5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Super easy setup, great connection for a 2 story house with no drops yet. Great for running system backups for more piece of mind.

Cons: my old 2.4 Ghz phone would interupt the signal when a call came in, but that's what you get for using a 12 year old phone lol...time to update the phone...

Other Thoughts: I would recomend this router to anyone without hesitation!

1 out of 5 eggsIf you like having your kids/wife pester you constantly because the 'wireless is broken.. again' than this is your device!

Pros: it had GB ethernet

Cons: WLAN drops, painfully slow transfer to the internal drive. N/A band coverage is not good

Other Thoughts: **I purchased this from N*wE*g 0 they had a better sale price**

I had such high hopes for this device.
I needed to upgrade from old D-Link wireless G device due to all the wireless devices in use in our home now.
I needed an external drive to store/backup pics/videos of the kids.
I wanted to upgrade my LAN to 1 Gbps
It fails miserably at 2 of 3 of them

Data transfer to the internal drive over a 1 Gbps connection is so slow the fresh paint on your wall will dry faster - not sure which is less fun to wait for though.I wanted a complete backup of ~450 GB of data - pics/videos - the transfer rate is ~1MB/s (ususally less) - not good. I tried letting it run all night - only to have it failed after 100 MB.I have now set it up as the destination for my Windows backup - that seems to work OK but I don't know how long it takes at night.

Wireless - like some others have said the range on the N-A band is not good. 1 wall and 12 feet and it struggles. I have adjusted the position of the router to help (rotated 45 degrees) - and it does help some - but the need for external antennas is apparent.

Lately the wireless has been dropped multiple times per day - both channels A/B and N/A at the same time. sometimes it will come back in a minute or 2, other times not at all and a reboot (pull the power cord out) is required. Occasional pulling the power cord has failed to resolve the issue, pushing the power button on the front did fix that one - but it also resets the admin name/password to the default.

Once all the networking failed - WLAN and LAN i had to remove power form the unit for 30 seconds to get it back.

That's a deal breaker - if the WLAN is not stable with 99% up-time it is a expansive doorstop.
that old D-Link that i bought refurbished for under $20 was 50x more stable - i just needed more bandwidth.

If you want to stream a movie in its entirety w/o interruption this is not for you.

If you like having your kids/wife pester you constantly because the 'wireless is broken.. again' than this is your device!

It is easy enough to RMA it - but w/o another device for a few weeks to a month is ridiculous. They can put a hold on you credit card for the ridiculous retail price and send you the replacement first - IDK if I trust that though - they cant get WLAN right...

Buying another manufactures device that works properly is going to be my solution + an external HDD or NAS

1 out of 5 eggsVery Bad

Pros: 1. price ( before new year was 69$)

Cons: 1. restarting randomly (all firmwares from 1.05.12), no reason, especialy when i try simple speedtest (at speedtest.net) doing download test, and on uploat test router crashing, try this out.
2. loosing wifi randomly
3. dlna sometimes works , sometimes not (error this file cannot be played .etc.)
and more..

Other Thoughts: Manufacturer, please do something, do a good firmware!!! router is useless!! The worst router i ever have, sorry but this is true

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsAwsome deal

Pros: Replased a netgear WNDR3700 that was being flakey for this one. Simalar specs. Slighly better signal strenth. Gigibit lan ports vs 10/100. Best of all comes with a built in 1tb HDD. The drive would have cost almost as much as I paid for this router!

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggsgood but slow data transfer to the internal drive

Pros: easy setup - after software install
storage built in
gigabit eathernet

Cons: you have to install the software to use it.
WLAN streaming to either 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz is very good
range is OK.
only has USB2

Other Thoughts: If they can address the slow data transfer rate to the internal drive this thing would be a good solution for a lot of folks.
As it is i set my backup to backup to the drive off hours so the transfer speed factor is minimal.
Add USB3 so we can expand the storage externally.

5 out of 5 eggsBest router I've ever had

Pros: All the normal options that routers have plus it has a nice gui. Nice start-up that anyone techy or not would understand. Upon ini it will set up and download speeds which really helped with my connection glitches. Hdd is really nice and windows actually sees it as a network storage and can read/write to it. I use it with the WD liveTV and it is a great combo - just keep video files smaller (<4gb) and FF/PAUSE/REW will work, anything larger takes too much transcoding so ff or pause do nothing, so if you're in the middle of a movie and it glitches it kinda sucks because you have to start at the beginning.

Other small dets:
- Cooling fan built in
- USB on back for printer or hdd (or fan in my case)
- Nice sleek design w/o blinding leds

Cons: Only major con not enough to loose an egg - Runs hot. I'm in FL so the closet it's stored in can get warm and the unit will start having general connection problems even with its built-in fan. I cool off the room and reboot to resolve. I wish it would stand upright.

