1 out of 5 eggsJunk. Bought on fire sale.

Pros: Nice looking / build quality, strong signals.

Cons: Intermittent lock up, AP not connectable (doesn't assign IP address to your device).

Other Thoughts: I bought this and also WD 900 HD Central router. Both are junk products that WD abandoned. No wonder why these went on fire sale.
As for this Range Extender, I use it as a AP for 5GHz. It's on "N only" mode, 20/40 MHz(Auto), and encryption is WPA2, static IP. After random hours to days, it just stops serving wifi. It can be seen but when you try to connect, it just doesn't assign any IP, and eventually the device that's trying to connect times out. So you are stuck with "Limited connectivity". Sure you can reboot this and will work for another X hours, but wow, these aren't even supposed to be like this. Routers or even simple APs are supposed to be maintenance free 24/7. My previous router didn't need a reboot over a year.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Hoon, please note that this is not the typical experience with the products you mentioned. In the interest of troubleshooting, you may want to reset the device back to factory default, as this will remove any residual configurations that may be causing conflicts within your network from an update that did not fully reset upon reboot of the unit. Please note, only the router (Master Browser) will assign IP addresses to connected devices. The AP (Access Point) mode is just an extension of your routers WIFI range.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little extender

Pros: Using 2 of these on 5GHz. band. One in the next room (about 15 feet away) and one on the floor below, about 40 feet away. I can stream 2 channels from my Silicon Dust HD Homerun to both simultaneously with absolutely no hiccups - smooth as silk.

Cons: No longer available. I guess I was lucky to get 2.

5 out of 5 eggsI found what I was looking for

Pros: From no bars to 4 bars is 5 stars for me. I've tried 3 other similar products with poor results. Where I had no internet I now have perfect signal strength. I highly recommend this to extend wireless coverage effortlessly. Easy setup with great performance.

Cons: none for me.

Other Thoughts: If you have any areas where coverage is weak, buy this!

2 out of 5 eggsdoes very little

Pros: 20 bucks on sale, has a built in giga port.

Cons: signal is weak, light indicator all light up when it next to the router move 3 feet away there down to two? make no sense, I use a tp dual band giga with 3 dual band 9dbi antennas and this hunk of junk cant even extend a signal a room away. The UI is cra.p, and every time i try to put it into ap mode it cuts off and I have to factory reset it to get back into the web UI. sucks as a extender, even more as a access point. re uploaded the firmware to see if that would help but it didnt, resets seem to not improve anything either.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these to continue my home network, what a serious mistake. I will stick with networking hubs and power lines. This device is a joke with cheaply made firmware and cra.p web interface. No wonder it was on sale.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer, we apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced while using the Range Extender.
Please try assigning a Static IP to the device through the Dashboard, to ensure that automatic IP assignment provided by your router is not causing the issue on your LAN. You will want to navigate to the following IP address in your browser: 192.168.1.230.
Depending on the proximity to your Base Station/AP, the signal to the device may not be optimal. Please try relocating the device closer to the source signal to see if connectivity improves.
Verify that your network is configured for the wireless "N" standard only, and using WPA2/AES encryption as well, as this can greatly improve overall wireless performance and issues locally.
Please refer to the User Manual on page 30 for reference.
If using the Extender in AP Mode, you may want to connect the device with Ethernet directly to your system to configure it accordingly, and then directly to the router for the continuation of the setup, prior to deploying it as an AP elsewhere on your LAN.
Should you require any assistance with your device, please mention this review and reach out to us at 1 (855) 842-5370, or via our support website at http://support.wdc.com/contact/contact.asp?lang=en&ct=networking

1 out of 5 eggsLocks up constantly

Pros: Setup is rather easy (even without WPS)
Menu's are straightforward and few

Cons: Locks up randomly, usually within a few days or even hours
Updates and support for the product seem non-existant

Other Thoughts: There is a reason for the current fire-sale on this item. The device is just problematic and I suppose most places are dumping it. I cannot find any discussion about these issues on the WD support site, but I have seen comments elsewhere about it. I'll file a support request and see how far that gets me but, without new firmware, I'm not hopeful.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy this item

Pros: None

Cons: Not work with WPA, AES etc at all. No matter you update the firmware or setup in any way, still not working at all.

