3 out of 5 eggsLack of advanced features

Pros: Easy setup.

Cons: Lack of features-- no IP reservation renders this product useless in a professional office.

Other Thoughts: You get what you paid for. Will need to look for another AC1750 Wi-Fi Router with advanced features.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressed so far.

Pros: For a budget router (wait for a promo and get it for half price), this unit is pretty impressive. The wireless range covers my whole property , and the factory firmware is actually pretty decent. I've had no drops on either the 2.4 or 5GHz wireless bands, and wired ports are rock solid.

All of the standard configuration options are available, from blocking IPs to setting up NAT and static routes.

One thing that really impressed me was the ability to customize the DDNS host configuration. Most routers (every other one I have seen, actually) have a couple preconfigured DDNS hosts, most notably DynDNS. Unfortunately, DynDNS is now a paid service which makes it far less appealing than the dozens of free solutions out there, so being able to create a host configuration of your choice is huge.

As good as the factory firmware is, it is still extremely limited, but it can easily be upgraded to DD-WRT,and likely other 3rd party firmware. See Other for DD-WRT upgrade details.

Cons: Power cord is very short.

Interestingly, the "reset" button on the router doesn't completely reset the router to factory defaults. It resets the LAN settings and the admin password, but that is all I noticed. I suppose this is sufficient since the main reason for doing a reset would be to get back to a known management IP address and password.

This unit shipped with year-old firmware. Upgrading was simple, but shouldn't have been necessary. Oddly, the most recent firmware (version 1.04) could be installed from the router's upgrade option, but was not available for download from the dlink website.

When using the factory firmware, the admin session times out very quickly. Expect to be constantly logging back in..

Other Thoughts: Overall, I am quite pleased with this router, right out of the box, and after upgrading to dd-wrt, it's perfect.

Since upgrading to a 3rd party firmware is always a risky proposition, with the genuine possibility of ending up with a doorstop, I thought I would provide instructions:

Go to the dd-wrt web site, and search for this model number. Then download the "factory-to-ddwrt.img" image. Then on the router, select this file from the manual upgrade firmware option. The progress bar will proceed until 61% and will freeze. The connection will then timeout. Do not panic. This is because the factory firmware used the base LAN address range 192.168.0, while dd-wrt uses 192.168.1, by default. Simply release your DHCP address and renew it, then navigate to 192.168.1.1. Once connected, you will notice that the 2.4GHz antenna (ath0) is OFF and cannot be turned on. This is apparently a bug in either dd-wrt or the router that causes the MAC address for this interface to be set to all zeros. The issue can be easily resolved by enabling MAC Address cloning (Setup tab, then MAC Address Clone): click enable, then click the Get Current PC MAC Address button. I suppose you could also make up a MAC address, however this could be problematic if you don't know what you are doing.

Once you have experienced dd-wrt, you will never want to use another factory firmware again, but if you want to roll back, go do dlink's web site and download the firmware for this router, then use dd-wrt's upgrade firmware option to install it. Remember to reset your DHCP address like before.

2 out of 5 eggsHas issues with DHCP Reservation, even with the latest 1.04 firmware

Pros: Good value (AC1750) for the sale price I paid. The new UI certainly brings the router more up-to-date with the times, but may have introduced new issues (see below).

Cons: - The DHCP Reservation List feature was hard to find. I needed this feature so that I can keep the IP addresses of my webcams static, so that they can be mapped to external ports using port forwarding. You have to click on the list of connected devices, and then click on the Pencil icon (Edit) of each device to reserve the IP address for this device.
- The DHCP Reservation List feature does not work for wireless devices. I was able to edit and save the changes for LAN devices, but the router ignored my changes for wireless devices.
With this issue, the router is pretty much unusable for my needs, and I have not done any further testing.

Updating to the latest firmware (1.04) did not solve this issue.

Other Thoughts: I had very good experience with my D-Link DIR-655, but that router is getting old. I was hoping to replace it with the DIR-859, but with the problem above, it pretty much made the DIR-859 unusable for my needs. Unfortunately, I've waited too long before testing - otherwise, it would have gone back to newegg.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Router

Pros: -Gigabit Ethernet Ports

Cons: -Wifi is terrible
-Wifi is slow
-Updated firmware through router to 1.04, Support site does not list this firmware. Tons of issues with this firmware version. Wifi is even more unreliable and super slow.

Other Thoughts: I wish I could exchange this for a different one.

4 out of 5 eggsOK after a difficult setup

Pros: Blazing fast and appears stable

Cons: As an experienced user and tech geek, this gave a "no internet" error several times. It was delivered with an outdated firmware from May 2015 but was bought in Feb 2016. Tsk tsk.

It required several reboots to finally stay up and connected but once it did, it has been stable for 3 days.

It appears that there are fewer options for power users, but for the basic user it should suffice. .

Other Thoughts: Got this on a sale with a free AC wireless adapter for <$100. A great deal.

1 out of 5 eggsD-Link DIR-859 AC1750 Wireless Connectivity... Maybe!

Pros: Easy setup, good wireless when it works and LAN ports always functioning but I expect that any new product.

