5 out of 5 eggsAbove My Expectations.

Pros: I would like to give this product a fair review. Explanation: I've had a lot of complications with different routers lately, which prompted me to give this router (DSR-500) a try. So far I'm very satisfied with the product. The through-put from WAN OR LAN is above acceptable. Also, I'm very pleased to find the rack mounting hardware (Standard 1U / 19") is included. Luckily you can configure and manage the device with out the need of a console cable. However the console cable is included. It's highly recommended to update the firmware to the latest version before operating. The firmware seems to be in alpha state. Some reviews mentioned features which are not available at this time in the current firmware, but will be released later.

I have tried multiple test on this product, I'm very satisfied with the results. It seems rock solid. I can't wait for future developments.

Cons: A) The original firmware contained options for all of the DSR devices. Including Wireless. Despite the DSR500 does not contain wireless hardware.
** Updating to latest version cleared that up **

B) The web management interface can be a little confusing. Once you learn your way around it's fair enough to operate.

C) The logging system at this time seems to be lacking. Which is really important to me.

3 out of 5 eggsWhy Would You Think About Load Balance?

Pros: For the price, this is not too bad of a device.

Cons: No POE ( but it does not cost that much.

Other Thoughts: If you want load balance you are going to have to spend the BIG bucks. Two lan port is great. Connect one to your ISP and the other to a switch running VLAN. Set one port for VLAN Trunk and connect this to the WAN port. Let the router do the routing. If you want something more, Cisco will be happy to take your money, but get ready to spend over $1K, maybe less.

1 out of 5 eggsAre you kidding me?

Pros: Uhh the UI is pretty thorough and straight forward to configure mostly. Some really nice add-on features around vpn etc... if you care. Documentation is pretty thorough.

Cons: Why have 2 WAN ports if you can't load balance across them, and the best you can do is failover, and that is wildly erratic? I just read the D-link site, and they claim that outbound load balancing will be available in a FUTURE feature. This is a major FAIL in my book. I only bought it to do outbound load balancing! BTW this thing is so HOT that I am buying an additional external fan!

Other Thoughts: I have tried a number of different configurations, and while they work for a few minutes ultimately they fail. I had such high hopes, and now I am left waiting for some firmware release that may or may never come. Why have two wan ports if you aren't going to support outbound link balancing?
