Awesome
- Pros: Quick UI and remote response. High quality video, especially for DivX/XviD files. Great plug-ins, might write my own. Fast and easy setup. 100% quiet.
- Cons: Some plug-ins are buggy. Need to have server always on (But this helps keep the box responsive and quick). Not uPnP AV compliant (but doesn't really need to be). Needs a hack in order to play more formats. USB port is only for firmware upgrades.
- Other Thoughts: I researched dozens of streaming boxes and considered building an HTPC but this box has the best price/performance ratio and was the best option.
Good Performance and Value
- Pros: I bought this with little understanding of video and audio formats. I was seeking to collect all of the media in the house onto a hard drive, mostly to put it into a format accessible to wife and kids (after a few broken DVD players.) Also the ability to play back foreign content "region free" was important.
I was favorably impressed by the Connected software demos you can get from DiVX. That pretty much sold me on the product. The idea that I could have the same interface from all of the computers in the house, plus any units running the software.
What I did not anticipate was the learning curve of converting all of my video content to DiVX/Xvid format, but I was able to muddle through with help from the website and user community. Getting photo and music on is trivial.
Comments to other reviews:
* There is AC3 & MP3 audio support just not DTS * The USB front panel port is currently only for firmware updates, no playback in this version yet.
- Cons: You need to have a PC server available to make it work (actually you can have more than one. Rather than tying up my desktop, I built a small lowcost HTPC just for this. I kept two servers running while I made the transition to the new one.)
720p might be a con, I still have an SDTV in my house. I hope this product gets migrated to 1080p hardware by the time I can buy a new HDTV.
- Other Thoughts: i didn't try wireless, but only because I had put a lan port behind my media area when I moved in the house. I did try putting the server on a wireless machine and that worked fine (it just didn't exercise the wireless on the DSM330)
Since I bought it there's been a firmware release. Apparently there's a software release in the works. Support for other formats is available using a sanctioned hack that will be formalized in the new release. The next release should have DivX7 (H.264 and Matroska)
The optical SPDIF was important to me, as was the S-Video, because of my old-fashioned setup. It also has HDMI (and SCART) so that was a selling point too when I upgrade (or move to Europe!)
Very Useful Piece of Equipment
- Pros: Plays my DivX videos smoothly over the wireless (I'm using a Linksys G router w/ WPA enabled) with great resolution. Makes watching my videos so much eaiser than before when I was using thumb drives and a laptop. Another great feature about the product is that it comes with a USB port on the front so if you do have something you want to watch from a thumb drive then you can. Setup is cake as long you know your network configuration settings.
- Cons: With the wireless, it sometimes disconnects from the DivX Connected server or the server freezes up and I have to go restart it (I'm running Vista so that probably doesn't help). The unit takes awhile to connect to the server upon startup, but then again I am kind of impatient.
- Other Thoughts: Overall, this a great unit and I am very pleased with my purchase. As said, it much easier than me hooking up my laptop and copying my videos to a thumb drive to play on my TV. I haven't tried going wired yet but I'm sure it would run a little better that way and I probably wouldn't be having some of the minor issues I stated above.
