon DLink, this product isn't ready for market. Release some new firmware, fix these issues, and do a little testing. Until that point, there's no way I'd recommend this product to anyone.

As for newegg ... another perfect transaction. If only newegg could teach DLink a little something about quality

Works ok for a while

white Reviewed By: on 12/21/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Works well for a while. Got it on sale for $20, free shipping. Plastic, so it will be able to smash.
Cons: Unexplicably loses internet connection. You can connect to the router fine, but get an "invalid arguement" when connecting to the internet. Tried every security setting, but it even does this with all security turned off. Firmware is up to date. Came home one day and can no longer connect to the internet despite not changing a thing. Maybe the firmware will be updated soon so maybe I'll have a usable device.
Other Thoughts: I'm using this for the ipod touch, which I've had zero problems connected to wireless routers. Now I know why it was on sale.

Tech Level Tech Level: low - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: It does what it says it does.
The iPod Touch and the laptop have no trouble connecting and I'm not having a problem with dropped connections.
Hardwarewise the router works.
Cons: The folks at D-Link made it harder than it had to be for this newbie to set up the router.
The cd is only useful if everything goes perfectly if it doesn't and you have to the job manually that interface is not intuitive and the manual doesn't give you the information you need as a newb (Lots of other information but the not the "do this next" stuff they seem to think you know about.).
I found what I needed in a YouTube video but I imagine other newbies must have been ready to drop kick the router.
Other Thoughts: Someone needs to re-write that pdf manual so that, if necessary, a newbie can follow step by step instructions.
And they should probably be of the go here and do this variety.
And do something about that set up cd.

Worst router

Pros: None.
Cons: Worst router ever. The internet keeps dropping off for no reason. And the worst thing is that even wired connection to the router doesn't work, I know it is a problem with the router because internet is fine when I connect to the modem directly. I would not recommend this product.
