1 out of 5 eggsPlug and play???

This review is from: D-Link DGS-1008G Gigabit Desktop Switch - Retail

Pros: None as of yet

Cons: It powered on. All lights are blinking. Computer is saying Ethernet cable isn't plugged in. PS3 can't establish Network. Apple TV isn't connecting.

Other Thoughts: Network is just dead. I plugged my Linksys 5 port back in and it works fine. Only thing I can think of is the box says "minimum requirements Cat 5e", but manual says anything Cat 5 will work. Either way, it's not working.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks!

This review is from: D-Link DGS-1008G Gigabit Desktop Switch - Retail

Pros: Does what it's supposed to do without unnecessary bells and whistles.

Cons: Unclear how the switch appropriates bandwidth to different devices.

Other Thoughts: I use this after my wireless router to network the rest of the house (wired obviously). Initially I was using an extra wireless router for this purpose but all of the security protocols and tech in the router was difficult to deactivate and it was nearly impossible to get other devices to show up on my network. This switch is simple and does exactly what it is supposed to do without unnecessary bells and whistles.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Switch!

This review is from: D-Link DGS-1008G Gigabit Desktop Switch - Retail

Pros: Gigabit speeds, jumbo frame support, low power usage! Flawlessly connects multiple devices back to my router!

Cons: Cost when not on sale

Other Thoughts: Definitely a worthwhile purchase if you can find it on sale, regular price is somewhat high compared to similar switches from other manufacturers

4 out of 5 eggsNice product. Get HW vB.

This review is from: D-Link DGS-1008G Gigabit Desktop Switch - Retail

Pros: - Works as expected.
- Nice design, looks good on a desk or any visible locations.
- Top LED's let you know the ports used, activity and connection speed.

Cons: - Glossy finish is a dust and fingerprints magnet.
- Newer units come with a USB power connector inconveniently located on the side of the unit instead of at the back with the Ethernet cables.

Other Thoughts: As previously mentioned, new units (HW v.C) come with a USB power connector. While that might be a good idea so that you can use any USB power adapter to supply the switch, the connector is strangely placed on one side of the switch instead of being at the back where you would expect.

If you want the ones with the normal power connector, look for HW v.B
You might still be able to find those in stock at local retailers. (The HW version is printed on the white label on the bottom of the box, along with the Model Number, Serial Number and UPC Barcode.)

4 out of 5 eggsThey Work

This review is from: D-Link DGS-1008G Gigabit Desktop Switch - Retail

Pros: They work and you can have multiple of them on the same network without causing conflicts. I want to say they have really improved my lag/latency, but that is very hard to say beyond a shadow of the doubt - I might just be talking myself into it. :-) It comes with the screws and plugs so you can hang to a wall if you want too, plus it is actually kind of small for an 8 port switch, in my opinion.

Cons: The only major con I have is that stupid USB power connector on the side of the device. The plug itself I feel like I am going to break every time I touch/move the switch. I understand (I think) why it is on the side. The device itself is only as wide as 8 ports, so it is rather small for an 8 port switch and they needed to put the power plug somewhere. The curved design is odd to me as well, cannot really stack these on each other...well you can, but not without some fear that the one sitting on top will not fall off.

Other Thoughts: I bought 4 of theses, not from Newegg. I have one plugged directly into my wireless router which I am only running two computers on (main computers used for gamming and everything else main computers are used for), I then have another one plugged into my wireless router which then has the other two switches plugged into it running two Roku 3, two directv, home phone, printer, NAS, PS3, etcetera. one of the switches is tied back into the network via TP-Link TL-PA4010kit powerline adapter which appears to be a great way to connect your network if you do not feel like crawling around in your attic or crawlspace to run wires from one side of the house to the other (review already wrote for those) and you are NOT looking for gigabyte connectivity for the devices on the other end. Before setting all this up I performed numerous bandwidth tests on sites that also so lag/latency. average tests in the beginning for large and small packets combined were around 35-40ms. after setup and only having these devices plug/routed through my wireless router tests on the same site reflected an average of 10-15ms.
