4 out of 5 eggsD-Link GO-SW-8GE Smart 8-Port Gigabit Metal Desktop Switch

Pros: Before I begin my review on this product, let me set the record straight on something. NewEgg DOES NOT PAY their Eggxpert Reviewers ANY MONEY for a review (GOOD OR BAD - ON ANY PRODUCT)!!! When they 1st asked me to become a reviewer, they told me that I could post ANY TYPE of review that I wanted to, either GOOD OR BAD! The only thing that they asked me to do was to be honest in my review, which I try to be. Now that this is finished, let's start...

Someone once said that "Good things come in small packages" and while this is definitely true here, there are NO PRIZE WINNING Bells and Whistles to be made with this item. I do like the fact that:

+ 1. It's small.

+ 2. It's a GigaByte Switch.

+ 3. It has 8 Ports.

+ 4. Supports Jumbo Frames. More on this later below...

+ 5. The box is made of Metal, NOT PLASTIC.

Cons: I'll be the first to admit that my list of CONS are really more like personal preferences, but I look at it like this. I've been in the PC Field since the 70's (in one form or another) and have performed a number of different jobs from Programmer, Web Designer, Custom PC Builder, and many others. From ALL this time (and the many jobs I've had) I know WHAT I like AND WHAT I don't. I also know what works and what doesn't. Trust me, as time goes along you'll develop your own personal likes and dislikes to.

Things about this switch that I don't like:

- 1. It uses a Power Brick (Wall Wart) and I hate them with a passion!!!

- 2. It has the Power Connection on the side. Come on... Really??? How difficult (OR expensive) would it have been to design this to have the Connection on the back?

Other Thoughts: So far I've tested about 6 switches both this year and last year and I can say that this switch is about ON PAR with ALL the other GigaByte Switches I've tested. There are NO Bells and Whistles here to find, nothing to set this one apart from the others as far as performance goes. While it has some nice features, it still has it's CONS, at least as far as I'm concerned. The final choice on whether to purchase this is yours to make, I can ONLY give you my final opinions and recommendations. I just hope they help.

ONE FINAL NOTE: There are going to be those "CERTAIN PEOPLE" out there who will have NO IDEA how to check (OR EVEN ACTIVATE) the Jumbo Frames Feature for this switch so I will TRY and explain it to you all...

1. Go to START.

2. Go to CONTROL PANEL.

3. Go to SYSTEM.

4. Go to DEVICE MANAGER.

5. DOUBLE-CLICK on NETWORK ADAPTERS.

6. Pick your NETWORK ADAPTER and RIGHT-CLICK on it and choose PROPERTIES.

7. Choose the ADVANCED TAB and Scroll Down until you see JUMBO FRAMES on the left.

8. Once you've found it, CLICK on JUMBO FRAMES and set the VALUE to 9KB MTU.

9. Click on OK then close everything and you're done...

That's ALL there is to it. Hope this helps...

Overall, I like this switch but because of the WALL WART Power Adapter AND the SIDE MOUNTED CONNECTION I CANNOT give this switch 5 EGGS. There are going to be certain users out there (because of their PC Setups) that will find this switch to be less "USER FRIENDLY" than others out there on the market. For myself, when I setup a PC Desk (for myself OR even a customer) I want ALL my wires to be hidden and unseen. I appreciate this and so do my customers. What can I say, I'm picky...

It's too bad that the Engineers don't ask for input from the users BEFORE they design a product. They'd have a lot fewer duds IF they did...

5 out of 5 eggsJust right

Pros: It's small, unobtrusive, perfectly functional, and does exactly what it needs to do without fuss. Even the LED's aren't too bright.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I needed extra ports and the 4 on my router were overfull. I now have this and three other cables to the router and then 5 more to the switch.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks very well...hope it lasts

Pros: I use this box in my home office to connect my iMac and Windows XP box to each other so I can move large files around. File transfer is much faster now. I have tested the connection with iperf, and it reports a consistent 971 Mbps, which is about as good as you can get from Gig-E. File transfers are much faster now.

The switch is easy to use right out of the box. Just plug 'n play. The lights on the front of the unit are easy to see and the light color tells you the connection speed.

Cons: The side-mounting plug is a bit odd, but not a deal-breaker.

Other Thoughts: I hope this thing lasts. The worry I have about such an inexpensive piece of equipment is that it might not last a long time. We'll see.

Pros: all my computers connected at gigabit speed no problems. simply plug in, plug in your computers and router, and go!

Cons: might be a cable issue, but i simply CANNOT get my cablemodem/router (time warner gigabit modem/router) to connect at gigabit speeds. same cable im using to connect the modem to the switch i used to connect MY pc to the TWC modem, and i got a gigabit link no problem.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: cheap

Cons: Used 1 month, unplugged 2 months, now doesn't work. Total junk. Always have had problems with D-Link stuff, returned stuff years ago, quit buying their stuff, thought maybe they had improved over the last decade or so, so tried again due to price. Waste of $20 I got this for on sale.
