Intended for the home office, this dedicated print server allows you to hook up one USB 1.1/2.0 printer and operate at 10/100 Mbps on your network. It even allows you to print across the Internet! As the manufacturer points out, why put up with a fax when you can get the original?

Versatile, this server works with multiple operating systems and with multiple network protocols. Because it is dedicated to just one printer, it has a very small "footprint", always a plus in any office.

So, if you only have one printer and more than one computer, don't buy more printers, share the printer on your net and save money and space.

  • newegg USB 2.0 Port With the IOGEAR GPSU21's USB 2.0 port, share a USB multi-Functional printer with everyone on your network and enjoy fast data transfer speeds.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked As Expected

Pros: easy setup, just plugged in the usb from the printer, connected the network cable to my router, and plugged in the power supply. I checked for the IP of the print server to verify it was indeed recognized and given an IP and sure enough, it was there. The test page printed out. Also it's very easy to add to other computers in the house. This was tested on Windows 7 x64 and Windows XP x86. Looking to see if it works well with MAC OS.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: You need to make sure you have your driver for the printer handy on a Flash Drive. The server does not hold the driver on its system. If your OS does not already carry the driver, you need to install it on there before trying to print during the "Find a Networked Printer" process.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Set a static ip via web browser and set up the printers on all of my pc's without the use of IOGEAR software using all windows 7 OS's and an old hp laserjet 1320. Been solid so far

Supports duplex printing to save paper.
No need for IO gear software in each pc
4 computers installed in less then 15 mins total

Cons: Tried software first, did not find the print server. I had to use my router to find the ip address that got leased to it and set up from there. Lost an egg because of that.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice for the software to work properly and find the print server for me. If I was a novice user I probably would have returned it or at least had to deal with technical support.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with Brother Label Printer

Pros: Works as advertised

Cons: If you follow instructions, you can get it to work. But you should know what you're doing

Other Thoughts: Have it working fine with a Brother QL-500 label printer, although it's not shown in the compatible list. Install printer driver first, then the driver (downloaded it from the IOgear web site, didn't bother with the one included). Installed the driver and set a static IP address. Disabled appletalk, netware, etc. and it worked. Will have to wait and see on long term reliability. Used it to replace a Linksys combo switch/print server that got fried by lightning and they aren't available any more.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks, but some installation problems

Pros: Offers a cheap way of sharing a printer with all computers on the network. Works with 64-bit Win 7

Cons: Installed easily under 64-bit Win 7 using the iogear setup, but follow the instructions carefully, and read them thoroughly. (You first set it up printing to port LPT1.) Worked great until I had a power outage that reset my modem. When the print server came back up, DHCP gave it a different IP address, and it no longer worked (got a port not connected error). I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it using the iogear setup with no success. The printer showed the correct IP address for the port, and I could ping the print server, but I kept getting a port not connected error. Finally, I uninstalled the printer (make sure you clear any pending print jobs or you won't be able to uninstall the printer) setup the print server with a permanent IP address and installed the printer manually. See other thought for instructions.

Other Thoughts: Install manually as follows: 1) Use the iogear setup to setup the print server with a permanent IP address. 2) Open "Devices and Printers". 3) Select "add a printer" and "add a network printer". 4) Select "The printer that I want isn't listed". 5) Select "add a printer using a TCP/IP address" 6) Select TCP/IP for device type, enter the IP address you set in step 1 above, and enter a port name. Windows should find the port and tell you that "additional port information is required". 7) select "custom", and "settings..." 8) Set protocol to LPR, and enter a queue name. 9) Select your printer, and follow the remaining instructions. 10) Try printing a test page, it should work.

4 out of 5 eggsNice - after a bit of work

Pros: Gets the job done once configured.

Cons: As others have stated config utility does not work on Win64 (love the mfg response stating it runs on all versions of Windows - clueless).

Other Thoughts: One has to be a bit technical to get this baby working. Plug it in and consult your router for DHCP assigned IP address. From there it should be pretty obvious what to do if you know something about printing protocols. If not you might want to think twice about this device. Currently driving Brother HL-2140. Not listed as one of the compatible devices - no problems so far.

1 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 x64 Failures and Support Failures

Pros: It's small

Cons: The software that comes with this device is required to be installed and fails to run on Windows 7 x64. You run autorun.exe and it launches setup.exe when you choose Setup Wizard. The setup wizard fails to launch on multiple Win7x64 boxes.

Contacted phone support on the issue and the tech stated that the software ran on all versions of Windows, but kept stating that I needed to disable my AV software. I had already tried that prior to calling as well as tried in a fresh virtual machine with no third party software installed. The tech stated that I should email and someone would get back within 24 hours.

