5 out of 5 eggsRefurb D-Link DIR-855

Pros: I love this little box. It's really reliable and, the best part, it has great range. Unlike D-Link's two other Xtreme N routers, it's antennas stand upright and don't fall over. The only downside is that it doesn't like Internet Explorer 11, but I have an older Toshiba M series notebook that still has Vista and IE8 so after I'd done the preliminary setup on my desktop on Win 7and gone through the basics, I switched to a wireless connection on the Toshiba and enabled the Guest network & port forwards to said desktop. For the huge price of $39.99, it's DEFINITELY worth the expense.

Cons: Doesn't like IE11. It's like the boxes you have to click to get to the Guest network are just not there. Did two weeks without a reboot. Doesn't have a power button - Grrrr

Other Thoughts: If these come back in stock, BUY ONE.

Pros: Good range when working

Cons: Had to reboot it at least once a day. Very annoying and since it is so unreliable I had to remove it and go back to an old TPLink router which works OK with having to boot occasionally.

Other Thoughts: Since this was a reworked router, I guess I bought someone else's problem. Should have known better.

Should have requested an RMA but I guess I might be too late.

4 out of 5 eggsGood. not great

Pros: Fairly cheap, definitely reliable enough, and a major upgrade over my previous router. Can connect a network printer or NAS, but I haven't done so yet.

Cons: The range is sub-standard. I expected with 3 antennas and dual band capability to see my range increase over an aging N120, but to my chagrin it remained the same, or may have become marginally worse.

My cell phone (ZTE Force) does not seem to stay connected with this router, though between the 4 pcs, 2 tablets, 3 game systems, streaming box, my wife's cell, and those of guests it all seems to be my phone there, so I can't really knock it there.

Other Thoughts: Overall it's been great for my needs, it's got a strong enough signal that I can connect to my network anywhere in the house, the garage, or most of the yard. it gets spotty near the edge of my property.

I haven't had to reset the router since purchase, which is a plus in my book.

5 out of 5 eggsRock solid, nice features, most stable router to date

Pros: - 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11n support
- Ubicom CPU (highly effective QoS)
- effective albeit proprietary firmware
- OLED status screen (a bit gimmicky, but a nice touch)
- decently long power cord
- very few marks, like-new condition for refurb
- heavy feeling (unlike previous Buffalo WZR-HP-300GN) makes it seem solid
- gigabit Ethernet
- came with every wire, accessory, disc
- 2.4/5GHz works flawlessly, ZERO connection drops, great throughput
- Ethernet works flawlessly
- purchased from NeweggFlash for $30 (free shipping), absolute steal

Cons: - five year old model and is officially end-of-life'd (EOL)
- no dd-wrt support (because of Ubicom)
- what is the latest firmware (because of EOL, hard to get firmware because website links are removed)
- three 3dbi antennas (low end)
- looks dated (but who cares)
- 5GHz range may be lackluster compared to today's N devices because more is known about N 5GHz than when this device came to be

Other Thoughts: My router came with firmware version 1.0. It was able to find 1.12 via its pre-configured update check. I see no reason to move beyond (1.26NA appears to be latest). This router sold for $380 when it was bleeding edge five years ago. It represented a level of router that was out of touch of the general consumer. It was built as a premium product. 802.11AC routers were considered but require all new adapters or dongles. All devices are at the N level, so I am fine with an N router. Maybe in three years I'll move to AC.

I may have taken a chance with a refurb router. For the last month, I've had the fastest and most stable connection within my network ever. Very pleased with the purchase.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Bad Overall

Pros: Gibabit ports, Xtreme N with USB SharePoint for printer.

Cons: Very weak signal!

Other Thoughts: I have an old Buffalo N router that needs replacing. I was very happy with the Buffalo router but it's 4 years old now and it needs rebooted at least once a week. I was thinking about getting another Buffalo router but when I saw this one I convinced myself D-Link is a good brand. I had them before and they were good to me, boy I was wrong.

The unit has a very weak signal even with the the 5GHz, I get around 35% signal strength and the adapter is directly above where the unit is placed (basically 2nd floor). The Buffalo router I had at 2.4GHz I get about a70% signal strength on the same adapter. The farthest computer I have could barley get to 40%. The unit also keeps losing the internet connections to the modem, I've had to reboot it almost everyday.

I usually have no issues with buying refurbished units but this one is either wasn't checked properly or there is something physically broken in the unit so buyer beware!

1 out of 5 eggsD-Link DIR-855/RE Xtreme

Pros: Nice design :)

Cons: Weak signal. Bad coverage.

Other Thoughts: Nicely designed piece of hardware that is garbage in real life!
Purchased it to replace Linksys WRT54G. However, this D-Link model has weaker signal and worst coverage that an old Linksys. On top of that, it goes on and off every 2-3 days and needs to be restarted. I am typing this review twice because I had to restart the router.
