5 out of 5 eggsDHP-601AV Gigabit Starter Kit

This review is from: D-Link DHP-601AV PowerLine AV2 600 Gigabit Starter Kit Up to 600Mbps

Pros: 1. Easy Set-Up
2. Small Footprint
3. Just works

Bought this setup and used with 2 5-Port un-managed switches. Easy to setup simply plugged in the cable from my router to the adapter upstairs and one downstairs in the family room. both on same`sh side of the home.
We have a busy household with PS3/PS4, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xb1, 2 ipads, 2 iphones, 3 laptops, desktop , treadmill and smart TV. Most of the stuff we ran wireless in the past all now hard wired and running great!
I have no trouble playing on Xbox Live with others streaming from Hulu/Netflix/Amuhzon (You figure it out)
HD videos buffer almost instantly and speed is much faster than the wireless setup was in the past.
I did not test data speeds for file transfer but I have easily streamed HD videos from anywhere on the network and large downloads of 18GB or more run seamlessly.
I strongly recommend giving this a try before spending time and money trying to upgrade to a newer wireless standard with the same problems that plagued previous wifi standards.

*Make certain this goes directly into the wall do not use a power strip etc.

Cons: 1. Pricey for what it is
2. Might not work in your home depending on wiring and network infrastructure ?

4 out of 5 eggsGood Product

This review is from: D-Link DHP-601AV PowerLine AV2 600 Gigabit Starter Kit Up to 600Mbps

Pros: This is a good product. Just plug and play. But speeds is low. i may be getting around 3-4 mbps. Anyway better than my wifi smart tv streaming videos alone. I have LG 55LM8600.

Cons: power consumption. Less than 2 months of ownership. so not sure of the reliability

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than Expected

This review is from: D-Link DHP-601AV PowerLine AV2 600 Gigabit Starter Kit Up to 600Mbps

Pros: Easiest setup ever. Plug one in next to the router, plug in another next to the TV, connect the Cat5 cables, and it works instantly. The directions instruct you to hit the black button on the lower side of each device to connect, but I did not find that necessary. No need to put in the network password. Setup could not be easier.

Cons: I paid $70 on sale, and would purchase another pair for the other TVs in the house if the sale was still on. Much more reliable in comparison to WIFI. 3500 SF house, with the router more than 100 feet from the TV. Followed the recommendation to use an outlet on either end that was free of other plugs.

Other Thoughts: Spent a bunch on router after router and range extender after range extender and cable modem after cable modem until I put this device into play, and now just enjoy watching Netflix without interruption. Very occasionally, I will need to reboot the router.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid D-Link PowerLine Adapters

This review is from: D-Link DHP-601AV PowerLine AV2 600 Gigabit Starter Kit Up to 600Mbps

Pros: Didn't catch on fire?

Cons: Worse performance than my Gen 1 PowerLine AV adapters that are several years old. Could not get above a 20mbit connection unless I had them directly in the same wall outlet.

Tested with Iperf and with Lan Speed Test; In the same configuration I used with my old first generation (AV1) adapters, which achieved 50-70mbit and I could get no better than 15mbit.

Other Thoughts: My old adapters will literally (yes literally) work from any two wall plugs in my 3 story house. The measured speed ranged from 50 to 70mbit depending on if my AC or electric heater is on.

These adapters will only work on about 1/3rd of my outlets, they are twice as large as my old ones, and get very hot.

And when they do function, it is at unacceptable speeds.

I purchased these because I thought they would be a significant upgrade to what I had before, but instead I find they are worse.

Manufacturer Response:

We value your input and appreciate the feedback you gave us. We are sorry to hear that the DHP-601AV did not meet your expectations. Please make sure that your adapters are not plugged into any power strip or surge protector as this will negatively impact it's performance. Also, the power adapter might not function properly if it is plugged in a power outlet that is near high power consuming appliances. In the future do not hesitate to contact D-Link technical support to solve your problems. Usually an agent will be able to diagnose the problem and will guide you through the solution process. We thank you for choosing D-Link.

2 out of 5 eggsDon't bother

This review is from: D-Link DHP-601AV PowerLine AV2 600 Gigabit Starter Kit Up to 600Mbps

Pros: Easy "plug-and-play" installation. One touch button to encrypt traffic after you plug them in. Status LED displays connection quality. Red="Good", Amber=Better, Green=Best. That's what the manual says, really.

Cons: Doesn't perform as advertised (your experience may vary), even when they are installed on the same electrical circuit. Very Inconsistent and "stuttering" speeds. I have no concrete evidence, but it "felt" like it was operating in half-duplex. While the unit stayed paired and connected to the other one throughout, at the higher layer it frequently caused dropped TCP connections resulting in a very frustrating end user experience. Nearly unusable across circuits. Internet speed tests varied mid-test, ranging from 25-45Mbps downstream, the upstream tests never completed (??). Wired ethernet and Wi-Fi yields 56Mbps downstream, 5.5Mbps upstream. Wireless performs much better, much more consistently.

Other Thoughts: As with anything like this, the condition of your home wiring, wire length, and if the pair are on the same circuit or not will have a huge impact on how well these work. My home was build in the mid-90s and they don't work well at all. They may be subject to interference from noisy electrical loads (remember watching analog TV back in the day when someone turned on a hair dryer or other noisy electrical load?)

I purchased these, taking a chance that they would perform better than wireless for large file transfers between PCs and reduce latency for gaming. That is not the case. I would not recommend any product from any manufacturer utilizing this technology.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the feedback and value it greatly. We are sorry to hear that the speeds you experienced did not meet your expectations. Please note specific factors which may reduce your effective speeds are power fluctuations EM interference from induction motors such as refrigerators, washer/dryer, microwaves, hair dryers, etc. and poor grounding. Please make sure that the DHP-601AV is placed away from these factors for you to receive a more secure signal. If your problem persists perhaps D-Link technical support can solve your issue. Contact them at We thank you for choosing D-Link.