Other Thoughts: Buy WD hard drives but not this junk...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer, please note that the My Net Wi-fi Range Extender supports WEP/WPA/WPA2 encryption styles. If you are unable to connect to wireless signal using these encryptions, you may try pressing the reset button on the side of the My Net, as well as ensuring that the correct band (2.4 GHz/5 GHz is selected. Please follow the link below for the steps.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Nice packaging...

Cons: Never worked right from day one. Was intermittent in connecting to device. Tried using wireless and hard wired, neither worked. Eventually stopped connecting to anything. Western Digital Tech Support suggested I do a firmware upgrade despite not being able to connect to the internet. Thanks for the wonderful "third world" tech support (Dominican Republic).

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Doug M, we are sorry to hear that you experienced problems with your My Net Wi-fi Range Extender. For the initial setup, should wireless be problematic, you can connect the Extender directly to the Computer with the provided Ethernet cable, and visit the default IP address or URL of the Extender. Ensure that your NIC is setup for DHCP.
http://192.168.1.230
http://wdrangeextender
Once in the Dashboard, you can configure the Extender with your Wireless Network by scanning for broadcasting networks, or manually entering the SSID. As a troubleshooting step, please move the extender to an outlet that is closer to the area for which you want to increase wireless coverage. We suggest approximately half-way between router and the client. In 30-60 seconds, the extender should connect. Verify the strength of the signal by checking the signal strength LEDs; if only one of the signal strength LEDs are lit, you may experience an intermittent connection.
Please note that it is possible to update the firmware by manually downloading it from the Western Digital support page prior to connecting with the Ethernet cable, and then you may load the file manually from the download. For more information please follow the link below.

2 out of 5 eggsinternet connection drop frequently though speed and signal increase

Pros: strong signal strength, enhanced speed

Cons: internet connection drop at least once /day, i have to power off and power on the extender to recover the internet connection. it is annoying.

Other Thoughts: the device is in wi-fi extender mode and i cannot assign the static IP to the extender. The firmware is the latest. though the speed and signal increase, I am thinking about returning it since drop of connection bring a lot of trouble.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer, if you have already updated the firmware to the latest version (1.02.01) and are still experiencing these issues, in the interest of troubleshooting, you may want to reset the device back to factory default, as this will remove any residual configurations that may be causing conflicts within your network from an update that did not fully reset upon reboot of the unit. For more information please follow the steps from page 25 of the user manual.
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-705081.pdf#page=27
It is advisable to try setting a Static IP for the WD Extender to statically bind your device to the network and ensure that DHCP is not the culprit in your specific situation. This can be done from within the User Interface Settings.

2 out of 5 eggsEasy setup has some issues.

Pros: Easy set up, plugged in turned on, started working right away. Greatly increased our wireless coverage.

Cons: Internet connectivity dropped often and trouble connecting multiple devices.

Other Thoughts: This range extender works very well most of the time. I returned unit because I have to reset it three to four times a day because it loses internet connectivity but not local network. My router and modem still work properly so I believe issue is with extender. A second issue is with connecting devices. We have three devices and sometimes devices will not connect due to IP conflict. I have updated firmware but this did not correct issues.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the Western Digital My Net Extender, as this is not the intended experience with the product. Should you experience connectivity issues or dropouts, the Extender may need to be assigned a Static IP address via the User Interface and/or through your Router. You may utilize the LEDs on the side of the unit to ensure you have the Extender located at the best possible location for a good signal from your initial Wireless Access Point. Please ensure you have the latest firmware for your device, as firmware updates add feature enhancements and compatibility. You can read more at the following link.

3 out of 5 eggsSeemed like a dream, and that's all it was

Pros: Small form factor, not flashy - thus easy to hide w/ the home theater and not stick out.

Wall mountable (no hardware needed - just need two screws in the wall) or use integrated stand, so nice versatility.

Supposed 5ghz or 2.4ghz networking.

