1 out of 5 eggsLacks Features - Auto Logout Sucks

Pros: Generally Works

Cons: Lots of weird stuff happens. It constantly says "You have successfully logged out". Yes it totally sucks that it logs you out every five minutes and that wonderful auto feature for me overrides everything else. It's just totally annoying that you have to keep logging back in when you're working on something. The timeout s/b settable.

You cannot block a MAC if you allow guest access and that MAC comes in as a guest. Another problem is it defaults to no security on Guest Access. Even if you had security and a password it sets security to off if you turn guest access off and then back on. (It doesn't remember the setting). If you've got neighbors like mine it means you constantly end up with unauthorized users. The whole thing sucks.

QOS is weak at best and there is little control over guests so they can hog your bandwidth.

Other Thoughts: Get a more evolved router where the programmers maybe actually use it.

One of the LAN ports burned out shortly after I got it.

2 out of 5 eggsDied right after warranty

Pros: Worked great until it died. Decent interface and options.

Cons: Died almost exactly a year after purchase.

Other Thoughts: Almost feels like planned obsolescence. Thankfully I had a backup router.

1 out of 5 eggsWorking 10% of the time now

Pros: Was great while it worked. Originally bought in 2013.
I reviewed this originally 3/17/2014 4:41:08 PM and here is my follow-up

Cons: In the last week, it has taken a turn from bad (having to be reset weekly) to worse (having to be reset every couple of hours at times).

I've noticed the same hardware fault that other reviewers have claimed: The fan on the bottom never works, therefore, the device overheats.

Registering this device on WD's site was a bit of a pain. The device itself has a self-registration button (via the web gui) that never worked. When this device started showing consistent failures (each day), I decided to visit the WD portal to check the warranty. The warranty lookup page is buggy and has a cheerio that keeps spinning when it tries to insert your S/N into their database. I also had a difficult time submitting a support ticket via their portal (same cheerio hangup). I browsed the support forums and found i was not alone in that some others have post about the same behavior. I finally managed to register the product but it's been just over a year. WD's emailed response is that the device is out of warranty and they cannot replace it (even though I had their manufacturer response on newegg during the warranty period). Tough call, but business is business.

Other Thoughts: I am now having second thoughts about WD as a reputable brand.

1 out of 5 eggsDo NOT buy!

Pros: Great performance... When it works

Cons: Unit worked great up until a month after warranty. Constantly dropping signal. Online gaming is laggy and resetting it does not appear to fix any problems for long. Very disappointed with this router. I expect better quality from this price range of routers and WD. Seems to have all the same issues as other reviews.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk router, avoid.

Pros: Looks good, has 7 gigabit ports.

Cons: Everything is wrong with this router.
Freezes randomly after a day or a week.
Http interface dies after a day or a week.
Can see the AP but can't connect sometimes.
Can't see anything sometimes.

Other Thoughts: This is a worst router I've experienced, seconds worst being a Netgear G mode router 7 years ago.

Firmware update, downgrade, factory reset, disabling functions, device replacement, or any of the combinations mentioned doesn't help.

3 out of 5 eggsWorked well for the first 10 months

Pros: Nice features and high bandwidth. Lots of ports and separate wireless bands.

Cons: Fan on the bottom to dissipate heat is insufficient and causes unit to fail

Other Thoughts: Western Digital seems to have designed this to last the span of their warranty but no more. After 9 months of use, the fan went out and eventually caused the entire unit to fail. I will be in contact with Western Digital to try and get them to honor their one year warranty but less than thrilled to see WD making flimsy products. I used to buy WD because it meant quality, but this is seriously making me question how much I trust this brand.

3 out of 5 eggsDied 11 months after purchase.

Pros: Works well, easy to configure, simple intuitive configuration

Cons: Died after a short, but fruitful life.

Other Thoughts: The router ran well for about 11 months and then died. I came into my office one morning and my connection to the internet was down, the router was screaming hot and unresponsive. The fan on the bottom of the unit is not turning. The life-span was far too short. I would not buy this product again.

2 out of 5 eggsFirmware Issue

Pros: The QOS on it seems to be working as intended
Ultra fast wireless connection as advertised
The feeling of having 4 wireless networks :)

Cons: Where the wireless connection has always been great, I've seen performance drops in directly connected situations. After about 3 months I upgraded the firmware (as suggested by the router's software) ever since then the dhcp seems to stutter, and stop wanting to route entirely.

I tried factory resetting it, but it comes back up with the same version as before. As of right now it's stopped routing entirely.

Other Thoughts: I've requested an RMA from the seller twice, with no response. Very unprofessional.

If I receive an rma and the new one operates as intended I'll change from 2 to 5 eggs!

2 out of 5 eggsWorth the price?

Pros: It was really fast when I first got it. The wifi connection is really good.

Cons: It been less than a month and it keeps dropping my connections. I notice that there's also a fan on the bottom but never seen it spinning at least once.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear DJ, we want to extend our sincere apologies for the issue you have experienced. We always recommend ensuring that your router is up to date with the latest firmware, as this may easily resolve the issues you are experiencing. If you have already done so and are still experiencing these issues, in the interest of troubleshooting, you may want to reset the device back to factory default, as this will remove any residual configurations that may be causing conflicts within your network from an update that did not fully reset upon reboot of the unit.

If you feel at any time that our support team can be of further assistance in providing you with a positive resolution to your technical concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at (855) 842-5370, or via our support website at: http://support.wdc.com/contact/contact.asp?lang=en&ct=networking

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable router

Pros: 7 Gigabit ports, 2 USB ports, nice web configuration interface.

Cons: This router is simply unreliable as many other reviews have stated. At first the router would need to be power cycled once in a while, then every week, and eventually every day. I've tried rolling back the firmware from the latest version to every previous version. I performed a factory reset with every roll back to no avail. The fan on the bottom of the router has never turned on to my knowledge. In fact, I think there is something fundamentally wrong with either the thermal sensor or the coding in the firmware that dictates when the fan should activate. There are a ton of reviews and comments in the WD forums from users saying that the fan never turns on. I would have tried to send the router in for a warranty return, but I don't think it would have helped because I believe the router is unstable by design. This router will simply start to fail after a few months. This is the most unreliable router I have ever purchased.

Other Thoughts: Note any review giving this router five eggs. They probably haven't owned the router for more than a couple of months. If I had reviewed this router shortly after purchase I'd probably give it high marks as well. I purchased this at a retailer without reading reviews which is something I rarely do. I mainly purchased it because of the 7 gigabit ports. If you need 7 gigabit connections just buy a standard 4 port wireless router and a five port switch. The router and switch I ordered to replace this hunk of junk cost me $63 dollars. It's a single band wireless N router, but I don't need dual band in a 1000 sq ft apartment.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Andy,
It is unfortunate that you are experiencing problems with your Router. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty device due to these concerns, as we stand by our products and their associated warranties.