Other Thoughts: I've used the USB plug as a power supply to a small fan and it has been running great, I plan on doing the same to the WDTV which runs real hot.

- After a few Linksys routers it seemed quality sunk, had 3 D-Link's, then their quality sunk, now I hope WD keeps up the great work.

1 out of 5 eggsWHAT A PIECE OF JUNK

Pros: Speed for the 5 minutes it worked

Cons: Where should I start......
Setup router all worked great I setup everything and all worked fine, changed settings etc. all still working fine.
Let it run and went upstairs to watch a movie using network and everything streamed fine. went to use my internet after movie and wireless and wired down.

ALL THIS WAS DONE WIRED NOT WIRELESS

Rebooted modem and router modem locks but router shows internet down and 0.0.0.0 wont dhcp modem.
Test modem direct to pc sure enough modem working fine
Test modem with my old router all working fine
Hook back up WD router and still all 0.0.0.0 router wont dhcp modem clikc renew like 10 times nothing.
Factory reset WD router.
Router working and modem DHCP and IP given. setup router settings again and rebooted. No internet again.
Factory reset WD router again.
Router working and modem DHCP and IP given. This time I left all settings default and rebooted router. No internet again.
Factory reset modem several times and tried different settings etc. After rebooted internet always down. After 10 or so factory resets and setups I gave up and disconnected and using my old router again.
I know my modem is fine and my PC as its working perfectly to do this review using my old router. with WD router connected after reboot I cant even login to modem again.

I thought I was getting a great deal for price since was cheaper to get with hdd than without. I have a 24 port switch with wired network so the extra 3 ports don't matter to me but all I got was a few hours of frustration. Calling newegg on Monday to return this router, I have never been so discussed with WD ever.

Western Digital should stick to making hard drives which they are great at making. Looked around internet and seems tons of people having same issue I experienced.

I updated to latest firmware before setting anything up, so I know isn't the router firmware.

Other Thoughts: Avoid, Avoid, Avoid

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Router

Pros: Good for the first day

Cons: Always dropping connection

Fans on it don't ever work which causes overheating problems

Have to reset it almost every few hours

5G connection is a terrible joke, you're better off connecting to 2.4G

Please do yourself a favor and don't buy this router, WD is a storage company, they should have never touched routers.

Other Thoughts: If for what ever reason you do buy this router, prop it up so the fan is exposed, this will help it not overheat. (it still will)

This router is a piece of trash and don't buy it.

2 out of 5 eggsGood Idea - Not So Good Product

Pros: I had high hopes for this Router/Storage device. It was easy to set up. Connected right up to all my devices both wireless and LAN. Drive was easy to map and wd2go set up went easy. UI was easy to use. I give it 2 stars for effort and ease of setup.

Cons: The set up is where this router's good points ended. Beginning with the first three or four hours after I opened the box the router began dropping random devices off of the network. First my android phone, then the iPad mini, then a computer on the LAN. Everything was dropped at the same time multiple times per day. A power down and restart was the only thing that allowed me to reconnect any device. The 5g had horrible range. I was barely getting a single bar one room and one wall away. About 12 feet from the router. The drive worked fine and I never got to the point of using it as a backup because of the router issues. Build quality was very poor. Plastic body and very light. It felt like it would crack if it was dropped from a height above 2 feet onto the carpet. Not very good for a high end, top of the line product.

Other Thoughts: This router/storage combo seemed like a good idea and I was very excited to purchase it especially as the Shell Shocker. I have owned countless WD drives without a single issue but this piece of equipment needs substantial work. I would avoid it until WD can fix the router issues. I RMA'd it and purchased an ASUS RT-N66U and have and ZERO issues with the router since I turned it on. No drops, fast speeds on both bands, easy to use, and great range. I'm happy to spend the extra money on storage to get a superb router. Maybe WD will figure out the issues in the future and I can say the same thing about their routers. The WD N900 central was a huge disappointment.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear mkb0717, we are sorry to hear about this abnormal experience. In a situation with these type of concerns, a firmware update may resolve the issue. Information regarding the procedures of how to update the firmware for your device can be located at the following link.

1 out of 5 eggsDeader than a very dead thing

Pros: Worked for 5 months

Cons: Worked for 5 months

Other Thoughts: Completely dead, not even a hard reset did anything. Upon performing a post mortem there appeared to be a very slight smell in the box. I'm wondering if the fan or something else burnt out. If you need to open the box be aware the screws are mounted under the feet and a fifth one under the label. I also needed to get into mine to get at the HD as I had some material on there I needed to get to.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the My Net N900 Central, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