Ethernet port (gigabit)

Supposed WPS functionality.

Very nice heat dissipation...I was very surprised at how well this device sheds heat, I own and/or have installed hundreds of pieces of networking hardware & this is by far the best at shedding heat.

Overall this seems like it should be a solid product...it just doesnt really ever deliver.

Cons: I would have given this a 2.5 egg review, so I rounded up. From the pros listed you wouldnt expect a 3 egg review though so let me explain.

A bit of my needs, desires, and issues...

I live in a 2 story home, I currently utilize two routers. Both netgear - one DGND4000 and the R6300. I utilize one for my office network (routes to an 8 port switch) and a dual-band concurrent primary network for my media on my second floor (where my routers are) with the 5ghz band primarily used upstairs and 2.4 on the first floor due to poor 5ghz reception downstairs (i can pick up a signal w/ my +5db boost antennas but its still better on 2.4ghz) and a single 2.4ghz guest network. My problem has always been getting the best signal in the 1st floor & basement. My Home Theater is located in the basement and 60 feet from my routers. As stated I get a signal but it's not the best. I don't want to run wired because that's for my office network and I dont want my consoles, media players, & HTPC to connect to it. So i'm stuck on wifi.

I was hoping that this extender would allow me to pipe 5ghz downstairs to the basement & allow me to run ethernet to a switch & line in my consoles & HTPC. Well that didnt pan out, the 5ghz signal wouldnt even connect. I'm assuming that is due to the nature of 5ghz and the amount of obstruction between the router & the extender, I cant expect an internal antenna array to pick up a better signal than 3 x +5db antennas can. However, when I moved the extender directly upstairs (same floor as router & 60 feet away) it still didnt pick up a signal. So it was worthless for me on the 5ghz network.

On 2.4ghz I could connect, but it never gave me as good a signal as the HTPC does & as such I was left using on board wifi for my consoles & media players. The best use I could come up with was to run 2.4ghz on the same floor as the router directly over my Home Theater. This gave me increased signal strength on my PS3, Wii, Roku HD, NTV200S, and no change in signal to the HTPC. Not what I would call worth the investment.

Other Cons...

Painfully slow setup, I dont know if it was caused by my failed attempts to use WPS when the 5ghz was out of range, but I could not get WPS to work with the two WPS devices I have (validated it worked w/ a USB nic, so it's not the router), but the connection took 180 seconds.

The ethernet connection didnt make any significant changes on my HTPC, I got the same data transfer speeds on my HTPC w/ 2.4ghz wireless as I did with this extender connected and then outputting ethernet to the HTPC.

I was unable to register an account w/ WD - for some reason I had the place to login, but there was no capability for me to create a new user.

When the extender was connected to my HTPC via ethernet, I was able to validate the connection, but the PC didnt report the extender in the connected devices section no matter what I did.

A couple times I lost connection & was unable to reconnect w/ou

Other Thoughts: Maybe it just doesnt live up to what I was hoping to get from this device.

Did it improve a portion of my wifi network? Yes. And that's it's primary function, extend your networking area. So it is successful in that. It just didnt do anything I wanted it to do.

Overall I got my hopes up with this device & was extremely let down. Hopefully you can take what you need from my situation & find it works for you!

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the Western Digital My Net Extender, as this is not the intended experience with the product. The Extender's capabilities and performance are based on the signal it receives from your primary router/Access Point. It is intended to extend the wireless signal beyond the varying range of your initial wireless signal, thus providing further coverage outside this range. Should you experience performance or connectivity issues, it is advisable to move the Extender closer to the router/Access Point to get the best results. The LEDs on the side of the unit will assist in facilitating the best possible connection/location by indicating the signal strength from your primary Access Point to the unit. Although running an Ethernet cable directly from your router to the desired and point for your devices may not be desirable or feasible, by placing the Extender between the two locations, this would allow a much shorter cable to be run.
Is there anything we can do to assist you at this time? We would appreciate the opportunity to further assist you personally, and resolve any further concerns you may have with the device and/or your experience directly. You may contact us at 1 (855) 842-5370, or via our support website at:
