2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: The Boxee Box itself is a nice product, but not the refurbs!

Cons: Just after 30 days, which I'm pretty sure is the manufacturer warranty that comes with a refurbished Boxee Box, I started having problems. Freezing on the grey load up screen constantly. Sometimes, I have to unplug everything from the back of the Boxee Box multiple times in order to get it to boot up. Honestly, I'm surprised it's still running, but to this day I still have freezing and boot up problems.

Purchased on 1/5/2013 from NewEgg.

1 out of 5 eggsBricked device and bad service

Pros: none

Cons: Either the Boxee sent to me was a brick or it doesn't pull an address from DHCP until it is fully set up. Boxee is plugged in and my router suggests that connectivity is going back and forth. According to a network scanner the device is not pulling an address though. The remote came in with a piece broken so it doesn't work. According to them no universl remote controls will work with it so I have to pay for shipping to send my Boxee back to Dlink in order to get it fixed.

They refuse to do just the remote even though that may be the entire issue.

5 out of 5 eggsBoxee Box

Pros: Strong favorable first impression. Scary capable streaming device. Found my media files (photo, videos and music) before I looked for them. So many apps, pay-per-view movies and TV show series I can't imagine I'll ever wade through them all. I suspect Linux OS (that's a big plus!)

Cons: I'll have to get along with the dinky combo keyboard/mouse/remote control thingie. It sets up easy & works great but it's sure tiny. The browser seems clunky. Bing for the default search?

Other Thoughts: Get One Now. In a league of it's own. Makes Rockyou Box look like an imitation.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat box but beware

Pros: Pros:
1.) Plays anything you can throw at it: DivX, Xvid, MP3, .jpg, .png. .mkv, .avi, .mpg, heck even .ISO files!
2.) The dual-sided remote is nifty for typing although its a bit tiny
3.) It does what it advertises (for the most part)

Cons: Cons (those are major enough to give it a 3.5 out of 5):

1.) No firmware updates. Boxee has pretty much abandoned this box and moved on to the next thing. I hear the "next" thing sucks as well.
2.) Installing apps is confusing and complicated, even for a techie like myself. I still haven't figured out how to install crackle for example. It "should" have come with the box, but I don't see it
3.) The box does need to be rebooted every 2 days or so, otherwise it runs into problems where no sound gets played. Minor inconvenience. Typical Linux junk.

Other Thoughts: Unlike other Roku or WD units out there, this is a local media first, online content second box by design.
This is exactly what I was looking for so it doesn't bother me as much.

1 out of 5 eggsStay Away

Pros: Two sided remote is cool, but after extend usage, it is easy to confuse top & bottom in the dark.

Cons: The Boxee Box can not handle large libraries of content. Stalls when trying to scan. Boxee has moved on to their new box, which isn't much better. The firmware hasn't been updated in a long time.

Other Thoughts: Got a Roku and set up a Plex Media Server. I am Rocking now. So easy with the Roku, my parents can use it.

1 out of 5 eggsDissapointed in Boxee and Newegg

Pros: When it works, it works well.

Cons: Item does not boot when cold. Needs to be unplugged to reset almost every time I turn it on just to get past the loading screen. Netflix has no audio when first launching anything and has to be restarted to get to work. When playing files off SD card, audio is sometimes not working and box has to be reset to work.

Other Thoughts: Bought for Christmas, on Jan 13, Newegg refuses to refund. Refuses to replace because I threw away the unlabeled non-retail black shipping box the unit came in.

I have had a WD TV Live box I bought through "the kindle retailer" for cheap. I always thought the Boxee was superior. I regret this purchase and wish I had purchased from a different distributor and had purchased the WD TV Live.

3 out of 5 eggsgood box but...

Pros: the controller is great, unofficial android app for controller works well (IDK about apple). as robust as VLC in media file playing, 1080p does great, easy to use.

Cons: no longer software updated, no hulu app, no flash update (HTML5 works fine)
(lack of flash update forbids me from watching Comedy Central, and Comcast's video of the ones I watch)

Other Thoughts: I have used my boxee for ~2.5 years and the windows client for 5 years (no longer supported also, but became open source, though still works great)
while it doesn't pull hulu, it still has its own library of tv shows which i pull shows off the networks page (CBS, FOX, etc,)

*flash update was not boxee or Dlinks fault. Intel decided to abandon the chipset

5 out of 5 eggsGreat price - check warranty

Pros: Great deal...and even better when on sale for $99.99 (like this purchase from the egg). Like other reviewer, I'm using this to stream from a WHS and it plays 1080p rips wonderfully.

Cons: Warranty? Newegg shows 1 year parts/labor on this device and I clarified this via newegg chat. Ironically, the sticker and the paperwork on the unit indicate that it is 30 days from D-Link. I purchased an extended warranty for my unit to avoid any near future issues.

Other Thoughts: I find the internet streaming capability of this unit very current based on available apps (Netflix/Hulu, etc.). With its two year age and the newer boxee device available I'm not sure how much future support will continue however.

But if you are primarily streaming multimedia on an internal home network, I think this device excels and is a great HTPC alternative for the price (if you have a server or NAS).

5 out of 5 eggsLike New

Pros: Works Perfectly, the box itself had no scratches and just a few minor marks on the front cover that wiped off cleaned, the controller came with a new battery and looked/worked as if new. Powered up the unit, a quick software update was completed automatically, signed in to my existing Boxee account, tied in the WHS, and in less than 60 minutes my entire library of 1000 movies was up and running. This is the 3rd Boxee Box since 2010 and it just works for me.......an idiot can setup/use these boxes....they work great! The price was <$100 - amazing technology for the price.....it runs everything.

Cons: Yes, the music program is not robust.....you need to be smarter than an idiot to get it running properly with the album covers. It is the only hassle for me with BB.
