5 out of 5 eggsWorks perfectly everywhere

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Totally plug & play. Connected to router upstairs, back circuit. 2nd unit downstairs and will connect on front or back circuit. My Netgear WGR614 is probably dying - disconnects often, and only getting 12Mbs out of max 18 Mbs. With powerline attached, actually getting 20-22 Mbs - higher than I'm paying for. Have moved it around to various outlets for temp use, and always reconnects instantly. It's been flawless for me.

Cons: So far zero.

Other Thoughts: I have an old house with lousy wiring. My expectations were low, but bought it on sale, so . . . Results are such that I couldn't expect more from this product.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks, but not ideal

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: - Convenient
- Fast, easy setup

Cons: - Emits a high pitched sound

Other Thoughts: Bottom line is that this product works as you would expect. Simple setup with decent throughput. There is an issue where one of the units is emitting a high-pitched noise that can get very annoying. I contacted D-Link for an RMA and that entire process has been a nightmare. First, the tech forgot to enter my phone number, so when I went to enter my case number on the RMA site, it couldn't find it. I had to contact support again to get it corrected. Once it was corrected, I went through the RMA process to find out I need to pay shipping for the return as well as the new product. Finally, once I completed the RMA process and got the label to print, the image of the RMA bar code would not display. Turns out the image element was returning a 403 from D-Link's servers. Lesson learned - I'm going to keep the units and just squirrel the noisy one away somewhere it won't be noticed. In the future, I'll just avoid D-Link products - not for poor quality, but for the annoying RMA process.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Solution

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Was looking for solution to extend network connectivity in apartment. Bridging Wifi was not working consistently. So looked into Powerline. This is a great solution! Works flawlessly. Setup was simple as well. Great to extend wireline network reach where WIFI would otherwise be of low reach.

Cons: None to date.

4 out of 5 eggsworks Great

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: These have worked great connecting our living room to the office. I kinda wish it had gigabit ethernet but in reality, it's mostly used to allow for a remote access point, and for that it's more than enough. At the price it sure beats running cables.

Cons: No gigabit ethernet

Other Thoughts: I should keep some of these sets when I have to find a way to get internet run for friends,

5 out of 5 eggsI'm impressed

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: - Easy to set up
- Stable with good throughput

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I was a bit skeptical before setting up the powerline Ethernet network in my house. I was quickly won over by this pair of adapters as well as another pair of a different brand I purchased not long ago. These two pairs of adapters worked like a champ.

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Simple plug and play. I have one plugged in to the outlet next to my Verizon Fios router, and the other in a room off a sub panel in my house. The two detected each other in no time, and there was 0 latency. I pay for 50 megs down, and that is what I got!

Cons: none that I can see

Other Thoughts: I purchased this for a long run out to an out door barn(about 300 feet from my house) to configure a security camera, and WiFi for my use. Once the weather breaks I will give it a shot.

1 out of 5 eggsInsecure

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Small; non-polarized plug so the body can be rotated 180 degrees for better fit with other devices.

Cons: Vulnerable to the PLC DAK attack. Anyone who can get close enough to your house could insert themselves into your network via these.

Other Thoughts: The HomePlug AV standard on which these are based seems to be pretty solid, but D-Link took a shortcut with at least this model and gave them weak device access keys (DAKs). If you have any interest in infosec, do some searching for "plc dak attack". It's an interesting read. Here's a slightly simplified summary:

One thing every HomePlug AV device has is a Device Access Key (DAK). This is based on a password that is printed on the device. That password can be used to remotely control the device. The chipset manufacturer (Qualcomm Atheros) distributes an open source set of tools for working with these devices (open-plc-utils). It includes a reference implementation of a function that generates a DAK from the device's MAC address. The function's documentation specifically warns against device manufacturers naively using it to generate their DAKs, but D-Link (and at least one other manufacturer that I have personally experienced) did it anyway. It's pretty trivial for someone to plug any HomePlug AV network device in close enough to your house, sniff the MAC addresses of your devices, use the open-plc-utils package to generate their DAKs, and use the DAKs to join your devices to a new network with them in it. This effectively inserts them into your network.

What constitutes "close enough" to your house will depend on a lot of factors, but will likely be something between your house's external power outlets and your neighbor's house.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Easy setup, less than 5 minutes. My set up is on two different 15 amp circuits. Manufacturer recommends same circuit setup. I also have other devices plugged in to the duplex receptacles with no noticeable loss of performance.

Cons: None so far and I do not anticipate any.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you delete or disable old adapter settings. This device saved me the time and expense of running 80 feet of eithernet cable.
