1 out of 5 eggsPoor wired & wireless speeds, buggy interface

Pros: Design is cool, screw hole mount on the back is convenient for placement.

Cons: Speeds are terrible, I can't stream any video without constant choppiness. Power cycling the router fixes the issue temporarily, but it always returns. The interface firmware is extremely slow and buggy. UI is not intuitive, but I can live with that. Saving any change in setting causes it to reboot, which takes forever. Today I added a port forwarding rule and the system completely crashed, reverting to default settings. Now I have to redo all my static devices and port forwarding. That was the last straw. I bought this with the hope it would be the next generation of consumer router rivaling the C7, but I'm very disappointed.

Other Thoughts: Because I'm not eligible for an RMA, I'm holding out for a firmware improvement in the near future.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router for the Ordinary Person

Pros: -Set-up is simple
-Good "default" features
-Powerful router that gets the job done (no more laggy Netflix streaming!)
-Stylish

Cons: -This router is truly meant for the average user with limited technical knowledge. The number of settings that you can configure from the factory installed firmware is very limited.

Other Thoughts: This product is great for the average user that wants a fast, powerful, and ballin' router, but if you want to thoroughly customize the inner workings of your network and don't want to have to install your own firmware, then I would consider a different router for the task.

2 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely fantastic when it works, which is less than half the time

Pros: Great range, super fast when it's working

Cons: - Drops connection a lot
- Cant handle any extra wifi connections when streaming netflix. Other new (and older, including a refurbed linksys e1200 can handle it just fine, so its not an unreasonable expectation).
- Really buggy firmware, cant configure very well, and what you can configure is slow and arduous to change
- No logs, requires a logging server.

Other Thoughts: Wouldn't recommend this at all. Feels like 100% of the problems could be resolved with a firmware upgrade, but I can't really just deal with it until it's fixed (if it ever is) so I've moved on. The issues persist when using it as an additional AP instead of as a full router, so I cant even use it for that. Really disappointed, specifically waited for this to come out before grabbing a new router because I've had good luck with the DIR series before.

1 out of 5 eggsDropping Internet and Buggy Software

Pros: Wi-Fi Range and quality were good
Light indicator was easy to read on front
Router vs AP switch on back of the unit is handy
82.7MB/s or 661.6Mb/s read speed on hard wire
48.5MB/s or 388Mb/s write speed on hard wire
Network congestion was handled very well with the routers dual processor

Cons: Configuring the unit for a client at my home before deploying to site, noticed my internet was dropping randomly for small 20 second intervals every couple of hours...ran a packet test and was seeing packet loss to google.com shortly after seeing packet loss to the new router, the behavior is mirrored with an orange light on the front of the router...went into the config page to view the log files only to find the log files are not stored on the router. Instead they force you to enable logging to a syslog server which I enabled to the location of my PC however there is no field to enter a user or pass to authenticate write permissions for the unit to write the actual log files...I tried setting the location to be the router which saved but no where in the settings could I find a place to see the log files (weird). It also allows you to email the log files which I setup but it only sends when "full" which I have no idea when the log files get full so that is not helpful. There is an option to email on a schedule..but the only option for schedule is "Always Enable" so that's not a schedule its just always on but I have yet to receive an email of the log files presumably cause there not full? So I cant even review why the unit is dropping LAN and WAN traffic randomly. I have since hooked my ASUS back up and am back up running smoothly, will see if there's a firmware update and will try that, but otherwise I am at a loss.

Other Thoughts: Performance and specs are there, but firmware is pretty buggy and lacking settings (no vpn support either)
not sure if anyone else is experiencing the orange light randomly every couple hours for small increments but I pretty much left the unit the same right out of the box, the only change I made was updating the 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 network scheme to a 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0 scheme other than that it's pretty much stock settings...also this unit needs to store it's own logs or at least update the GUI to allow username/pass input to store them through a network path
Model : DIR-879
Hardware version : A1
Firmware Version : 1.01

1 out of 5 eggsToo stress out

Pros: Able to do online gaming and was able to extend to a room on the second floor.

