Pros: None

Cons: USB 1 meaning it won't run higher than 1.5mb/s

1 out of 5 eggsDon't loose the driver

Pros: Small

Cons: No drivers available on website.

Other Thoughts: This is a portable device. We can assume people will loose the drivers.

1 out of 5 eggswarning---this is a usb 1.1 device

Pros: never opened the box.

Cons: the SMC website is wrong. the SMC 2209 is a USB 2.0 device. this particular device is USB 1.1, and thus limited to 12MB/s.

2 out of 5 eggsMisleading

Pros: Compact design. Nothing on it that could break like I saw on other USB adapters. Was able to make it work relatively easily in SmoothWall 3.0 (Linux based router/firewall)

Cons: Capped at 5 mbps! aka useless

Other Thoughts: Tried using this as the Red (external) side on my SmoothWall box with full gigabit on the Green side. When plugged directly into the modem, the laptop I had the Cox guy use to do the pro install would get between 18 and 20mpbs on bandwidth test sites. Plugged in through my SW, using this adapter, I couldn't get any of my computers to push past 4.5mpbs. I read around online to find that some USB adapters are indeed capped at 5mpbs. What the heck? Really, that's fine and all, but it should SAY somewhere in the documentation that it had that limitation. So, I ripped it out and used an old 10/100 PCI card that I had laying around (had to take out the PCI video card in the box) which worked without any fiddling around in SW and my speeds went right back to where they should be. So all in all this item is pretty useless in this day and age, with 10, 15, even 20 mbps internet connections becoming widely available.

5 out of 5 eggsout of the box...

Pros: Works out of the box with the Linux installed on the One Laptop Per Child XO - without additional drivers.

Cons: Needs (included) drivers for Windows XP - but who cares about Windows.

Other Thoughts: Handy for the OLPC XO which has only wifi built in, but does have USB ports.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with MCP61

Pros: Was automatically detected with PCLinuxOS 2007.
With a MCP61 I couldn't add a internal NIC,so this was my only option.
Also very easy to set up with a existing linux install, and noticed it does work even with a 2.6 kernel.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: For the price of this adapter, and the fact it works well with linux, buy one of these even if you don't need it right now.
Tomorrow the price may go up.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks ok in Linux, not at all in Vista

Pros: This device works with my CentOS 4.5 Linux without having to install a driver. I tested it with very large file transfers, and it did not have an overheating problem like other such devices. It comes with a convenient little 6" USB cable. It has indicator LEDs to show network activity.

Cons: It does not work with Windows Vista at all. The SMC web site does not have Vista drivers. I tried installing the Windows XP driver, but Vista refuses to accept it.

With Linux, I found that i cannot remove this device. Once you get it installed, you cannot remove it. If you reboot without the USB device, you had better let the Kudzu service remove it. Removing the device while running causes Linux to freeze. Booting without the device will freeze Linux before you get to the desktop. I have all the latest Linux updates. I read that the Mac had this freeze problem, but a USB driver patch fixed it.

Other Thoughts: When installing for Linux, I let Kudzu install the device with DHCP, and i rebooted twice. The NIC came up running, but did not show up in the network configuration, although it does show up with the "ip a" command. I already had a wired NIC at eth0, so this became eth1. To get it to show up like eth0 in the gnome configuration, i had to create and modify these files myself: /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth1, /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1, /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/ifcfg-eth1. Then all was well, and i used the gnome GUI to configure a static IP address.
