5 out of 5 eggsDoes exactly what it is supposed to.

This review is from: D-Link GO-SW-8GE 8-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Metal Desktop Switch

Pros: This switch is very tiny. It takes up as little space as possible for an 8-Port switch. I don't think you could make it any smaller.'
Transfer speeds were right at gigabit, even with multiple transfers happening at the same time. Setup was easy, just like any other unmanaged switch it is entirely plug and play. Just plug the cables in and go.

It does get a little warm during use, but the metal case helps with cooling, and it doesn't get hot, just a little warm.

Cons: The power port on the side is a little annoying, but really with as small as this switch is I can't complain about it too much. Adding the port to the back would have probably increase the size of the switch just as much as having the cord sticking out the side.

Other Thoughts: This switch runs of 5v/1A power. If that sounds familiar that is because it is what most phone chargers use. I think D-Link missed a big opportunity here. They should have just had a micro-usb power port instead of the old style round power port. So any USB phone charger would power this switch. And if you are like me, and have one of those surge protectors with the built in USB charger, I could plug this switch into one of the USB ports on the surge protector. This would leave an A/C outlet on the surge protector open for other things.

4 out of 5 eggsgood switch if you can overlook the power socket on the side

This review is from: D-Link GO-SW-8GE 8-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Metal Desktop Switch

Pros: - inexpensive
- metal case
- different led colors to show link speed
- compact (only as wide as 8 ethernet ports)
- right-angle power plug to reduce inconvenience of power socket location

Cons: - power socket on side of case is unconventional and marginally increases footprint
- light weight causes the switch to slide around

the compact size makes the switch light-weight (though somewhat offset by the metal case). this combined with the pull of the ethernet cables in the back ports cause the switch to tilt up and slide backwards.

Other Thoughts: - lights on front, ports on back

i include the light & port layout as "other" because for some people it's personal preference and sometimes it just depends on the use-case (on a desk vs in a rack).

i didn't realize how compact the switch was until i unboxed it. putting the power socket on the side doesn't reduce the switches footprint (you still have the right-angle power plug and cord), but does reduce the physical size of the switch (and required materials: metal case, pcb, etc) so i can understand the layout.

for my application i won't be personally using it nor able to monitor it, and to head off unfounded user accusations (eg "the network isn't working; it must be the new switch"), so i stress tested it by having two laptops communicate bidirectionally at full speed (900 Mbits/sec TCP streams), rotating through all 8 ports over a 24-hour period, and the switch passed fine and barely got warm.

3 out of 5 eggsdlink 8 prt switch

This review is from: D-Link GO-SW-8GE 8-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Metal Desktop Switch

Pros: very compact, made of metal, silent

Cons: Failed just short of 2 years. No matter where I plug into my system... at end of line, in between even straight into the cable router... my entire network can not connect to internet. Unfortunately past warranty

Other Thoughts: good thing I bought for $25 and not $60

5 out of 5 eggsLow Price...Great Product

This review is from: D-Link GO-SW-8GE 8-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Metal Desktop Switch

Pros: It's an unmanaged switch...It works...Properly detects speeds...Metal construction...Great price.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Please everybody stop complaining about the power connection being on the side. Look at the provided pics. It is not hidden. That's what they made cable ties for. If it bothers you that much, tie the power cable to the network cable closest to it and it will tuck away nicely.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after a year and a half

This review is from: D-Link GO-SW-8GE 8-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Metal Desktop Switch

Pros: Solid metal seemed sturdy while it lasted.

Cons: Warranty replacement is a joke they want you to send in everything that came with it including the quick install guide which they charge you $5 for if you don't send it back. Who keeps instructions for a dumb switch... Plug it in and done? LAST D-LINK product I will ever purchase between shipping and the cost of the manual I can almost buy another manufacturers switch and not have to deal with D-Link

Other Thoughts: Sorry D-Link you are a Joke! Warning to anyone buying D-Link products make sure to keep everything mounting brackets, screws, manuals, CDs. KEEP EVERYTHING!

1 out of 5 eggsDid not work

This review is from: D-Link GO-SW-8GE 8-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Metal Desktop Switch

Pros: Small, sturdy feeling metal case.

Cons: Power port on the SIDE of all things...
Mine simply did not work; the lights come on in the normal way, but none of the connected devices (printers, computers) could see each other on the network.

Other Thoughts: I have had good luck with D-Link in the past, so I anticipate that I will have better luck with a replacement. I have started the RMA process, and will update this review if the new one behaves better.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: D-Link GO-SW-8GE 8-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Metal Desktop Switch

Pros: Never tested speeds but it does what I need.

Cons: Power is on side, so I took off one star, should have been on the back.