Cons: Disconnecting one of the computers in my parent's house. Settings wouldn't recognize my Internet Provider. Playing with the router's settings, changing each and every household's computer network settings, and adding a wireless extender isn't helping. My old router was able to connect the Internet with no issue dealing with the settings.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsUHG! was so excited and now... not so much

Pros: I've always been a Cisco or Linksys guy but went with this new shiny DLink. It is cool, easy to set up and so easy it was confusing because I just wanted a simple interface to plug my stuff in. Was super fast right out of the box, but then I connected wifi devices to it.

Cons: Runs super hot all the time. Can not stream Netflix and have 3 phones connected to it without it dropping signal. Continually drops the wifi signal and drives everyone mad!

Other Thoughts: So disappointed right now and disgusted. I want a super cool fast wifi router and I don't think I've found it yet. Sad that I'm out $150 and only had it a month.

Manufacturer Response:

We thank you for the input you have provided and we want to apologize for the connection issues you are experiencing with the router. We suggest that you perform a factory reset on the router and then upgrade to the latest firmware found on www.support.dlink.com. If that does not resolve your issues then please give us a call at 1-877-453-5465 so one of our technical support agents may help you. Thank you for giving D-Lin a chance.

4 out of 5 eggsFriendly UI and Easy to Setup

Pros: - Comes with a built-in setup wizard making it easy for first-time use or if you ever reset it and want to quickly reconfigure your settings
- Very user-friendly web interface making it easy to customize settings
- You can change the power setting between low, medium and high

Cons:
- The router will restart if you change just one setting (takes 30 seconds, 90 seconds for other settings). It would be nice to be able to change as many things as you want and THEN have it restart and apply the changes
- Doesn't have a lot of customization options right now, but that's coming from someone who loves to change every little thing he can get his hands on

Other Thoughts: - The casing does get warm, not hot or anything like that, just warm

Overall an excellent home router based on the features it comes with and its performance and cost. I would recommend it for home use with streaming/gaming in mind. If you aren't picky about being able to change every little setting, want something fast and easy to setup, and just like to "set it and forget it", this is the router for you.

--- UPDATE 1 ---
I've had it up and running for 3 weeks now and still love it. I haven't run into any issues with it so far and haven't had any problems connecting devices to it (Samsung Galaxy Note II, SurfacePro, MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone). I haven't used the App yet so that will probably be in the next update. An excellent product if you need something fast, powerful and reliable!

5 out of 5 eggsThis thing is amazing..

Pros: -Easy Setup, worked out of the box.
-Extremely fast, getting nearly the full speed of my modem to my wireless device, my modem (CM500-100NAS) is only good for 686 Mbps. With my ASUS 1900 wifi adapter on my computer, I'm getting data transfer rates from 526-702 Mbps on the 5.0 Ghz side of the wifi.
-My Ookla speed test went from around 30 Mbps on wifi to 90 Mbps! When comcast only guarantees 70 Mbps for my current plan.
-Doubled the speed of my ping time and upload speed
-The dull light in the front is not too bright thankfully, very nice to see in the dark when I pass by the living room.
-Great price per performance
-Nice browser for router management, able to fix everything to my liking, even port forwarding.

Cons: -The color could be different, but I understand it makes the product stand out. Probably the same affect Noctua computer fans go for with their gross brown color.

Other Thoughts: -The router is light, could be a pro or con, it will tip backwards if the cables behind it are pulling too much. I would prefer it to be heavier for this reason, not like I'll be moving it much now that it's in place.
-Router takes time to boot before you can connect to the browser and manage the device, so don't panic like I did.
-There's an app to help you set it up in the beginning if that's what you want to use.
Overall great device with excellent performance, definitely a good buy.

2 out of 5 eggsSo So Products

Pros: -Worked Out of the box
-Both Bandwidth SSIDs share same name.
- Can handle a lot of devices going at the same time

Cons: -The changeable settings are almost non existent compared to a ASUS RT-AC68U -- Pretty much locked out of it.
-Changing even the most smallest settings cause the router to reboot.

Other Thoughts: - I don't recommend this at this time. Maybe if i can install custom firmware on it and get more control over the router.

Manufacturer Response:

We thank you for the feedback as we take the input into great consideration and we want to apologize for the issues you are experiencing with the router. Based on what you have stated in your review, we believe that you should get in contact with one of our technicians so they may help you resolve the issues you are having with the router. They can be reached anytime by calling 1-877-453-5465 and our agents will be glad to assist you. We hope to restore your faith in D-Link.
