1 out of 5 eggsGigabit? NOT!! JUNK is more like it

Pros: none. connected the same as other devices and can only get 20mbps throughput. Would have given 0 eggs if it would let me.

Cons: gigabit speeds? not a chance. I can barely get 20mbps over this junk, but get the full 100mbps off the internet via wireless. They claim to be able to go up to 2gbps? BUNK!! Complete garbage.

Other Thoughts: No, I would not recommend this to other people. I've been a network engineer for a large networking company for many years. what this product claims and what it is capable of is complete nonsense. Never again.

These are going back as soon as I can get them boxed and back to UPS.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well for remote install of modem

Pros: - Seems to be stable with continuous use connecting my modem to router
- Tested speed at 90Mbps down and 10Mbps up (maximum for my ISP connection).
- Doesn't block the top plug when connectedt to the bottom of a standard wall socket.
- Included two 3-foot CAT5 cables.

Cons: - No pass through for power
- setup can be tricky if the connected devices are not cooperating (only a single debug light)

Other Thoughts: I had some issues connecting my router to my modem using this kit in between them. I found that initial setup works best when I got the router and modem working while they were directly connected, then moved the router to where I wanted it. When I first started testing with the router and modem already connected to the powerline kit, it was harder to troubleshoot issues. So far I've been able to watch SlingTV and do normal tasks without any hiccups.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I was looking for!

Pros: I now get my full 40Mbps down that I pay for to my desktop in my office. Was using N wireless before, and speedtest only showed about 25Mbps down. Router is in living room on ground level, office is in a bedroom upstairs. I also put one downstairs on my PS3. Can now stream HD from PC to PS3.

Cons: Size. If the top corners could be a little more rounded/smaller that would be nice. My surge protector cord angles at 45 degrees down, so it won't fit in the outlet above this. That was a possibility I was aware of when I bought this, so no egg off.

Other Thoughts: Was thinking of upgrading my wireless equipment or installing cat6 in the house. I think this was the best compromise. House was built in 1992. Glad I went this route. Speed of wired internet without the hassle of running cables. Wireless technology is progressing rapidly and I was tempted to spend 300-400 on a new router and wireless card for the pc. I am currently using 3 of these, one at the router on ground level, one upstairs at my pc, and one downstairs on my ps3. Can stream hd from pc to ps3 using ps3 media server.

2 out of 5 eggsThe built-in QoS is a JOKE! SERIOUSLY!

Pros: -plug and play
-fast. ~2.5x faster than previous 500mbps kit

Cons: The built-in QoS is a JOKE! While I'm able to get ~45MB/s for SMB transfers, other services become UNUSABLE if I initiate any large file transfer. Eg: get disconnected from online game, facebook messenger, dropbox. etc. open a new website in browser will alos get a timeout error. This problem can be solved if the software utility provides options to configure personalized QoS rule. But unfortunately it doesn't.

Other Thoughts: If you don't regularly eat up all the bandwidth of the kit then it may not be an issue.
But my goal for using powerline other than wireless solution is to provide better latency and bandwidth between my desktop and file server. I regularly do large file transfers so this is a huge issue for me.

1 out of 5 eggsThese are junk!

Pros: Fast when they work.

Cons: They seem to lose the connection over power line after a month. Then you have to disconnect them from power and let them cool down. Then they will work again when plugged in. I had them in a mixed environment with some Netgear AV500 and AV200 gear.

1 out of 5 eggsBlazing fast for the few seconds that it works

Pros: When it worked, I got speeds matching a direct connection into my router.

Cons: First thing I did when I set them up was run a speed test and they were blazing fast. Within about a minute when I tried to go to other sites, the internet connection was lost. It would restart for a minute then drop again. I tried swapping the adapters to different plugs; same problem. I thought maybe they needed a firmware update, so I went online and found a few download links with no instructions whatsoever. I tried to install the "PLC Utility Lite", but when I tried to start it, it either crashed or wouldn't detect the adapters. I tried a different D-Link powerline software program to no avail. The full manual that is downloadable online doesn't even mention the software.

The fact that the initial speeds are triple what I've gotten with other powerline adapters made it all the more disappointing when it wouldn't work.

An additional note - the full manual says the adapters are UL certified, but neither the box nor the adapters have the UL logo on them, so I'm skeptical as to whether they are actually UL listed.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the detailed feedback and want to thank you for the input. We are sorry to hear that you are running into issues with the product and want to apologize for the inconvenience. We recommend that you get in contact with our technical support team by calling them at 1-877-453-5465. Our agents will be able to troubleshoot with you and work with you to come up with a solution to the issues you are having. We hope to restore your faith in D-Link.

5 out of 5 eggsD-Link DHP-701AV HomePlug AV2 AV2000 MIMO Gigabit Powerline Starter Kit, up to 2000Mbps

Pros: THis is faster then my old dlink powerline adapter. My last i got only about 20-30 mbps down and 10 up. No im at 80 down and 30 up. People in apartments, might have different issues depending on how the electrical is run in the building, a MoCa box might be the best solution for folks in apts because you can utalize the coaxial cable rather then possible using shared electrical.

Cons: does not broadcast wireless
Can not password.

Other Thoughts: This unit is really fast not sure if its as fast as they claim, but still i can stream hd movies, game and play music with no problems what so ever.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks 1000 feet apart.

Pros: I have it set up at my Condo and there 1000 feet apart without issue. The firmware was up to date out of the box.

Cons: I wish they came in black.

Other Thoughts: The cat5 cable is grey, I would rather of had a white cable to go with a white box. Not going to take a egg for that tho but it's a suggestion.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great...even in two different buildings!

Pros: I bought this kit because I needed to provide network access to the apartment above an attached garage. All I had to do was plug in the components and then the network devices. I have had no issues with them and they are being used very heavily.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Well worth the money!!!
