5 out of 5 eggsEasy & Reliable

Cons: cannot think of any

Other Thoughts: Amazing technology that once was quite difficult to achieve!

5 out of 5 eggsTrue plug and play for Ubuntu

Pros: After I installed Ubuntu 11.04 (using the wired ethernet on my motherboard to fetch the updates), I plugged this in and it worked, no questions asked. Since I used the motherboard ethernet during install, I can't comment on whether the liveCD will recognize it, but I bet that it would.

Cons: None. I knowingly bought this, a G adapter, to head off any wireless drama from Ubuntu. I could have rolled the dice with an N, but since I don't even have an N router I don't care.

Other Thoughts: Any Linux help forum is rife with posts about wireless adapters that don't work properly. If you're running Linux, save yourself the headache and just get this.

5 out of 5 eggsLinux hostapd support!

Pros: Works with the zd1211rw driver, and thus supports hostapd in Linux (nl80211) - in fact, this is currently the _only_ USB wireless adapter on Newegg that supports master (AP) mode under Linux.

Cons: Gets a little warm, but most of these things do.

Other Thoughts: AP/Master support for this adapter was just added in 2.6.39, so depending on how aggressively your distro backports things, you may need to compile and install a newer version of the compat-wireless modules. This isn't hard - just Google it.

It's hardware ID is 0ace:1215. The compatibility list on the linux-wireless website lists this model as 0ace:1211, so this must be a revision, but it works fine.

5 out of 5 eggsAnother happy Linux user

Pros: Works out of the box with Ubuntu 10.04 on a new Acer Aspire One netbook and with wattOS Linux on a truly ancient (ca 1999) Compaq Pressario laptop (cost $30 at a flea market). No need to download anything extra -- plugged it in and it worked.

Cons: Personal preference: the cable is a bit long and ungainly ... but other people might need the length.

Other Thoughts: It has been working just fine for several months, mostly for my teen aged daughter who is thrilled to get on Facebook from what really should be a doorstop!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with Linux!

Pros: I removed this from the box, plugged it into my Linux Mint 8 (Ubuntu-based) laptop and ZING! Instant connection. No need to download drivers. Working flawlessly and glad to finally have a wireless connection.

Cons: The light isn't all that bright. Minor detail.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: -Works in Linux (Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10) without needing additional drivers.
-Does what I need it to.
-Probably the best USB wifi adapter for under $30.

Cons: -Gets warm, but to be expected.
-Proprietary software that they provide is just BAD.

Other Thoughts: I'm surprised that this product isn't more popular. If all you're looking for is a USB stick to give you a wifi connection, this is the thing to get. No need for fancy stuff, this thing just works.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor build quality

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: It doesn't work very well. The reception of this adapter is really short (less than 30 ft.) Plus, the unit will over-heat within 15 minutes of booting the machine. This is even with light use. The adapter's drivers will also take over your machine unless you install them, copy the drives out to a different folder, uninstall the drivers and then manually install JUST the drivers and not the management application.

Other Thoughts: Overall this product is cheap which is good - but it is basically useless since it wont work for more than 10-15 minutes before it over heats and knocks all your other wireless adapters off the network.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Poor Quality

Comments: Bought one of these for the home office. Way too many problems. Firstly, the config utility conflicts with Windows' built in wireless utility, so they basically fight for control of the GWU523. (No, this is not due to some setting).
An install of the adapter without the IOgear util will allow windows to run it properly...at about 1-4mbps. Low/Poor reception quality being only 15 feet away from Linksys router with stright line of sight, no obstacles. I bought a proper wireless pci card and tossed this in the garbage...problem solved!
