Securely share high-speed Internet access and files with computers, game consoles or media players from greater distances in your home or office. The D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router (DIR-825) lets you quickly create a secure wireless network using the latest Draft 802.11n wireless technologies offering greater range and data speeds than the older 802.11b/g standards, (when used with Draft 802.11n-compatible wireless adapters) while still being fully backwards compatible with them—perfect for mixed-mode environments.
The router's MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) technology also makes it a natural choice for multimedia fanatics, minimizing errors and optimizing data speed through the use of multiple antennas for both sending and receiving.
Need to give voice, gaming, or media streaming priority? The DIR-825 has integrated Intelligent QoS (quality of service) technology to do just that. The router analyzes wired and wireless traffic and separates it into multiple data streams. These streams are prioritized by sensitivity to delay, so applications like VoIP (voice over Internet protocol), video and music streaming and online gaming are given priority over Web browsing.

Pros: This is my 3rd dlink router in 6 years. It is by far the biggest advance forward. Specifically * The 5ghz and 2.4 ghz do work simultaneously. Well. * The QOS and WISH features allow me to run 2 media renderers and 2 workstations at the same time. Prior to this router, connecting to the renderers was dicey at times. The renders and the PCs missed or skipped on play back. That's all gone now. This router adds QOS smarts to the LAN and manages local traffic. Wonderful!
I split my traffic between 5ghz and 2.4ghz. Ironically I had to do it backwards, 5ghz for the workstation and 2.4ghz for the older media renderers that only do G. However, it works well.
The internet to desktop performance remains excellent as always. I can measure a slight decrease when all of the QOS and wish features are on (using speedtest.net). This is to be expected, attention is given to the local streaming services. And even then, its ridiculously fast... over 24 megabits
Cons: I 'over expected' on the shareport feature. Technically it does work, however it only allows one client at a time share. So if I have 4 PCs and 1 USB drive attached to the 825, it allows any one of them to "check out" the usb drive. Everyone else is told to wait until the checked out user is done. I thought I was getting a traditional shared drive. That all pc's could access a shared drive simultaneously. The comment "for all to share" is not false, but mislead me. I would suggest specific clarity on dlink's marketing material.
This works technically and may be right for some. Not me.
Other Thoughts: Like one of the other users, I used old school configuration through the router's web interface. I was "migrating" from an existing router, so some of the newer autoconfig tools looked interesting would have taken me, an existing dlink customer, longer.
So I'm not offering comments either way on how the automated setup features work.

Seems just fine so far... with a couple caveats

Pros: Setup was pretty easy for me - I brushed aside the wizards and did the manual config. It worked fine both as the main internet gateway (with DSL modem plugged directly in, static IP) and also as a subnet off another router (dhcp). Range on the 2.4 GHz band in G mode seems very similar to my two netgear routers (a WGR 614 v6 and a WNR3500) and also to my ActionTec DSL modem's wireless signal - which is not really surprising, but I had hoped for some improvement. I haven't done full testing on the 5 GHz band or in N mode, though I do have one computer connected that way and it seems to be working fine. I transferred 2 gb worth of pictures from my 100M ethernet-connected computer to the 5 GHz N connected computer, and it took about 3 minutes. Not bad. I wish I had more than one machine with a 1000M ethernet adapter so I could experience what that kind of speed is like... I like the form factor, & the UI. I like the detailed help & explanations of the settings; better than NetGear.
Cons: I have firmware 1.00, July 10 2008, which the unit claims is the latest when doing the automatic check. However, looking at their website, it shows that 1.01 is now available, and it explicitly says SharePort was added. I'm about to upgrade so hopefully this will give me the network storage functionality I partially bought this unit for!
Also - the MAC authentication doesn't just apply to wireless access, but to the entire LAN! I didn't understand this when I first started putting MAC filters in - I put a couple addresses in, then applied the settings, and suddenly I couldn't access the router, 'cause my wired machine wasn't one I had added yet! I had to reset to factory defaults and start over. It's a nice feature to be able to do full LAN MAC filtering, but in my situation I need only the wireless access to be MAC filtered; I don't want to have to put in the MAC addresses of every device on the LAN. (don't know; maybe this changes with new firmware)
Other Thoughts: Anyway, I like all the QOs features this unit has. Not using them yet, but I like them. I'd use them if the wireless MAC filtering worked, so I could have this unit be my main gateway (which I share with others in the building, and I want to be able to throttle them). Now I'm using it only for my personal subnet, with the WNR3500 being the main gateway. It has enough QOs features anyway, but not as comprehensive as the D-Link.

Pros: When it works, it's great and fast and has quite reasonable reach.
Cons: The version I purchased (Hardware B1, Firmware 2.02NA) is still an experimental product as far as I can tell. After numerous consultations with first and second level tech support, it became clear that they couldn't fix the problems. Basically, the issue is that it does not RELIABLY field requests for service from users. This is particularly so for wireless, but has also been observed by wired users. Generally, if your computer is on line when we recycle the router, you'll get an IP address. If you're not on line, it's very iffy as to whether you do or not. As noted, I've spent many calls with the tech support folks, all of whom are friendly and somewhat knowledgeable - but to no avail. I've now replaced this with a Linksys WRT54GL and I couldn't be happier - even though it's a bit slower.
Other Thoughts: When the next hardware or firmware revisions come out, the story may well change.

Pros: Original firmware worked fairly good
Cons: Newest firmware is absolutely terrible!
Other Thoughts: I usually don't care to write reviews on a product, but this router is so bad i feel compelled to warn everyone before they waste their hard earned cash. If you do any P2P sharing of any kind be prepared to reboot your router at least twice a day! the router just becomes un-responsive and you cant even login to it so you can gracefully reboot it. This means All services such as your VOIP service just stops working until you unplug the router for a hard reboot. Please do yourself a favor and avoid this router like the plague!!

Bad support and DoA
Reviewed By: on 11/25/2009

Pros: The white color is...pretty.
Cons: It's DoA. Tech support won't call me back, and I wrote them weeks ago. It's never even powered on, and I suspect it's a simple matter of the converter's the dead part, but I didn't buy this from Newegg and so I have to go through D-Link.
Other Thoughts: I've always used D-Link network adaptors, this is my first router. Obviously not happy that there IS a problem much less that they don't seem to even acknowledge it.