Sent a detailed support email stating exactly what troubleshooting I had already done. They responded with a link to download the software and to tell me to disable the Windows firewall. The software will still not install on Win7x64.

Tried to install on XP; the setup wizard did run, but failed to find the device. Reset the device to factory defaults, no dice.

Other Thoughts: tl;dr: This device requires you to install their bad software and it doesn't work on Win7x64. Support was standard level 1, without giving me the option to get someone more knowledgeable.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for your experience. The GPSU21 has been tested with Windows 7 64 bit versions and we did not have the problems you are describing. There are anti virus programs that will keep this software from loading correctly. The GPSU21 carries a 3 year warranty. Please email us with a phone number to contact you at support@iogear.com. We will be more than happy to contact you with quality service and process an RMA. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

1 out of 5 eggswont work

Pros: it sounded good on paper

Cons: well it just wont work on my hp laserjet p1006...
got it all hooked up...wizrd was easy, setup went smooth...

hit print and either printer runs for a second and stops or the printer led just blinks orange and it does nothing ;(

Other Thoughts: why is it so hard to find a print server that just works on all printers????? i mean its old technology, shouldnt be that complicated...honestly i had a linksys print server a while back that setup in seconds and always worked...wish i still had it

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for your experience. You can try resetting the print server back to factory defaults to see if that helps. This can be done by first disconnecting the network cable and any devices connected to the print server. Then hold in the reset button for ten seconds. While still holding the reset button unplug the power from the print server, continue holding the reset button for another ten seconds. While continuing to hold the rest button plug the power back into the print server and hold the reset button for another ten seconds. At this point you can now release the reset button and unplug the power from the print server again. Allow the print server to sit for another ten seconds, then plug the power back into the print server. The print server should now be set back to factory defaults. Also make sure you have the correct print driver installed for the operating system used before installation of the GPSU21. To better service you and understand your set up, please feel to contact our customer support at 1-866-946-4327 or email us: support@iogear.com. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy setup

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I have Windows 7, 64 bit and a Brothers HL-1440 printer not on comparability list, but it working fine.
Download the latest drivers from Iogear it will include the manual. Connect Printer Server to the Ethernet and printer if setup starts exit. Run the new drivers that you downloaded, and run setup, when you get to where it shows IP address such as 192.168.1.15 write it down then exit. Go to the manual and run setup on pages 32 to 38 on page 34 put in the IP address you wrote down then continue print a test page should work.

4 out of 5 eggsProblems with Windows 7 x64

Pros: Easy to setup; worked great with most PCs in my home. Versatile with XP, Vista, MAV and 7. Having trouble with W7 x64 though.

Cons: I have an HP Officejet 5500 multi-function printer hooked up to the GPU21 which is part of my home network. On the network, I have 2 XP PCs, one Vista PC, one Windows 7 x32 and a MacBook Pro. All of these machines can print to the printer via the GPU21 without a problem. They can all print from all applications such as OpenOffice, Internet Explorer, Adobe Acrobat Reader, etc.

However, I also have a Windows 7 x64 PC. This PC has the same printer installed and has a port setup in the identical manner to the other machines. I can ping the router without a problem and I can print from the Windows 7 x64 via the GPU21 BUT ONLY FROM CERTAIN APPLICATIONS -- such as Picture Viewer, for example. I can also print a test page. But if I try to print from OpenOffice or Adobe Acroat Reader I get some unusual behavior. The print job appears in the Print Queue, but disappears immediately and never prints out. There are no flashing lights on the printer or anything to indicate that the print

Manufacturer Response:

First, thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for your experience. I will forward this information to the product manager for his review. The GPSU21 is not compatible with Multifunction printers so this may be the reason you are having problems with certain documents. This can also be related to the fact that a multifunction devise requires bi-directional print. Try turning this off and see if you still have the same problem. You also need to make sure that the print driver used is fully compatible with Windows 7 64 bit. Again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

4 out of 5 eggsWhew its compatible!

Pros: Solved the problem of a 32-bit xp computer and a 64-bit vista computer that could not share a USB printer with each other due to 32-bit 64-bit driver problems.

Used with HP LaserJet p3015. This printer was not listed on the compatibility list, but I took a chance and it works flawlessly. taking the time to write this review so others know that this device works with the hp laserjet p3015.

Cons: Would like to see more printers listed on the compatibility list, so that its not a guessing game as to whether or not the device will work with your printer.

Other Thoughts: Their anime artwork and lame mission statements make this device less appealing as a business class solution to a problem. They should reconsider their packaging.

I spent 4 hours trying to solve the 32-bit 64-bit printing problem the "correct" way, but it was taking far too much time and this device was a convenient alternative with a moderate price. Saves time frustration and money.
