5 out of 5 eggsWorks Fine w/ 4 VLANs/SSIDs

Pros: I purchased this as part of an effort to compartmentalize my home network. I created VLANs/SSIDs for guests, trusted wireless, appliances, and video. Works great with dot1Q VLANs and interoperates with a Cisco SG-300 multilayer switch. Very reliable. At full output I could walk a couple blocks away from my home and still get a strong signal. I run it at 12.5% or 25% power output for home use. Runs 24/7 to support IP Cameras. Have not had a single crash or failure. Good diagnostics and ability to view connected devices.

Cons: The only issue is that configuring the device for dot1Q operation is a bit tricky in order to retain management from one of the VLANs. A how-to guide for dot1Q/VLAN/Management would really be nice to make this more approachable for non-network types.

5 out of 5 eggsSimple pro-sumer device

Pros: PoE, Range, Simple GUI, save changes for each configuration page and then save configuration and apply allows for single reboot where other brands reboot after saving each page! DHCP RELAY!

Cons: Auto channel doesn't seem too smart.

Other Thoughts: I've actually purchased 6 of these over the past 3 years. The flexible configuration allow it to very strict with security by using ACLs, multi SSID, etc. They can also be used for range extenders and easily act as wireless bolt ons to existing small business or home office network.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works great when it does work. Pretty simple and painless to set up if you know what you're doing. VERY cheap for what you're getting. PoE makes installation easier if you don't have a power outlet near where you want the unit to go.

Cons: I have 3 of these in place at a business, and they all stop working unless I reboot them about 2-3 times a week (sometimes more often). Tried the most recent firmware (1.30 as of the time I wrote this) as suggested by D-Link support, but no good.

From what I can see on Google, a lot of other users have also reported this. Can see the network and try to connect to it, but I can't pull an IP address through DHCP (or even use a static IP, for that matter). Power cycle the unit, and it happily works until the next time. It's kind of a nuisance when you have a couple of these in a business.

Other Thoughts: Definitely not bad for the price, but again, I'd look elsewhere if you need something for business use. For home use, the need to reboot frequently is not as much of a headache. Business use where uptime is more important....I'd spend a few more bucks and look elsewhere.

Manufacturer Response:

We thank you for your feedback as we really do appreciate and value your input. We are sorry to hear that you have been experiencing connection problems with the DAP-2553. Please note that the DAP-2553 is capable of acting as a DHCP server. To enable this, log into router and click on advanced settings in the left toolbar then click on the folder DHCP Server. Then from the dropdown menu under DHCP Server Control select enable. Refer to pages 46 through 49 of the user manual for more detailed information. If you tried these suggestions and are still having issues perhaps D-Link technical support can help you. In addition, if the warranty period has not expired, you may qualify for a replacement. Go to www.support.dlink.com. We thank you for choosing D-Link.

1 out of 5 eggsLots of configuration options but horrible range

Pros: Many configuration options

Cons: Horrible range. I have a small home, and I placed this AP in a central location with no obstructions in my home's first floor. My signal kept dropping when upstairs. I had a Dlink wireless router that was 8 years old, and got better range out of that one. Very disappointed on newer Dlink products.

No simultaneous dual-band, which is a bummer when you have a mix of devices. I had to stay on the 2.4Ghz band because of it.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat When It Worked

Pros: Ease of Operation, Nice Interface, Desk Stand

Cons: Not Reliable, Finicky, Low Quality Build, High Price, Inferior Components, Poor Coverage Area

Other Thoughts: This is kind of funny, but every single network issues I have had in the last two years were due to a D-Link product failing. Hmmmmmm, what does this tell us about D-Link Quality. I purchased 4 D-link Switches and every single one failed. I replaced them with HP and they work fine. The only D-Link product that I have left is an NAS. I'm holding my breath on that one!!!!

This D-Link DAP-2553 was purchased on 5/29/2010. It failed last evening on 1/9/2013. Now all that happens is that the Power LED blinks.

Connection speeds in the last few weeks started getting slower and slower. I had to reboot the DAP-2553 frequently. When I finally power cycled it, the unit completely died.

I will not purchase any more D-Link products in the future. At one time, D-Link made really long-lasting robust products, but now they are mostly junk.

A friend and colleague of mine runs a computer repair business. He has also refused to ever recommend or purchase D-Link products because of many failures both by his units and those of his clients.

Done with D-Link!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome when configured correctly

Pros: Coverage area, AP array, reliability (see comments)

Cons: 2.4 Ghz + AES encryption = The common loss of connectivity until device is rebooted everyone experiences

Other Thoughts: We have 4 of these in 5 Ghz AP array mode, 40 Mhz channel, WPA2+AES, they all work perfectly, practically bulletproof. Some are PoE and some are not. We also have 3 of these in 2.4Ghz AP array mode, 20 Mhz channel, WPA2+TKIP. In the 2.4Ghz mode, any attempt to use TKIP+AES or AES only with 20 Mhz or 40 Mhz channels will result in the common problem of the device stops working, devices stuck obtaining IP, and so forth.

2 out of 5 eggsBumpy road

Pros: 2.4/5ghz
About as much manageability you can get without buying a Meraki
Good signal

Cons: Poor support
Network connectivity drops out for no reason
Aged management console

Other Thoughts: I've had a bumpy road dealing with this access point. First, I was sold an overseas model with 1.26 firmware (it went up to 1.25 for USA). I was stuck with limited settings until a new 1.30 USA firmware was released a week ago, over several months after purchasing the unit. Do not enable the auto-channel feature, it picks the poorest channel of them all. Manually select a channel and wait a few days to see if the signal drops out or if the network connectivity goes away completely. I found that channel 2 is working the best, although I still have to restart the AP time to time. I've been having issues getting machines to connect to the network after leaving. More specifically Windows 7 laptops and Macs. When they leave and come back, I have to restart the AP and then they can connect. It's been an annoyance to say the least.

2 stars from me

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy

Pros: Somewhat aerodynamic for throwing into garbage

Cons: Unreliable, initially dropped connections irregularly, then became more frequent; wireless connectivity ultimately became useless, as users can connect to AP but cannot send/receive traffic; D-Link firmware updates do not address problem, only 1y warranty. Search for 'DAP 2553 drops connection' before buying.

2 out of 5 eggsflaky AP

Pros: Easy setup, plugged into router and worked straight up. Good config page.

Cons: Occasionally clients can connect but with no IP/network/internet connectivity..have one person that stays connected but everyone else can't. Only thing that resolves is hard rebooting the AP. Pretty flaky for a "business-grade" AP, not impressed.

Other Thoughts: Going to try the 1.27 beta firmware to see if that helps anything. Link is at: http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/ just browse for the router and you'll see it in downloads.
