2 out of 5 eggsWatch out for this design problem

This review is from: D-Link DGS-1024A Unmanaged 24-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Switch

Pros: Nice unit for the price. Gives a lot of ports for home use. Good speed.

Cons: Watch out for a unit with a sloping top. You will not be able to stack it with anything else unless this one is on top. You cannot stack them if you need more than 24 ports. You cannot sit anything on top. It will fall off. What a stupid design!

They put forward the idea of power savings. It MIGHT save a dollar in a century. The ports are flea power in the first place. The power to run the firmware to determine is a port is unused and adjust power based on cable length will make up for any "savings" based on transmit power. We are talking milliwatts here. Saving 1 milliwatt is not something you will ever notice. Just marketing hype!

Other Thoughts: Look at other vendors for a flat top which is stackable.

3 out of 5 eggsHome Use -- Plastic Shell

This review is from: D-Link DGS-1024A Unmanaged 24-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Switch

Pros: Small.

Cons: Plastic Shell.
Status lights separate from ports; for home desk top installation.

Other Thoughts: For home use, and desktop installation. If you have structure wiring where the switch is mounted remotely, look elsewhere -- in structue wiring, most prefer to have status lights ON the ports, or same panel as the ports (this switch has lights on the "front" and ports on the "back").
Plastic case is a sign of cheaper build - - metal is the preferred.
Power supply is adaptor "brick." "Business class" switchjes have built-in PS but metal box is larger.
As of 08/15/14, consider the Buffalo or Netis 24-port, metal case, built-in PS, both selling at about thes ame price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, lots of ports

This review is from: D-Link DGS-1024A Unmanaged 24-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Switch

Pros: I have been very happy with this switch. PIcked it up on a sale and it has been working without issue. I mainly use it for when I have a lan party but I put it up when not in use.

Cons: It does take a little bit a of tweaking to get the max performance out of the device but that not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: No issue's or problems so far.

5 out of 5 eggsGood switch

This review is from: D-Link DGS-1024A Unmanaged 24-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Switch

Pros: Sick of 4 port and 8 port switches chained. Got this and has done exactly what I hoped. I got it at a good price and I have had no issues with it.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsD-links solid 24/7/365

This review is from: D-Link DGS-1024A Unmanaged 24-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Switch

Pros: Had been running a DGS-2208 8-port switch for years, buying another to have an immediate spare in case of failure. Never had to use; switch ran 24/7/365; 1 hang in 3 years, easily fixed by cycling power. Given I was away from home (of course), even my non-tech wife had no trouble doing that.

Only trouble was, not enough ports. Granted, additional lines normally not used. Still, every now and again, would have to temporarily switch lines to gain access when needed.

Solution was to buy this 24 port switch. Definitely overkill for home, but allows me to plug in all my lines (ethernet portS in every room) at once, with plenty of spares for future growth, rather than max out by bridging two 8-port switches.

Even with 24 ports, still a small footprint. It's not rack mounted, instead on a shelf above my desk, so back ports essential, providing a tidy configuration.

No trouble streaming, heavy file transfers, downloading to several computers simultaneously. No family screams of anguish nor having to temporarily reconfigure a smaller switch.

Cons: Can't understand why the sloped top design. Prevents placing anything on top of the switch, unless that is the reason for the design.

No QOS config capability, but VOIP box connected directly to router, bypassing switch. All other computers, tv's, blu-rays, servers connected via switch with "guest" ports available.

Other Thoughts: Have never bothered to do any timing tests - family silence sufficient.

SLIGHTLY warm to touch, 92F at hottest point, but nothing alarming.

Solved problem of SMALL front port numbers by using labeler to make labels attached vertical to top above each set of 2 lights providing info on what attached. Sufficient to see at a glace what is connected and identify any problems. Standard green Gb, yellow Mb speed light notation.

Expect to be using this switch for YEARS, 24/7, without problems. Really is plug in, connect, forget.

5 out of 5 eggsUnmanaged Done Right!

This review is from: D-Link DGS-1024A Unmanaged 24-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Switch

Pros: Plug and play - the end. Very little heat generated. It just works!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Numbers could be a little larger in the front. I like that the cables connect in the back of the device making the numbers on the front a little easier to read. Price was also excellent. Looking forward to many years of use.
