5 out of 5 eggsYup, it works

Pros: Pretty simple setup if you've ever messed with wireless router configs before. Nothing new here. Performance is spectacular, range is very good even on the 5band.

Covers a two story, 3500fsf home with no dead spots.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Paired with an Asus PCE-ac68 and the combo works like a charm. Very strong connection and very high and sustained speeds.

4 out of 5 eggsCertainly has DHCP issues. Can't configure to my liking

Pros: D-link is certainly my favorite and I use many of their products. I bought this to replace my stable and working DIR-655 router. I waited for D-link to release AC1900 router in US. I upgraded the firmware to the latest to avoid any known issues. I was hoping for an easy setup but I had to go through a lot of trouble setting up this router. First of all, I kept SSID same for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands – bad idea. The devices were constantly getting connected and disconnected. Even after I kept SSID different, the problem continued. I initially thought the issue was only with 2.4GHz connections, I tried all the standard stuff like using the unused (by neighbors) channel, only 20Mhz channel width etc. I tried to match the configuration same as my DIR-655 but nothing really helped. I opened a case with D-link but they didn’t really have much to add other than move my wireless phone away from my router. The phone has always been there with DIR-655. Upon further investigation, I noticed that despite my IP reservation, router was assigning same IP address to other device!!! WHAT?? I assumed that connection and disconnection may have to do with DHCP issues with the router. So I decided to factory reset the whole thing one more time and keep only the basic setup i.e. SSID for each band and admin password setting. I did not reserve any IPs this time. Sure enough, everything since then i.e. almost a week now has been working fine. I hope D-link recognizes the DHCP issues and resolves it. I don’t why D-link tends to remove some good features from older to newer products. I have seen such things with other products too. My DIR-880L is working really well now but the configuration is not up-to my liking.
DIR-655 features that I miss in this router:
1) WPS setup through Web page (not using the physical button).
2) Connection rate and Status of clients connected to the router
3) Access Control to restrict wifi connection during scheduled hours (very useful for parents)
4) Syslog, I should be able to see system log on the admin screen itself. It had a lot of good information in DIR-655 to identify issues quickly.

Cons: DHCP issues.

Other Thoughts: D-link usually listens to their customers and fixes the issues. So I am hoping they will quickly incorporate those missing features I mentioned along with DHCP issues.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: Very easy to set up this router. The range on this router is amazing and it shows. My speeds are exceptional.

Cons: Nothing.

Other Thoughts: I was hesitating and looking for a new router for some time. My DIR-655 was starting to dropping its signal multiple times a day so I had to make a decision. I did some research and chose this one. My computer is wireless so speed and range was very important to me and this product doesn't disappoint. D-Link really did a great job on this router.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Stable

Pros: Stable operation. Easy to set up. Nice user interface. Strong signal.

Cons: No way to disable WPS.

Other Thoughts: This router has been operating reliably for me for over a month now. I mostly use the 5ghz band and have found that signal to be stronger than expected when traveling through walls. Through one 20 ga. steel wall and one 6 inch wood/gypsum board wall I get 5 bars and 520mbps.

I have the router in an unsecure location, and would like to disable WPS, but unfortunately there is no way to do that on this router.

5 out of 5 eggsOverall a great router

Pros: This thing is fast and the range is outstanding. My jaw dropped when I replaced my DIR-655. My desktop sits about 25 feet away with an old Rosewill WiFi card and I was only getting around 5-10mbps download speeds and equally shameful transfer speeds. I hooked up the DIR-880L and I was hitting 55mbps (advertised 50 from comcast).

So, aside from the speeds, the other things I love:
- Easy to setup
- Intuitive(ish) menu, as long as you weren't used to the old one
- USB 3.0 for an external hard drive (1 TB Seagate working great)
- Dual Band
- Works well with many clients connected on both bands including Hi Def IP cameras (DCS-2330L) recording to the external drive attached to the router

Cons: For whatever reason, the first session I had it hooked up it was power cycling (rebooting) EVERY 10 SECONDS and it was driving me mad. I cut the power; no go. What ended up fixing it was a factory reset with a paperclip. It was a little frustrating having to re-input my settings, but it's been working ever since.