Cons: Used for less than 60 days. Wireless is worse than my Netgear router that I purchased 5 years ago and it was refurbished for a fourth the pricew. The reason I upgraded was because or coverage for our new home and the wireless speed upgrade. Now the wireless consistently drops even from a steaming TV 8 feet away from the router. When the signal comes back, it is as strong as ever. I just wish the product worked all the time. I will have to do something different. I am a network administrator and rely heavily on my wireless network at home. This was a bad choice.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the input as we really truly care about the comments and we want to apologize for the wireless issues you are experiencing with the router. Keep in mind that firmware updates usually address these type of issues. Make sure that you have upgraded to the latest firmware. In addition, you can always contact our technical support team for assistance. They can be reached anytime by calling 1-877-453-5465. Thank you for giving D-Link a chance.

2 out of 5 eggsIntermittent Internet connectivity hiccups ruined an otherwise good unit

Pros: High Gain Antennas supposedly help signal. I did notice a difference in usable range and link speed of a USB AC adapter (433mbps vs. 245mbps) when compared to my other AC1200 router that this was meant to replace.

Was easy to set up, came preconfigured with Wireless Security right out of the box and launched the Router Setup Wizard the first time I opened a web browser after installing the router.

The setup Interface has gotten an overhaul compared to older D-Link routers that I've used. This one is more minimalist and seems to be dumbed down compared to the older "black and orange" type interface that I've been so used to. However, all the options are there, just in different places.

This router also supports DD-WRT open source firmware.

Cons: The router would haphazardly disconnect me from the Internet for split second intervals, just long enough to boot me out of an online game, or kick me off remote RDP sessions. Checking the Internet Status in the Setup just after this happens does NOT reset the connection uptime counter for some reason. Monitoring the Internet Status screen when this occurs would result in the Green checkmark changing to a big red X, and a message of Internet connectivity being lost. HOWEVER, it goes back to a Green checkmark in about one second, and connectivity is restored. Very irritating. This unit shipped with 1.03 firmware and I immediately upgraded to the 1.04 firmware, so I have no idea of knowing if this issue occurred after the update, or if it was present in the 1.03 firmware as well.

The power cord is rather short, so if you plan on putting this unit on the top of a shelf that's taller than 5 feet or so, be prepared to use an extension cord.

There are no USB ports on this unit, so if you're looking for a router that can double as a print server or DLNA Media server, keep looking. I was aware of this before buying and based my decision on the fact that I never use that functionality anyway. My last couple of routers had the feature, so it was actually nice to see a router that omits it to keep the price down for those of us who don't want it.

Other Thoughts: I'd give this a well deserved 4 eggs if it weren't for the Internet dropping, 5 if it had a longer power cord and better setup interface. I tried configuring every setting I could think of (I work in IT so I know a bit about how these things work) and nothing I did would resolve the issue, short of flashing it with DD-WRT (which I didn't want to do as it might void the warranty).

This is going back to Newegg.

Manufacturer Response:

We thank you for the feedback as we really do appreciate it and we want to apologize for the connection issues you are experiencing with the router. 4 out of 5 eggsGreat AC1750 Router with Some Work

Pros: 3 Antennas and Supports DD-WRT. I purchased this router during the Black Friday 2015 sales, the price was unbeatable for an AC1750 router. I need that extra bandwidth to support in-house streaming.

Cons: The startup guide in the booklet was missing a very important step. I followed the instructions closely step by step but they didn't work. My router couldn't get any internet connection after all that cables and admin page setup. After some googling, it seems that simply unplugging the power cable from my modem is not enough, you must unplug the coaxial cable as well. (source: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=37680.0)

Other Thoughts: One important feature that makes me buy this router is that this router supports DD-WRT. If you plan on flashing it, beware that there is no turning back since the community does not have a revert-to-factory firmware at this point yet. The latest DD-WRT build can be found on http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=28.

Also another important point to note while using DD-WRT for this model is that you have to turn on the mac cloning feature to use the 2.4 ghz wireless. (source: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=995266)

5 out of 5 eggsAnother Hit for DLink!

Pros: Excellent Coverage, no dead spots, Has not skipped a beat since I installed it, which was a breeze!

Cons: The power cord needs to be longer. The DIR 825 that this unit replaced has a longer cord, just the right size.

Other Thoughts: After about 5yrs my DIR 825 started showing signs of age. I would have to reboot about twice a week. There were also dead spots for coverage for my media box downstairs, had to use a signal extender. Newegg had a sale on the DIR-859, Ive always had good service from D-link, so I jumped!. What a great move! I have no more dead spots, 4 media boxes stream without one hiccup!! Speed is excellent! With running 4media boxes, 3 laptops, 3 computers connected through power adapters, this bad boy is a workhorse!!!! I'm happy! Dlink just make the cord a wee bit longer. Thanks

5 out of 5 eggsWorking fine

Pros: No issues with setup. GUI was intuitive enough to do basic configurations.
Dual band is nice.
Range was much better than my old D-Link and Cisco systems.
This router replaced two in my home thanks to the extended range.
Purchased during Black Friday sales 2015 which allowed me to take a chance on a extend range AP. So far so good.

Cons: None so far.
