5 out of 5 eggsSolid little WAP

Pros: Reliable, strong signal. Small form factor. Has capability to handle VLAN tags and multiple SSIDs.

Cons: Configuring multiple SSIDs was not straightforward. VLAN configuration was goofy, to say the least (at least when one is used to professional grade gear, such as Foundry/Brocade or Cisco). There was no setting to block access to admin screen from the wifi network, such as the old IronPoint 200 had (old Foundry WAP). No option to configure just "g/n" -- it's "b/g/n" or "n" -- kind of irritating. The old "b" standard shouldn't be forced into the mix like that, definitely not good to still be allowing.

Other Thoughts: This is essentially D-Link's entry level SOHO WAP. Single frequency design, which is okay as I wasn't concerned about 5GHz. They need to clean up and follow more conventional networking with their VLAN and SSID configurations. I had trouble getting multiple SSIDs working, but I'll get it once I find some more in-depth documents. Setting up the ethernet interface, I was surprised to discover it can be both tagged and untagged, meaning that it'll handle your direct CAT-5 connection even after you've applied the VLAN configuration. Nothing necessarily wrong with that except it makes it easier to compromise one's LAN (though with the physical access needed, you've probably got other issues as well).

But, so far, this little unit is reliable and steady and fast. I have it on the other side of a room full of metal ducting, no real signal loss. It's got a good price for what it is (currently almost half off normal price, putting it in line with much less capable WAPs).

2 out of 5 eggsFrequent reboots required

Pros: //good range with strong signal. Fast speeds.

Cons: Initially all was good with this access point. Connecting about 10-15 devices around house. Range was good and connectivty seemed fine. In the past few months it has developed a very annoying habit of failing to transmit data. Devices will read as connected but there really is no active connection. This is most noticeable on a LG DVD player with wireless that we use to watch netflix. However ipads, my sons computer and laptops are all variably affected. It is becoming more frequent occurring up to 3-4 times/day and requiring a power cycle of the access point before it will function again.

4 out of 5 eggsGood AP, You need to know two things

Pros: Good stable AP, management software helps out for some configuration items.

Cons: Many reviewers think that this will auto default when losing power. This access point has two step configuration saves. The first step is to apply all your changes on the various pages, the second step is to "save and apply" which will reboot the AP and write the changes to the flash. Some people don't read the manuals. The second thing you need to know is that the firmware deployment via the AP Array software will brick your AP consistently. Newegg will send replacements, but it is a real PAIN when you need to RMA 14 AP's. I am glad I attempted updates prior to configuring!

1 out of 5 eggsCan't configure

Pros: can't find any - can't configure

Cons: documentation is abysmal and little support. Trying to use access point on network, but can't find it to configure. So direct connected to computer as suggested in documentation - but device doesn't respond. CD has some programs on it but no explanation of what they are for, and when you try to download they won't run. Troubleshooting is written for Windows XP(!) and won't work on my Win 7 or win 8 machines

Manufacturer Response:

We want to thank you for the feedback as we greatly appreciate the input and we are sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with the product. We advise that you download and install the latest firmware from www.support.dlink.com. In addition, through that website, you can contact our technical support team (or call 1-877-453-5465) and a agent will be glad to help you resolve your problems. We thank you for choosing D-Link.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat AP

Pros: SNMP enabled, great web interface, strong signal.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: It's in my third floor apartment, signal works great from the basement apartment. I have about 10 wifi devices that connect to it.

4 out of 5 eggsOverall Good AP

Pros: This access point has good range, and overall solid connectivity.

It includes some security features which I enjoy, such as hard coding the MAC address of the default gateway to help prevent arp poisoning (for the default gateway IP) on the AP.

It also allows for remote log collection (sending a copy of the AP's logs to another server for long term storage/easier sorting and searching).

SSH connectivity (which disables Telnet by default if this is enabled) is a nice plus, with a fairly robust command line interface. It accepts short commands, such as typing in 'reb' instead of 'reboot' to do a soft reboot of the AP.

Cons: Have had two incidents so far where my laptop would associate correctly with the AP, and my DHCP server would show that it handed an address to the laptop but the laptop would not apply the address to the wireless interface for some reason. I would need the issue to happen again and perform some more digging to decide what is at fault here, but I didn't have this issue with my old AP.

Does not offer the 5GHz frequency, but it specified that in its description/details so I was aware of this limitation when purchasing it.

I have yet to see any wirelessly connected device hit above 130 Mbps (specs say AP can provide up to 300 Mbps), even when the device is a foot away with clear line of sight between the AP and my wireless device. This wireless device has it 270-300 Mbps with other AP's, so I know it is capable of doing so. File transfers average about 3 MB/s (max I've seen is 4 MB/s with this AP), which is okay, but I've had AP's where I'm connected with 270-300 Mbps hit about 7-10 MB/s transfer speeds. This has caused issues for me when trying to stream large movies over the wifi network (1.5GB or larger movie size).

When using SSH, it says to type 'help' to get a list of commands. If you do so, the entire command list is displayed to the screen immediately, which means I can only see up to a certain amount of commands as the rest are removed from the display buffer of my PuTTY window.

Other Thoughts: For those reviewers who say the device returns back to default configurations after a power loss, they did not properly save their configurations. There are two steps to have your configuration changes saved permanently - 1) (after making your changes), click Save at the bottom of the page. 2) Click "Configuration" at the top of the page, then click "Save and Activate".

The reason for the two step process is to allow you to make a lot of configuration changes before having them all applied to the AP (applying the changes usually means having the AP reboot itself). I was able to make all of the configuration changes I wanted, then have them all applied to the device at the same time, only requiring me to reboot the AP once. This was awesome! There was no having to wait for the AP to reboot itself over and over again as I made my changes.

If you are trying to extend the reach of your wireless network, and just need reliable wifi access then this AP will work great for you, and add some more advanced features to boot. I would not suggest it if you need higher wireless connection speeds and plan on doing large file transfers or large video streaming.

4 out of 5 eggsSSID must be broadcast or it won't connect!

Pros: It packs a lot of functionality into one unit and supports lots of security standards.

Cons: To work as a client, e.g. to enable a wired device to connect to a WiFi network, the wireless network MUST be broadcasting the network SSID! I expect the same is true for any other similar modes of operation, too. I've never encountered another device like it in this respect. It doesn't matter that you can manually enter the network name; it must be broadcast. I wasted hours figuring that one out, which brings me to the documentation.

At times, the docs are clear but more often it assumes the user knows more than is likely to be the case. Would it really be too much to include a diagram of how the different modes of operation (client, AP, etc.) enable various bits of gear to communicate or the advantages of one mode over another when there is overlap? Or have a large-print warning about the need to have the SSID broadcast?

The WAP also comes with a CD of SW but no up-front explanation of what it does or if you need it at all, which in my case I eventually determined I did not.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Stable

Pros: I have had some problems finding a router that would cover my entire building. This router covers a 12,000 sp ft building with no problems.

Cons: Programming takes a little time to figure out.

1 out of 5 eggsSecurity Risk

Pros: No pros

Cons: Unstable device presents a massive security risk

Other Thoughts: I've already submitted a review, which the good folks at Newegg chose to ignore...

When this AP loses power or the power is cycled, it reverts to default configuration, including NO admin password, static IP in the most obvious (but inconvenient) subnet, and OPEN SHARING of your WiFi network to anyone who wishes to connect to it. To the average home user this may not seem like a big deal - but believe me, if two dozen armed FBI agents kick your door down at 3 AM 'cause someone has been downloading illegal content over your unsecured wireless network, it WILL be a big deal!