Other Thoughts: My inconveniences are overshadowed by all the positive things about this product. Although I'm not as geeky as I used to be, this router hits a sweet spot with me because it's essentially plug and play but with options. There could be some better firmware in the future to satisfy (mostly) everyone but I'm already happy because it's working as advertised. Cheers!

4 out of 5 eggsHardware Good / Firmware needs work

Pros: The speeds that I am able to achieve with this router are quite good. I am, however, upgrading from a DIR-655 router that had been in service for years. This router does not experience any slowdowns in my families large user environment. We are in total six people with 3 desktops, 6 laptops, 4 iPads, 2 iPods, 2 iPhones, a NAS RAID unit, and a networked DVR security system. My network setup is the DIR-880L as the main router, a DIR-1008G switch for distribution to the hardwired devices, and the DIR-655 being used as an AP for the kids (different SSID).

Cons: The firmware is poor compared to the old DIR-655 firmware. The aesthetics are quite nice with the new graphics, however, it is difficult to find all of the options that I am used to and some are flat our missing. For example, I can create a schedule to restrict my kids devices from the internet, however, I cannot find the access control dialog to use the schedule, nor can I add a schedule to website filtering as a workaround. Even the schedule is a bit weird; since it is graphical it won't let me set a restricted time from 22:00-06:00, instead I have to use 06:00-22:00.

I can appreciate the visual polish that Dlink has put on the tired old interface, however, that doesn't make up for the missing features. I am hopeful that a firmware update is coming soon.

Other Thoughts: I am still giving this 4 stars as Dlink products have treated me well through the years. Anytime there has been a firmware issue it has been corrected. In the case of the DIR-880L it is only a question of when this will happen not if.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsBest router to date from D-Link, Even better than the DIR-868L..Which is just as Good!!!

Pros: Over all this router was a breeze to set up and was quickly online and at Internet speeds to spec. The new UI is pretty snappy on performance when navigating and nested features are easy to find. Those familiar with D-Link's current router web pages will find this fairly similar and easy to use. Just the look and some feel is different. I presume that D-Link is headed to a more less complex web page UI for users to use.

The wireless range from my initial testing is very good. I sat in my living room with my Mac Book Pro while the router was 20ft away down the hallway in the office and had full signal bars on 2.4Ghz. Same room testing and all wired results are for public review in the provided link below. Only issue I have is that it's hard for users to see what actually there wireless devices are connected at with the router. On current DIR series routers, we have a Wireless Status page that gives the device connection rates and signal percentages. This is not available on the 880L and it would be nice to have this feature added in for troubleshooting and diagnostic reasons. Knowing connection rates if very helpful.

The wireless range from my initial testing is very good. I sat in my living room with my Mac Book Pro while the router was 20ft away down the hallway in the office and had full signal bars on 2.4Ghz.

Gaming on XBL with 360 connected to a DIR-868L bridge to the DIR-880L last night was great. No major issues seen. I downloaded a 1.5Gb map pack which took longer than expected however it was a new release yesterday so others downloading it at the same time may have been effecting the download. I wasn't seeing much over 650KB when looking at the 5Ghz graph page on the 880L while this was going on. Gaming was great, no lag see accept for one which I believe that was service related. Over all was great gaming on a Bridged 5Ghz connection. The Bridge was at a 15ft distance with one wall in between the Bridge and Router.

Cons: Some features are missing or not longer supported:
Wireless device connection status and rates.
Wireless Security mode options, no selectable TPIK or AES only. I presume it's all automatic now.
Ping System Test

It would be nice to have wireless connection rates displayed on the router for troubleshooting and diagnostic help. It's nice to know what devices are connecting at with the router.

Other Thoughts: With the use of the Amply line router case, this router isn't the cylinder style case seen on previous modes. this is the slender Amplify line case and it seems D-Link has listened to some concerns about heat and cooling. The entire bottom case is perforated with air holes for cooling. I opened the top cover to find a large metal heat sink instead of composite ones. Thank you D-Link.

Please visit the D-Link forums for more information and help with this router model and others. Good Stuff D-Link.
