Tech Level: average - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Works perfect in linux, Ubuntu 8.04-9.04, Mandriva, Puppy Linux and more. Very easy to use no issue with dropping.
Cons: Non...Signal shows as less than 100% but it download as fast as my computers connected to the network by RJ45 cables. So, it's really no issue at all.
Other Thoughts: Watch the video, you'll see how easy it is to connect to Linux Mint for the first time. I'm booting from a USB pen non persistent. I have 3 of these SMC I use them for working on computer and I use one in the living room for my entertaiment computer. I can stream HD video just like my wired computer, no issues. I'm about 35 feet away from my Linksys WRT54GL and one wall in between. Sorry for the noise, the mic on the Casio Exilim EX-S500 camera is too sensitive. I assure you the system is not as loud in person. Hope this helps.

Linux Compatibility

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Supported by the linux driver zd1211rw which comes with the 2.6.24.24 kernel (and others). Inside the plastic housing is an Altheros AR2524-AQ1C Chip. Speedy connect time compared to other wireless dongles.
Cons: Unit is automatically installed by uDev( Linux) but if the USB connection is interrupted or unplugged, my dell e150 5 laptop suffers a hard lockup requiring a reboot. On a different PC, I don't experience this. For some reason, the unit does not report signal strength in dbm when requested to do so by Linux's WICD network manager. I'm looking for an newer kernel module. The dongle may show up as wireless interface wlan0 or wlan1 or wlan2 or wlanx. Do a "iwconfig" to determine which interface designation was applied to the dongle then enter this in WICD's preference->wireless interface box.

Pros: Was a good bargain when I bought it.
Cons: Went to junk after a while. Huge timeouts, packet loss. Absolutely useless now. Gets hot and stops working completely.
Other Thoughts: looks and feels cheap, You get what you pay for.
