5 out of 5 eggsWorth the extra money

Pros: This unit really does operate at better speeds than a hard-wired 10/100 router at a cable distance of only 18'- and a wireless distance of about 15'; but I have a lot of bluetooth gear, two wi-fi devices, a cordless landline set, and a large screen HDTV sitting right on top of this device- and it still works with max bars. My backups to a NAS device are also a good 20% faster- and that matters, because I have a lot of music and add to it regularly. I bought the matching D-link router here today for about the same price they want for this dongle.

Cons: I didn't buy this here- even though I wanted to. I have one already, and I wanted two more- but at this juncture, I had to buy from another vendor selling at about half the current NewEgg price. I'd rather buy here than anywhere else- support being the reason.

3 out of 5 eggsnot durable enough

Pros: Great bandwidth and response time

Cons: Not built tough enough to hold up when being utilized with laptop PC. Sticks out to far and didn't have flexability to tilt or bend at point of insertion to USB.

Other Thoughts: Compared with other products that have equal technology capability this device was too expensive. I am a committed D-Link user but this falls short of my expectation...

2 out of 5 eggsDied in a year

Pros: Worked well for a year.

Cons: Died in a year like a day before the warranty went out but I did not get to it in time. Cd that came with it was useless but thats common. Since I bought it I have seen the same or better quality product way cheaper, less then half the price, it was 50$ when I got it.

5 out of 5 eggsworks well on Win 7 x64

Pros: Good speed, comes with USB extender cradle

Cons: D-Link wireless utility didn't work for me. Had to uninstall it and use standard windows wireless interface. Don't bother trying to use the D-Link interface.

Other Thoughts: With Win 7 x64, I initially ran the latest software from the d-link support site which updated the firmware and installed the D-Link wireless utility. Couldn't get a connection.
Uninstalled the utility and then manually installed latest x64 driver from the same download package and it works great with the standard windows interface.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Works great. Got it to use with WD Live for streaming and had no problems out of the box with 130mb/sec. Found if you access router and go into manual wireless network settings and change channel width from the default setting of 20mhz to auto (20/40mhz). 20mhz caps speed at 130. I am now getting 300mb/sec.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsDon't use the D-Link 140 driver

Pros: Im running Windows 7, 64 bit system on an intel duo core. This did not work right out of the box with that useless driver it comes with, However after reading several reviews here on Newegg, I went to the RaLink website and downloaded the RT 2870 driver, Then after installing that driver onto my system I deleted the old driver and restarted my system. I had to make a new network connection with this driver and then Windows 7 acknowledged it and it is working superbly. I am not sure how fast Its going but seems very very fast. So glad I do not have to RMA. Thank you Newegg.

Cons: Now that I am using a good driver. None!

Other Thoughts: Save yourself time and dissappointment throw out the cd driver that comes with this Network adapter and just go to RALink.

2 out of 5 eggsCan't get it to work on Win7 64 bit Home

Pros: Works on Win XP Pro 32 bit.

Nice little extension holder for the device.

Cons: Bought this specifically because it was on Windows 7 64 approved hardware list. Went round and round with Dlink support. They were very patient and I did everything they asked to get it working but it just won't work. They finally asked me to install it in another computer. I had an XP Pro 32 bit HTPC and I installed it and it worked right away. Unfortunately, I already have a good working adapter on that system. So now I have an adapter I don't need but don't think I can send back because it works on 32 bit systems.

Other Thoughts: Old stock from Newegg? This came with firmware 1.50 (rev B Adapter) but Dlink says that's no good for Win 7 64. Had to go to Dlink and download 1.60 (In Dlink speak, the driver is the same as the firmware, which is different from any other devices I own). I just bought this from Newegg on 7/28/10

I see others have gotten this adapter to work on Win 7 64 so I don't know what's different about my system. Quad core AMD CPU, Gigabyte MA770-UD3 MB Win 7 Home 64 bit, all latest updates installed.

I'm very frustrated by this.

3 out of 5 eggs"RangeBooster" is a lie, just average, don't pay extra.

Pros: Works - sends and receives signals.
D-Link reputation. Other brands even worse.

Cons: Lower range than my old D-Link DWA-125 (N, 150 Mbs) for less than 30 bucks, so "RangeBooster" is a fraudulent promo. - 2 eggs.
Real tested max web speed was about the same ~ 65 Mbs/sec download. So no real speed improvement.

Other Thoughts: All tried so far so called "dual bend" and "RangeBooster" adapters perform worse than simple N or even G adapters. So don't spend extra money on this advertised c... More expensive ones have lower range and average speed in real public wireless networks. D-Link has still better performance than dual band Netgear or Linksys adapters I tried. I thought about returning this D-Link DWA-140 as well and getting cheaper and better one, but too lazy...

1 out of 5 eggsno go for ubuntu 10.04

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: Does not work out of the box for Ubuntu 10.04, even though the wireless wiki says it works.

Other Thoughts: I guess some versions do, just not the one I got. I have better things to do than to try and hack on this all day just to get it to work. It's going back.
